The HIDDEN GEM scenic ride from Turčianske Teplice to Banská Bystrica in Slovakia
A quick ride through the Fatras in Slovakia on a snowy winter's morning. This journey really is one of those hidden gem trips that cuts its way through steeply-sided valleys to finally bring you down to Banská Bystrica.
I'd heard about this on a UK newspaper's travel section, where they were detailing the less travelled scenic routes of Europe. I had time before my train to Bratislava to make the trip there and back and I was so pleased I did!

In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view on the Zvolen – Vrútky Railway line operated by Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko, a. s. (ZSSK) from Banská Bystrica to Vrútky in 4K/60 frames per second.
The railway line Zvolen - Vrútky (marked as railway line number 170) is a railway line in Slovakia, connecting Zvolen, Banská Bystrica, Martin, and Vrútky. Originally the line ran through Kremnica, but after a section through Harmanec was constructed, its routing was changed through Banská Bystrica.
The original line Zvolen - Vrútky was a part of the Hungarian Northern Railway Budapest - Salgótarján - Lučenec - Zvolen - Vrútky (connection with the Košice-Bohumín railway), which was put into operation on 12 August 1872. Considerations of connecting Zvolen with the Košice-Bohumín railway via Ružomberok or Harmanec were not realized due to the high costs. In the end, the variant leading through Kremnica was chosen.
In 1931 the railway line Handlová - Horná Štubňa was put into operation, connecting the regions of Ponitria and Turiec, and in 1936 the line Červená Skala - Margecany, which connected to the line Žilina - Košice. After the completion of these sections in 1936, the construction of the last section Banská Bystrica - Dolná Štubňa began, which was to connect the already existing lines.
The missing section between Banská Bystrica and Dolná Štubňa was to be 40,956 km long and to overcome the height difference of 373.78 m from the Bystrica side and 125.62 m from the Turčianska side. The number of tunnels and the length changed during construction due to difficult geological conditions. The line's highest point reached an altitude of 692.94 m above sea level.
The demanding mountain line at the junction of Veľká Fatra and Kremnické hory uses 22 tunnels totalling 12,211 meters, 112 bridges, and culverts. As many as 12,339 workers worked on the construction (May 1938) and it was inaugurated on 19 December 1940.
The longest tunnel of the line is tunnel No. 14 - Čremošniansky (also called Harmanecký), which is also the longest railway tunnel of the ZSSK. It took only 23 months to break through and the deviation during construction was 28 mm in the directional profile, 5 mm in height, and 35 mm in length.

Starým Passatom ´98 | Späť na Slovensko z Baltiku | HEL (PL) - Vrútky | Skoro sme nedošli! | Day 5
Posledné ráno nás víta so slnkom v náručí, krásna pohoda v campe, kľud a pokoj, idylka, ako má byť. Až kým...
Až kým neotočíme kľúčom a .. nič, nič sa nedeje! Pohoda, dalo sa to čakať, keďže sme si nabíjali mobily 4 dni a nepreštartovail sme auto. Za normálnych okolností by to nebola žiadna záťaž, ale keďže batéria už mala tie najlepšie časy za sebou, dopadlo to inak.
Žiadna panika. Oslovili sme suseda Poliaka a po pár momentoch už prepájame káble a razom motor vrčí. Potrebujeme však aspoň zopár hodín vkuse ísť a nevypínať motor. Prejdeme teda polostrov Hel, mesto Gdynia, Sopot a Gdansk, kde sa stavíme na pumpe, aby sme dotankovali.
Avšak problémy na seba nenechajú dlho čakať a keďže sme vypli motor, napätie, aby sa opäť naštartoval sa dalo krájať a - jasné, že sme nenaštartovali. Tentokrát to ale bolo komplikovanejšie a po chvíli oslovovania okoloidúcich sa konečne našiel dobrovoľník, ktorý sa rozhodol nám pomôcť. Štartovanie však bolo komplikovanejšie a keď už sme po cca pol hodine strácali nádej, konečne to naštartovalo! Padol nám balvan zo srdca a vybrali sme sa konečne ďalej - napojíme sa na diaľnicu sever - juh (A1).
Celá cesta z Hel-u do Vrútok nám trvala cca 11 hodín. Z toho asi 6 trvala cesta naprieč celým Poľskom po diaľnici zo severu až k českým hraniciam. Zvyšných 5 sme sa trmácali okresnými cestami (Hel - Gdansk) a (PL-CZ hranica - Vrútky). Čiže cesta cez celé Poľsko vôbec nieje tak dlhá, ako by sa na prvý pohľad mohlo zdať. Problémom sú okresné cesty.
Samozrejme v Katowiciach nás premôže hlad a tak sa rozhodneme pozrieť, čo nové v KFC a tentoraz bez vypínania motora. Ideme na to a tlačíme do hlavy. Keď však skontrolujeme motor, zistíme, že nám pre zmenu vytiekla chladiaca kvapalina. Neostáva nám nič iné, ako vypnúť motor, počkať a doplniť destilovanú vodu. A ako zvyčajne, nejde nám naštartovať. Tretí ochotný Poliak nám s tým pomôže a ideme ďalej.
Už sa nikde nezastavujeme a ideme cez hranice do ČR (Český Tešín) a Slovensko (Čadca). Výjdeme nad mesto vychutnať si posledný západ slnka a po krásných 5 dňoch sa presúvame domov. Krásne dobrodružstvo a dúfame, že ďalšie nás ešte čakajú. A veruže čakajú, najbližšie sa ocitneme v Taliansku - v Dolomitoch a aj pri mori, Slovnisku - Julské alpy a tak, nechajte sa prekvapiť :)
