📍Mill Creek Park in Youngstown, OH
Mill Creek Park is one of the most underrated metro parks in not only Ohio, but the United States as well. It has a multitude of hiking trails, picturesque waterfalls, and what feels like a thousand unique bridges scattered throughout the park. If you look back at my previous shorts, you can see the Cinderella bridge that literally looks straight out of a Disney Movie!

The Wandering Firefighter and family camped at the Upper Iowa Resort and went canoeing on the Upper Iowa River. Decorah, Iowa is a beautiful part of Iowa, filled with bluffs, hiking trails, waterfalls, and an awesome river. There are some of the best hiking trails in Iowa as well as some of the best camping in Iowa. Paddling in Iowa is an experience the whole family will enjoy and a great way to explore Iowa and see the great Iowa outdoors. Canoeing in Iowa has never been so amazing. You can also try some Upper Iowa River kayaking. #upperiowariver
While you're in Decorah, visit Dunning Springs Park and Malanaphy Springs to check out some beautiful waterfalls in Iowa. It is some Iowa tourism at its finest! And don't forget to enter the Ice Cave in Decorah--especially on a hot summer day! Then stop at Mabe's Pizza for dinner and The Whippy Dip for dessert!
Canoeing down a river is a great thing to do in Iowa and the Iowa hiking spots in the area can't be beat. Decorah is a great day trip from Des Moines or a great weekend trip from Des Moines. The Upper Iowa river has some great fishing, and the Upper Iowa Resort is a great place to call home for awhile. Check 'em out! Links to the Upper Iowa Resort's website and Facebook page are below!

Volga River State Recreation Area 🦋 🦋 🦋
Pretty park near Fayette in NE Iowa. There isn't a beach and the campground lacks abundant shade but other than that this checks a lot of boxes. Numerous trails traverse the park and it looks like a popular spot for equestrian use (there's a separate equestrian campground that was getting use). The lake has ADA accessible jetties and fishing pier and we saw several people fishing from them while we visited, as well as boaters and kayakers using the lake.

Discovering Decorah Iowa Part 1 (Dunning Spring, Ice Cave, and Toppling Goliath Brewery).
In this episode of Country Pilgrim, we take you to Decorah Iowa, and explore a 200-foot waterfall, ice cave and take a nice relaxing break at one of the top micro-breweries in the Mid-West - Toppling Goliath Brewery.
One of the things that might be missed when traveling to Iowa is exploring and adventuring to the four corners of the state, where some of the best beauty hides in and around hillside country and flowing rivers with lush green woodlands. Decorah - Iowa is a beautiful place and sits just on the edge of Iowa's North-East border along Iowa and Wisconsin.
Backbone Rock Worlds Shortest Tunnel
This is a short hike outside the city of Damascus, VA in a small community called Shady Valley, TN.
This tunnel is dubbed the shortest tunnel in the world it was originally built for the railroad to pass underneath.
Trail #53 From the parking lot go up some steps to the top and follow the trail over the road and over the top of the tunnel. But be careful it's dangerous and can be slick up there if wet.
After we crossed over the top of the tunnel we took another trail over to Backbone Rock waterfall which makes a small nice leisure loop hike.

Backbone State Park 🦋 🦋 🦋 🦋 🦋 - AMAZING!
Dedicated in 1920, this beautiful state park was Iowa's first. Here you can find the highest point in NE Iowa - a narrow ridge of bedrock known as The Devil's Backbone. We hiked the rocky trail that runs along it. In addition to 20+ miles of trails, the park boasts some of Iowa's best trout streams. Or just spend a lazy afternoon boating or kayaking on the lake. Those more adventurous than we are can also rock climb the dolomite limestone cliffs (register at the park office first). The campground is shaded and pretty. There are a number of modern cabins for rent as well, though it appears they do book out several months in advance online. Mrs. Meandering would LOVE to rent one in October when the leaves turn!

Why Virginia's Highways Suck
Driving in Virginia is always a traffic nightmare. Here in the Old Dominion, we have tiny highways compared to other metro areas and even rural areas. Having only 2 lanes to Richmond is just terrible. Granted, 30 or 40 years ago is was okay but Virginia has failed to keep up with needs. Our Governor has decided that cutting taxes is far more important than building roads. The only roads they do suggest are toll roads. In fact our Governor has SOLD the tunnels between Portsmouth and Norfolk to a private, foreign company and promised them a 13.5% profit every year for the next 50 years AND given them the right to increase tolls every year. Perhaps the best part is that seeing as how the Downtown Tunnel is part of I-264, travelers from outside our area without EZPass will be issued a penalty for each trip as the are NO toll booths. Imagine an Interstate highway that does not give you even the option to pay a toll. Time for these tax cutting idiots to go and get back to business.
Great Bear Springs Recreation Area - Fall Leaf Hike - Fulton, New York
The area known as Great Bear Springs is comprised of 236 acres owned by the City of Fulton, the 110 acre Town of Volney Park and 130 acres of CNY Landtrust land. Great Bear Springs has been a source of spring water for over 200 years and became the primary source of water for the City of Fulton in 1970.
This is an area I really love to go hiking in with many trail options ranging from short mile long hikes to full 10k trails created for an Eagle Scout project.

In June of 2021, Kay got the opportunity to explore outdoor activities in and near Fort Dodge, Iowa. One of the activities Kay got to do is kayaking on the Des Moines River Water Trail from Dolliver State Park to the town of Lehigh. Dolliver Memorial State Park in northwest Iowa is unique for its natural bluffs and geological formations. Dolliver overlooks the Des Moines River Valley and spreads across 594 acres of flatlands and rugged trails. It is a beautiful state park with lots of history.
The Des Moines River Water Trail is known as a meandered river. That means that the the river and its banks (up to the high water line). It is always good to looks for wildlife while you paddle. There is always a chance to see otters, turtles, eagles, turkey vultures, and song birds.
