Sarajevo Travel Guide - Bosnia and Herzegovina Fascinating Experience

Sarajevo Travel Guide - Bosnia and Herzegovina Fascinating Experience

Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is nestled in a valley, mainly within the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but with parts in the Republika Srpska entity. Sarajevo is one of the most historically interesting and varied cities in Europe. It is a place where the Western & Eastern Roman Empire split; where the people of the Roman Catholic west, Eastern Orthodox east and the Ottoman south, met, lived and warred. It has been both an example of historical turbulence and the clash of civilizations, as well as a beacon of hope for peace and tolerance through multi-cultural integration. Sarajevo is not a huge city - 395,133 people live in its urban area, but it is very livable, vibrant and busy. The city is historically famous for its traditional religious diversity, with adherents of Islam, Orthodoxy, Catholicism and Judaism coexisting there for centuries.

Sarajevo is a cosmopolitan European capital with a unique Eastern twist that is a delight to visit. The people are very friendly, be they Bosniaks, Croats, or Serb. There is very little crime, and the city ranks as one of the safest in South Eastern Europe. The town is very tourist friendly, especially in the city center.

Four distinct seasons with warm or hot summers and cold winters. Sarajevo is basically on the mountain so winters can be slightly colder here than in other capital cities in the region. You should not be surprised if you see some snow in mid October, but also sometimes in May, although it rarely occurs and stays on the ground for a very short period. Autumn can be cool, but during that period Sarajevo is very foggy and gray with little bit of sunshine.

Sarajevo is close to the center of the triangular shape of Bosnia and Herzegovina in southeastern Europe. Sarajevo city proper consists of four municipalities (or in Bosnian and Croatian: općina, in Serbian: opština): Centar (Center), Novi Grad (New City), Novo Sarajevo (New Sarajevo), and Stari Grad (Old City), while Metropolitan area of Sarajevo (Greater Sarajevo area) includes these and the neighbouring municipalities of Ilidža, Hadžići, Vogošća and Ilijaš.

Sports-related tourism uses the legacy facilities of the 1984 Winter Olympics, especially the skiing facilities on the nearby mountains of Bjelašnica, Igman, Jahorina, Trebević, and Treskavica. Sarajevo's 600 years of history, influenced by both Western and Eastern empires, makes it a tourist attraction with splendid variations. Sarajevo has hosted travellers for centuries, because it was an important trading center during the Ottoman and Austria-Hungarian empires and because was a natural stop for many routes between East and West. Examples of popular destinations in Sarajevo include the Vrelo Bosne park, the Sarajevo cathedral, and the Gazi Husrev-beg's Mosque. Tourism in Sarajevo is chiefly focused on historical, religious, cultural sites and winter sports.

Sarajevo is host to many parks throughout the city and on the outskirts of city. A popular activity among Sarajevo citizens is street chess, usually played at Trg oslobođenja Alija Izetbegović. Veliki Park is the largest green area in the center of Sarajevo. It's nestled between Titova, Koševo, Džidžikovac, Tina Ujevića and Trampina Streets and in the lower part there is a monument dedicated to the Children of Sarajevo. Hastahana is a popular place to relax in the Austro-Hungarian neighborhood of Marijin Dvor. Goat's Bridge, locally known as Kozija Ćuprija, in the Miljacka Canyon is also a popular park destination along the Dariva walkway and river Miljacka. On December 24 of 2012, a park hosting two brass sculptures resembling two mourning mothers was dedicated as the Friendship Park, commemorating over 45 years of friendship between Sarajevo and Baku.

Sarajevo is also famous for its city lookouts; including an observation deck on Avaz Twist Tower, Park Prinčeva restaurant, Vidikovac lookout (Mt. Trebević), Zmajevac lookout and Yellow/White fortresses lookouts (in Vratnik) as well as numerous other rooftops throughout the city (i.e. Alta Shopping Center, BBI Center, Hotel Hecco Deluxe).

Herzegovina Wine Route

It is very difficult to give an exact answer about the origin of the name Žilavka, but it can be logically assumed that its name symbolizes fine veins, visible in the period of the full maturity of grapes in the berry, through its thick but transparent skin. Its attribute, „hercegovačka“ seems to want to express its unique grandeur, delicacy, boon , and abundance, as if to redeem the concern and effort of the wine growers. It also symbolizes the region of Herzegovina, where it grew, formed its characteristics, assimilated and identified with the sunny and karst ambience of Herzegovina.

doprinijeli ekonomskom razvoju općine i stvorili nova radna mjesta. Već do sad je privukla pažnju i
interesovanje mnogih investitora zbog svoje izvanredne lokacije i povoljnih poslovnih uslova.

At Mejdan Park in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina | Ruins of BakrBaba's Mosque Historical Place

#shorts#travel

At Mejdan is a park that is located on the left bank of the Miljacka River, between the bridges, Latinska Ćuprija and Ćumurija. This green space is located in the heart of old Sarajevo and the area, which takes up about 2,500 m2, has changed its name and function many times over the years.

Right after the founding of Sarajevo, this was where public punishments were carried out, and for this reason, it was called Sijaset Mejdan. In the second half of the 15th century it served as a horse track and a place for trading horses and up to that time it was called At Mejdan (at = horse; mejdan = square). A Must visit place in Sarajevo

International City Tour: Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina Explained

It’s never fair to compare one city to another. Some have things that make it unique that may not be for everyone. Cities are full of many of these nuances but to my pleasant surprise, one made me feel like I was back home in ways I didn’t expect. In today’s video, I want to tell you about the incredible city of Sarajevo located in Bosnia & Herzegovina and why it had quite literally everything I could ask for, plus more.

Representing the capital city of Bosnia & Herzegovina, Sarajevo is a melting pot of different religions and cultures and at every step, it’s as clear as day to see. You may find yourself walking and be greeted with a family heading for prayer at the Gaza Husrev-beg Mosque, the countries largest for the ever expanding Islamic community here. Walk a little further, and you’ll see people enjoying some traditional Bosnian Food in the form of Bureks and other forms of stuffed pie meals. There’s also a reality of a not so distant past where peace was seldomly found via shelling marks on older buildings from the Bosnian war in the mid 1990’s. However, walking around today, you’ll see a city for all that it’s been through, thriving with people visiting from all over the world, but surprisingly - still unknown to many.

But for the people looking to stay here for an upcoming trip, accommodation was rarely expensive and nightly stays ranged from $15 dollars and up per night. It was common to book through popular apps such as Booking.com, but then work out a deal in a pinch for an additional few days off platform to be paid by cash. So those looking to save additional money may be wise to keep this in mind.

One of the things I loved so much about Sarajevo was just the variety of things to do. If you’re in the mood to try different types of food, there were always many options to choose from. If you wanted to take advantage of the walkability and nature here, hikes were also a fun way to get outside the city center. Shopping is not something I speak to often but if you’re interested in clothes, books or anything between, it was always within walking distance, given that you’re near the city center/old town square region of Sarajevo. Walking tours are generally a go too for me and thankfully, there were plenty to choose from as well. Depending who your guide is, with so much history taking place here, and not always of the positive kind, it was fascinating to hear the perspectives of locals that may have lived through some of these events in some capacity, but chose to remain positive of what’s ahead versus dwell on the past. Needless to say, if you’re looking for ways to stay busy here, you’ll rarely have trouble finding things to do.

If one is looking for ways to get around, I was also impressed with the options available. You have the stables of cars, taxis and bicycles, but it was also common to see people commute via scooters, trains and my favorite mode of transportation, walking. This isn’t always a given depending where you are in the world, but the infrastructure of clean sidewalks, traffic and walk lights and well lit streets made this my preferred way to explore, and it may be yours as well.

Being this is a capital city, credit cards were generally accepted at most locations but cash in the form of the Bosnian Mark will likely be the easiest form of payment used during your visit.

Touching on this earlier, but diversity was another factor that surprised me so much. Not for any reason isolated to Sarajevo, but the diversity of people whether it was religion, ethnicity or age, mixed with just how everyone was able to coexist to effortlessly, was what reminded me of my hometown of Queens in New York City.

Also like NYC, I was impressed time and time again of all the food options available. Not only was the food delicious, but the costs of food were very accessible to people of all budgets. A dish of food could be as low as $2-$3 dollars, but this never meant the quality was questionable. Cafes and bakeries were also always available too which for anyone with a slight caffeine addiction like myself, this was more than appreciated.

When it came to safety, although I never felt uneasy walking around, it’s still best to keep belongings close by and to be aware of your surroundings. Most friendly face were just that, but it’s still always good to be cautious wherever you are, just in case intentions aren’t as clear.

This was a challenging video to put together as I had to digest my love for Sarajevo in just a few minutes but could’ve easily kept going. The grittiness on the surface of this city could potentially put people off. Considering what Sarajevo had to grow from, it’s amazing to see what it’s become. This is a city that even months removed from visiting, I keep in my thoughts as not only one of my favorite places I’ve ever visited, but a city I could wholeheartedly call home one day. I loved my time in Sarajevo, and I hope this video showed why.

MAP OF SARAJEVO

Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a population of 275,524 in its administrative limits. The Sarajevo metropolitan area including Sarajevo Canton, East Sarajevo and nearby municipalities is home to 555,210 inhabitants. Located within the greater Sarajevo valley of Bosnia, it is surrounded by the Dinaric Alps and situated along the Miljacka River in the heart of the Balkans, a region of Southern Europe.

Sarajevo is the political, financial, social and cultural center of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a prominent center of culture in the Balkans. It exerts region-wide influence in entertainment, media, fashion and the arts. Due to its long history of religious and cultural diversity, Sarajevo is sometimes called the Jerusalem of Europe or Jerusalem of the Balkans. It is one of a few major European cities to have a mosque, Catholic church, Eastern Orthodox church, and synagogue within the same neighborhood.

Although there is evidence of human settlement in the area since prehistoric times, the modern city arose in the 15th century as an Ottoman stronghold, when the latter empire extended into Europe. Sarajevo has gained international renown several times throughout its history. In 1885, it was the first city in Europe and the second city in the world to have a full-time electric tram network running through the city, following San Francisco, California, of the United States. In 1914, it was the site of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by a local Young Bosnia activist Gavrilo Princip, a murder that sparked World War I. This resulted in the end of Austro-Hungarian rule in Bosnia and the creation of the multicultural Kingdom of Yugoslavia in the Balkan region.

Later, after World War II, the area came under control of the communist Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina within the republic also known as Second Yugoslavia. As Sarajevo was designated as this larger republic's capital, its population and businesses expanded rapidly, with investment in infrastructure and economic development.

In 1984 the socialist republic hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics, which marked a prosperous era for the city. However, after the start of the Yugoslav Wars, the city suffered the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare, for a total of 1,425 days, from April 1992 to February 1996. This was during the Bosnian War and the breakup of Yugoslavia, under nationalist ethnic passions that tore families apart and resulted in genocide and massacres.

With continued post-war reconstruction in the aftermath, Sarajevo is the fastest growing city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The travel guide series Lonely Planet ranked Sarajevo as the 43rd best city in the world. In December 2009, it recommended Sarajevo as one of the top ten cities to visit in 2010.

In 2011, Sarajevo was nominated as the 2014 European Capital of Culture. It was selected to host the European Youth Olympic Festival. In addition, in October 2019, Sarajevo was designated as a UNESCO Creative City for having placed culture at the center of its development strategies. It is also ranked as one of the world's eighteen Cities of Film. #sarajevo #sarajevobosnia

Meaning in Persian – Turkish – Bosnian (Saray-ovasi – the plains around the palace, Sarajevo planes); Turkih (Saray-Bosna).
Half a millennium ago in Bosnia, a town nestled in the valley below mountain Trebevic, named after either a palace in the fields or the fields around the palace. Bosnian sanjak-bey Isabeg Ishakovic erected his palace on the left bank of the Miljacka River, built a bridge and founded the bazaar.
Sarajevo has always been an intersection of important roads from Eastern to Western Europe, from the Mediterranean basin to Central Europe and vice versa. “This is a city that, in the context of different historical events, has for centuries been a shelter and crossroads of worlds, with routes to Istanbul, Zagreb, Cetinje – Belgrade, Vienna – Budapest and Jerusalem.” Through history, Sarajevo become a bridge where the Orient and the West both clashed and merged.
The city itself blends in harmony with its natural surroundings. It is bordered by hills on the north, and Mt. Trebević on the south. The Sarajevo plane stretches in the west, with the Bosna River sour at the foothill of Mt. Igman. Mountains Igman, Bjelašnica, Treskavica and Jahorina are all a stone’s throw away. Numerous records in travelogues are a testament to natural beauties of Sarajevo. The city is often described as “a gem among emeralds”, “magical pearl in a green oasis”, “most beautifully positioned city”.
The city is located at an average of 550 meters above sea level, while its settlements on the slopes of the surrounding hills and mountains rise up to 700 meters above sea level.
Sarajevo and its history began to emerge in the valley of the Miljacka River. The river is 36 kilometres long, formed by the Paljanska and the Mokranjska Miljacka coming together near the village of Bulozi. It flows into the Bosna River as its right tributary, near the village of Butila. The river is most likely named after the sludge that colours the water in red during rainy seasons. There are three other rivers in the wider area of Sarajevo: Mošćanica, Željeznica and Bosnia; hence, the city has very favourable hydrological conditions and high-quality water.
Since the establishment in 1462, Sarajevo was the seat of the province within the Ottoman Empire for over four centuries, monarchy seat of the Provincial Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Austro-Hungarian occupation, and since 1945 the capital of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since 1995, Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Craft beers in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is playing its part in the world craft beer boom, with small breweries around the country flourishing.
It all started when small breweries in numerous towns and cities including Sarajevo, Vogošća, Banja Luka, Mostar, Doboj, Livno and Široki Brijeg established themselves.

Here are some of the craft beers in Bosnia and Herzegovina:
Lovac Barrique 2015 – Lovac Craft Pivovara – Spancil Hill

[Bosnia and Herzegovina] Sarajevo Old Town |

Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina in Time Lapse

This is another one of my time lapse videos, this time shot here in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina. I shot all this time lapse footage of Sarajevo in just one day, and it came out pretty cool. Sarajevo is such a diverse city, in this short 30 second video there are mosques and churches, and there are buildings from the Ottoman Empire, and the Austro-Hungarian. The people, food and everything about the city is extremely diverse.
Anyways, I hope you like the Sarajevo time lapse, and you're liking the series so far. I'm going to try to build a massive time-lapse video featuring my best stuff soon, so stay tuned and don't forget to subscribe.

Haris Youth Hostel Review|Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herezgovina

Vratnik Mejdan, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Where to start, so many great things to say about this place. First of all, Haris is a DON! Very welcoming dude, he'll make you feel at home from the moment you walk through the doors. He has managed to create a great family vibe that keeps people returning to his hostel. You are bound to meet some very interesting characters during your stay here and makes a couple of friends. BBQ time on the balcony is the BEST! 11/10. Definitely a great place to hostel it up in Sarajevo.
