Timor-Leste
Country in Asia
Timor-Leste, or East Timor, a Southeast Asian nation occupying half the island of Timor, is ringed by coral reefs teeming with marine life. Landmarks in the capital, Dili, speak to the country's struggles for independence from Portugal in 1975 and then Indonesia in 2002. The iconic 27m-tall Cristo Rei de Dili statue sits on a hilltop high over the city, with sweeping views of the surrounding bay. ― Google

Timor Leste South Coast motorbike tour: Same - Viqueque - Watulari - Iliomar - Lospalos
Wow it was a real adventure. The least populated and the most infested with crocs South Coast of Timor Leste boasts the worst roads in the country, best people and most secluded areas without a single person nearby.
I was warned that if my bike gets broken there's no chance to get out of the south coast, but it's not quite true. Although the traffic is really very scarce in comparison with North Coast (Baucau, Liquica, Dili), there are trucks passing once in a while. And there are villages on the way. I had a flat tire once and managed to find a new one and people with instruments who changed it for me.
The biggest challenge in the districts is food. There are very few places where you can have good hot freshly cooked food. Your only option might often be instant noodles PopMie.

Lekiraka (Reki Raka) caves in Loihuno, Viqueque district in Timor Leste
To get to these caves you have to go from Venilale towards Viqueque. Soon after Ossu you'll see a roadside sign pointing left to Wailakurini Village Hotel. Then turn left and go up in the mountains passing by the hotel and following the main road. It's hard to get lost there. Then just ask locals to show you the house where lives the man responsible for assisting tourists. The entry fee is 3$ and 4$ is the guide who will guide you up to and inside the caves. The caves are of middle size without any particular sightseeings or animals living there, so it's not worth a special visit but if you're passing by Loihuno you can do it - it won't take long since the caves are pretty close and the trail up there through the jungle is quite enjoyable.
You might ask local people for home stay accommodation to explore the nearby area for a couple of days and maybe climb some mountains, but I don't recommend to stay at that shitty ridiculously overpriced hotel (more like a guest house) Wailakurini.

BAUCAU'S BATS| The Sacred Bats of Baucau, East Timor
Baucau is the second-largest city in East Timor, after Dili, the capital, which lies 122 km (76 mi) to its west. It has about 16,000 inhabitants, and is the capital of Baucau municipality. In this municipality, about 10 kilometers south of the city, lies a bat colony that resides on a single tree for generations.
Watch the Journey:
Baucau - former capital or Portuguese Timor (Vila Salazar) and second largest town in East Timor
I've combined a few videos made through several years in Timor from 2016 to 2020. Baucau has always occupied a special place in my heart and I never missed an opportunity to stop by on the way to the Eastern villages like Lospalos, Viqueque, Baguia and, of course, Jaco Island.
Keep your expectations curbed and you won't be disappointed. Baucau does not have as much entertainment at night as Dili and is pretty quiet unless it's a holiday. But that's its main charm - a quiet weekend getaway place just within 2-3 hours drive with spectacular beaches and mountainous vistas just within 30 min drive from Baucau. That's why many people use it as a transit base to go further towards the mountains of Ossu, waterfalls of Venilale, caves of Viqueque or pristine blue waters of Jaco.
Stopping in pousada for a late lunch and a swim in piscina is a must do for a tired traveller coming back to Dili after a visit to the districts.

BAUCAU - second largest city in Timor-Leste: day trip from Dili through Manatuto, Laleia, Vemasse
Left Dili at 7 in the morning, I headed east by a wonderful coastal road towards Baucau, the second largest city in Timor-Leste (East Timor). On the way I visited a small town of Manatuto, where you can observe surroundings from a hill with a Statue of St. Antonio. Further in Laleia town I explored stunning pink 100-years old Portuguese church.
Enjoy the stroll in the colonial old town of Baucau, where Portuguese legacy is well-preserved.

Explore Timor Island | Adventure Travel Guide | Kupang, Kefa, Atambua&Timor Leste
Hey guys, welcome back to Lion on the Road, a different way to bring travels into your life. In this Vlog we gonna Explore Timor ISLAND (the Indonesian side) on the road & from the drone. Timor is an island at the southern end of Maritime Southeast Asia, north of the Timor Sea. The island is divided between the sovereign states of East Timor on the eastern part and Indonesia on the western part. The Indonesian part, also known as West Timor, constitutes part of the province of East Nusa Tenggara. Within West Timor lies an exclave of East Timor called Oecusse District.
Timor and its offshore islands such as Atauro, a former place of exile increasingly known for its beaches and coral, as well as Jaco along with Wetar and the other Barat Daya Islands to the northeast constitute the Timor and Wetar deciduous forests ecoregion. The natural vegetation was tropical dry broadleaf forests with an undergrowth of shrubs and grasses supporting a rich wildlife[citation needed]. However much of the original forest has been cleared for farming,[citation needed] especially on the coasts of Timor and on the smaller islands like Atauro. Apart from one large block in the centre of Timor only patches remain.[citation needed] This ecoregion is part of the Wallacea area with a mixture of plants and animals of Asian and Australasian origin; it lies in the western part of Wallacea, in which Asian species predominate

The earliest historical record about Timor island is the 14th-century Nagarakretagama, Canto 14, that identifies Timur as an island within Majapahit's realm. Timor was incorporated into ancient Javanese, Chinese and Indian trading networks of the 14th century as an exporter of aromatic sandalwood, slaves, honey and wax, and was settled by both the Portuguese, in the end of the 16th century, and the Dutch, based in Kupang, in the mid-17th century.
As the nearest island with a European settlement at the time, Timor was the destination of William Bligh and seamen loyal to him following the infamous Mutiny on the Bounty in 1789. It was also where survivors of the wrecked HMS Pandora, sent to arrest the Bounty mutineers, landed in 1791 after that ship sank in the Great Barrier Reef.
The island has been politically divided in two parts for centuries. The Dutch and Portuguese fought for control of the island until it was divided by treaty in 1859, but they still did not formally resolve the matter of the boundary until 1912. West Timor, was known as Dutch Timor until 1949 when it became Indonesian Timor, a part of the nation of Indonesia which was formed from the old Netherlands East Indies; while East Timor was known as Portuguese Timor, a Portuguese colony until 1975. It includes the exclave of Oecussi-Ambeno in West Timor.
Kupang was an important port and trading point during the Portuguese and Dutch colonial eras. There are ruins and remnant signs of the colonial presence in the city.
Representatives of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) approached Kupang in 1613 after having conquered the Portuguese fort on Solor. At this time the place and its hinterland was governed by a raja of the Helong tribe which claimed descent from Ceram in Maluku. Kupang was well situated for strategic control over parts of Timor, since it was possible to monitor shipping activities to the south coast of the island. Moreover, the Koinino River provided fresh water for the inhabitants

NEWEST TREASURE of Southeast Asia: Cristo Rei of Dili and ambience of Timor-Leste (East Timor)

Riding “Close to God” on Mount Ramelau, The Highest Mountain in Timor-Leste
An epic 2,238 metre descent from the highest point in Timor-Leste. The established trail follows the ridge from the summit to the river below Nonomogue village: from high alpine forests, through grassy meadows and thick jungle. The trail is a mix of single track and fire roads, with a few more technical options along the way.
This is arguably one of the most stunning adventure Mountain Bike trails in the Asia/Pacific region.

Baguia - a lovely mountain village near Matebien mountain, Timor Leste | Багия, Восточый Тимор
Baguia is the best place to stay if you're heading to Metebien. There are no hotels whatsoever with the only option being homestay or church. I used the latter. You just need to ask for mana Martina, who's the nicest lady, living with her family behind the church.

Tutuala Lospalos - Timor Leste
Lospalos is a wonderful place to visit. And has a nice beach on the island of Jaco, and also ilikere'kere which is a beautiful sighting to see ... and also the beautiful Com beach and many tourists who visit the place.
Tutuala is a village and suco in the subdistrict of
Tutuala ( Lautém District , East Timor ). It is situated at the extreme eastern end of Timor . [1] Its population at the 2004 census was 3,707. The subdistrict of Tutuala comprises two sucos, including Mehara and Tutuala with the subdistrict administrator residing in Tutuala. The suco of Tutuala comprised four hamlets (aldeia): Ioro, Pitileti, Tchailoro, and Vero. [2] The main Fataluku language areas of the country are in Tutuala, as well as Lautem and Fuiloro .
Discover Tiris Maunmera - spectacular waterfall near Laulara, Dare in Timor Leste.
I found this place by chance - just made a right turn from the main road to Aileu and went on straight until the last village where the road ends and where you should park the bike and walk down through the village along a narrow winding trail with breathtaking views. I took a local boy as a guide for 5$ and he was very helpful because the trail was quite difficult and sometimes confusing.
But it was worth the pain in my thighs. The waterfall is beautiful even though it wasn't rainy season and the river wasn't full. There was a group of young TImorese arrived from Dili that were a bit too noisy. I've made all this way not to listen to shitty music from shitty loudspeakers of their shitty phones accompanied by random bursts of yelling.
So my advice - go on week days.
