Explore VINTAR Ilocos Norte - Exciting Destinations | Travel & Tourism Philippines [Virtual Tour]

Explore the Municipality of Vintar one of the most exciting travel destinations in Ilocos Norte. With great outdoors, it is home to an amazing array of sights and thrilling activities. Even first time visitors to Vintar will quickly be enthralled by how fun and fascinating Vintar really can be. Join Miss Vintar, Julia Yzabelle Andrei A. Echepare, in celebrating our home, Ilocos Norte! Miss Ilocos Norte 2021 #MissIN2021 - Vintar, officially the Municipality of Vintar (Ilocano: Ili ti Vintar; Tagalog: Bayan ng Vintar), is a 1st class municipality in the province of Ilocos Norte, Philippines. Vintar is the largest municipality in Ilocos Norte. Its patron saint is Saint Nicholas de Tolentino. It is home to one of the biggest convents in the province where it houses the Saint Nicholas Academy. It is also where Vintar Dam is located, first dam funded by the World Bank in Southeast Asia- an important cultural property listed by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and is also the site of the Umok ni Siwawer Eco-Tourism Nature Park, the town's popular picnic resort.

Tourist Attractions:
Mount Baguinsuso
Also known as Masadsada, which is an Ilocano word that means “passable valley”, is an active volcano that is located in Barangay Ester. This mountain plays a huge role in Vintar’s history, as it is where the town’s name was taken from. It stretches across several barangays, from Lubnac to Namoroc.

Vintar Dam
Once, this dam was the most visited tourist spot in the province, and now the town has set its heart of bringing its glory back by offering some great activities, such as kayaking, to attract tourists here. This is also where you can watch beautiful sunsets.

Vintar Hidden Falls
This place is the perfect place to be if you are looking for a refreshing and rejuvenating experience in Vintar. An unspoiled paradise, it is great for a hike, after which you can splash down into the clean and fresh waters.

Festivals and Food
Like other towns in the Philippines, Vintar also celebrates its town fiesta every year, which is particularly known as the Siwawer Festival, in honor of the siwawer and canaoay birds that only live in areas of Vintar. The event last for 12 days every December 19 to 30.

As for the food, the town is known for its bibingka or tubung cake, which is made from glutinous rice flour, sweetened molasses and desiccated coconut, topped with grated cheese. In fact, the people of Vintar have snatched the Guinness World Record for making the longest tubung cake in the world, which fed almost all of them. Aside from the bibingka, the place is also known for its tupig (a native rice cake) and bagnet (a crispy chicharon famous in Ilocos).

Things to Do
Visit its convent.
As previously mentioned, Vintar is home to one of the biggest convents in Ilocos Norte that houses the Saint Nicolas Institute. An earthquake in 1931 partially destroyed the convent and its church, but the buildings were restored 5 years later. By visiting this attraction, you will get a glimpse of the town’s rich history.

The Ilocos Region is the first region located in northwestern Luzon. It is comprised of two major provinces: Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur. There’s no right answer on which one to visit first, the goal is to visit both! You’ll enjoy Laoag in the north, famously dubbed as the Sunshine City, or to the south in Vigan where you will be taken back to the Spanish colonization era in the Philippines. Whether you want to go on a history or nature trip, Ilocos will leave you craving for more every time you visit.

See and Do
In Ilocos Norte, we have Laoag, the capital of Ilocos Norte. One of the most notable destinations here is the two-story mansion that was the former holiday home of late President Marcos and his family. It is now a museum, where visitors are free to explore and check out almost every nook and cranny of the house. When you’re done, you can head for Paoay and find tranquility by the lake, go to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Paoay Church, or ride a 4x4 and slide down the sand dunes. If you have more time, you can take a visit to the Batac museum and view the memorabilia of the late President Marcos.

In Ilocos Sur, you’ll be delighted to step into the picturesque Vigan, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It feels like time traveling to the past, as the Spanish-era houses have been well-preserved over the years. While walking in the streets, don’t forget to grab delicacies that are unique to the town such as Vigan longganisa and Ilocos empanada.

Where to Stay
Ilocos is a popular tourist spot and therefore has a lot of establishments for visitors. Whether you pick north or south, you’ll be able to see hotel options that will suit your budget and taste.

Ilocos Norte (Ilocano: Amianan nga Ilocos; Probinsia ti Ilocos Norte) is a province of the Philippines located in the Ilocos Region. Its capital is Laoag City, located in the northwest corner of Luzón Island, bordering Cagayan and Apayao to the east, and Abra to the southeast, and Ilocos Sur to the southwest. Ilocos Norte faces the West Philippine Sea to the west and the Luzon Strait to the north. Ilocos Norte is noted for being the birthplace of the former President Ferdinand E. Marcos.

Vintar, officially the Municipality of Vintar (Ilocano: Ili ti Vintar; Tagalog: Bayan ng Vintar), is a 1st class municipality of Ilocos Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 33,339 people.
Vintar is the largest municipality in Ilocos Norte and is the largest municipality in terms of land area, located 7 kilometers north of Laoag City, it is politically subdivided into 33 barangays which are grouped into 6 subdivisions.
It is home to one of the biggest convents in the province where it houses the Saint Nicholas Academy. It is also where Vintar Dam is located, the first dam funded by the World Bank in Southeast Asia- an important cultural property listed by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and is also the site of the Umok ni Siwawer Eco-Tourism Nature Park, the town's popular picnic resort.
Etymology:
Vintar derived its name from the Ilocano word, intar, which used to describe the formation or order taken by the subject from their ruler whenever the chief called them to attention. It is said that a visiting Spanish missionary heard the word and added the letter V, referring to the “V” formation that the missionary saw.
History:
The town's earliest settlers are believed to be of Malay origin. They first settled on a hill overlooking the Bislak. The town was founded by Spanish missionaries who got lost in the woods while hunting between Sarrat and Piddig. Vintar became a visita of Bacarra but it was later established as a Parish of San Nicolas de Tolentino. In 1763, Vintar was reverted to a visita until it became independent in 1774.
In 1903, Vintar was annexed as a barrio of Bacarra. It gained its separation and independence in 1909.
Vintar celebrates the feast of St. Nicholas every 10 September- a religious tradition inherited from the Augustinians that still practice the distribution of “tinapay ni San Nicolas” (unleavened bread). But the Siwawer Festival, the annual town fiesta of Vintar is held from December 26–30 of every year.
The people of Vintar engage in farming, fishing, and herding. The town is generally rural but famous all over the province for its beautiful women with strong Spanish features. Hence the town has its monicker, “The Home of Beautiful People”. Vintar is also the site of four (4) important cultural properties listed by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. These are the Vintar Dam, the Old Municipal Building, the San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish Church, and the Gabaldon Building.
The Municipality of Vintar is headed by the Local Chief Executive, Honorable Mayor Richard Agregado Degala from 2022 up to the present.
