🇮🇹 Trieste, Italy - one of the richest regions of Italy 🇮🇹

Trieste is a city and seaport in northeastern Italy. It is situated towards the end of a narrow strip of Italian territory lying between the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia, which lies almost immediately south and east of the city. It is also located near Croatia some further 30 kilometres south. Trieste is located at the head of the Gulf of Trieste and throughout history it has been influenced by its location at the crossroads of Latin, Slavic, and Germanic cultures. It is the capital of the autonomous region Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the Province of Trieste.

Trieste was one of the oldest parts of the Habsburg Monarchy. In the 19th century, it was the most important port of one of the Great Powers of Europe. As a prosperous seaport in the Mediterranean region, Trieste became the fourth largest city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the fin de siècle period at the end of the 19th century it emerged as an important hub for literature and music. Trieste underwent an economic revival during the 1930s, and Trieste was an important spot in the struggle between the Eastern and Western blocs after the Second World War. Today, the city is in one of the richest regions of Italy, and has been a great centre for shipping, through its port (Port of Trieste), shipbuilding and financial services.

Triest - Italy

A combination of geographic and historical factors has made Trieste a city unique in its kind and a fascinating place to visit. It is not the typical Italian city you may expect to visit.

The Gulf of Trieste and Miramare Castle (Italy)

Beginning in the town of Opicina, behind the hills of Trieste, we trekked to the suburb of Miramare and paid a visit to the historical Miramare Castle, an edifice that symbolises the Habsburg’s influence and power over the region up until the early 20th Century. Along the way we also came across the village of Prosecco, which apparently gave its namesake to the now famous wine that we know today as Prosecco. Our last leg of the walk took place several kilometers away from Miramare in the town of Sistiana, where we walked along the Rilke-Weg to Duino Castle.

One day in Trieste, Italy (what to visit)

One day in Trieste, Italy (what to visit)
The Province of Trieste is situated towards the end of a narrow strip of land in southeast Friuli Venezia Giulia, between the Adriatic Sea and Italy's border with Slovenia. This is an extraordinary destination for its historic treasures, artworks and middle-European character. Off Trieste's coast is its broad Gulf, with numerous tiny bays, small harbours and breathtaking reefs; of course, Miramare Castle is accompanied by the splendid blue of the sea. The area of Trieste is characterized by the steep karstic landscape continually revealing different, unique and charming features. Close to the coast is a rocky moor with Mediterranean vegetation, where the Bora wind blows, while inland are hills with hollows and scrubs. Several protected areas in the region include the Val Rosandra Nature Reserve, the Marine Reserve of Miramare, and the Falesie di Duino Nature Reserve. The Marine Reserve of Miramare is located in a coastal sea landscape characterized by sharp rocks and diverse underwater flora and fauna. The Falesie di Duino Nature Reserve is known for its white cliffs that overhang the sea. The charm of the area resides not only in its natural traits but also in the elegant city of Trieste, where the Habsburg influence is noticeable; the inland small towns with their longstanding traditions; and other quaint touristic draws on the coast - countless gems set within this tiny strip of land.

A local’s guide to Trieste: 6 top tips
============================
Strada Napoleonica
Discovering Trieste also means discovering The Carso, a steep limestone plateau that follows the Gulf of Trieste and the Slovenia border, is perfect for picnicking, hiking, biking (including e-biking) and rock climbing or just picnicking. There are half-a-dozen trails, but the Strada Napoleonica is the perfect introduction. Take a number 4 bus from Piazza Oberdan to the Opicina obelisk and begin a bracing 5km clifftop hike to the village of Prosecco (it gave its name to what is now one of the world’s most popular wines, though production is now concentrated 100km west in Veneto). Like all Carso hamlets it has an osmiza, a pop-up cantina serving vino for under €1 a glass. Prosecco’s Osmiza Verginella is one of the rare ones open throughout the year, with incredible views down the wild coastline.

Trattoria alla Sorgente
Trieste is excellent for seafood lovers, with the freshest produce arriving straight from the Adriatic, cooked simply and at very reasonable prices in the many traditional osterie and trattorie. With its rustic wooden tables and sunny terrace, the friendly Trattoria alla Sorgente is an excellent for lunch choice, but popular with locals, so call first to book. The abundant antipasti misti (€14), with tender octopus, plump scallops, grilled sardines and creamy baccalà is enough for two, while the creative pastas include chunky paccheri (tubes) with baby squid and cherry tomatoes. Closer to the docks are two other top addresses: the lively Osteria Istriano, for alici impanati (€10), tiny breaded anchovies, or the more elegant Trattoria Nero di Seppia, which has a chocolate panna cotta (€6.50) to die for.

Il Posto delle Fragole
Another of Trieste’s important symbols of freedom, the Posto delle Fragole (strawberry patch) is a bar, restaurant and cultural centre in the grounds of Trieste’s former psychiatric hospital, in the extensive Parco San Giovanni above the city. Some 45 years ago, this was the first Italian city to end the forced enclosure of mentally ill people, opening the hospital gates to all in the 1970s. Today students attend university courses here, and many of the distinctive pastel-yellow Liberty buildings are venues for the performing arts, cinema, a radio station (Radio Fragola), concerts, and late-night summer parties. The park and its famous rose gardens are easily reached on the number 12 bus from the city centre.

Stazione Rogers
Trieste comes alive in the early evening when aperitivo time kicks off, with Aperol and Campari spritz from €3 with free snacks. There are plenty of bars in the old town, but a fun offbeat address is this once-abandoned modernist petrol station – designed in 1953 by Ernesto Rogers, editor of Domus magazine and cousin of Richard Rogers. Today, instead of serving petrol, it serves alternative culture for the city, and is especially popular with Trieste’s large student population. Inside, there is a venue for performances, exhibitions and concerts, while the forecourt is a sprawling outdoor bar overlooking the marina, that stays open till 2am, with DJs and live music.

Boat trip to Muggia
A visit to Trieste has to include a boat trip, and a good option is the Delfino Verde ferry that links Trieste and the Venetian port of Muggia. The journey only takes 20 minutes as it hugs the bay towards the frontier with Slovenia, and Muggia is a gem, with its tiny harbour filled with fishing boats. Have a drink at the local watering hole, Ai Fumi, then, further down the street, eat a classic fritto misto at Osteria al Corridoio, owned by Sabrina, whose son Mauro is the fisherman.

Bagno Alla Lanterna
At this historic public beach, there is proof that a wall does not have to divide but can actually give liberty to people. In a unique Trieste story, male and female bathers are divided by a wall at the tiny Lanterna beach, known popularly as El Pedochin. This may sound sexist and politically incorrect but I can assure you that the opposite is true. A local documentary presented at Cannes in 2016, The Last Resort, explains how the division lets bathers be themselves. Ask anyone here – teenagers, mums with kids, retired people – no one would ever get rid of the wall. The best way to understand is to come and see for yourself. Entrance is a symbolic €1, and of course there is a bar just outside where everyone has lunch or an evening aperitivo together.

#179 - Italy, Trieste area - Basovizza to Villa Opicina (09/2016)

The first movie of the last ride of Season 2016! And surely one of the best! Even if it is just 63 km. Now, I don't exactly start in Basovizza but it's close enough and along the main road towards Trieste. But immediately, I get off that road and along the paths along the edges of the hills surrounding Trieste and offering some spectacular views, along with a spectacular ride!

Luckily, I did manage to find ways across (or better, under) the main roads and I managed to follow the desired path straight into Villa Opcicina (best known for its tram connection with Trieste and then trains to Slovenia). However, a word of caution. Two words, actually. 1) Parts of the path are very rocky, even when it doesn't feel like it and I had a nasty hit resulting with a flat tyre, throwing my carefully planned schedule quite a bit off. 2) A good part of this entire section, to Villa Opcina, is a good climb. Luckily, not all the way, just the last part, but I found it rather challenging. Yes, yes, I find every climb rather challenging, good point, but still - be warned. As for the rest of the ride... Well, you'll see some of it now and then the rest in the following movies.

LIFESTYLEHOTELS Hollmann am Meer, Trieste, Italy

The Hollmann Residenza in Trieste is perfect for people who want to spend their holidays off the beaten path. As in the other Hollmann houses, people will find a home away from home that cannot cope with
the standards of hotel rooms, that like to sweep their eyes to the horizon and let themselves be carried away on vacation.

The charming little stone house on the cliffs of the Adriatic coast is a house for all seasons - always pleasantly air-conditioned, with shady retreats and wonderful places for sunbathing. The private beach with jetty is open around the clock and invites to sunbathe, swim and enjoy.

Not far from the Miramare Castle, the 120 sqm house offers space for up to 6 people and serves as the setting for a seaside holiday: an unusual apartment that will delight its guests.

The house has a fully equipped kitchen and 2 air-conditioned bedrooms, each with a sofa bed. The parking for two cars are also precious because of their turning ability - rarely on the Costiera.

Cab Ride Villa Opicina - Ljubljana (Spielfeld–Trieste Railway-Italy-Slovenia) train driver's view 4K

In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view on the Spielfeld–Trieste Railway between Villa Opicina in Italy and the Slovenian capital city of Ljubljana in 4K/60 frames per second.

The Spielfeld–Trieste railway is a double-track, electrified main line in parts of Austria, Slovenia and Italy. It was built as a section of the Austrian Southern Railway (österreichische Südbahn Vienna–Trieste) by the state-owned k.k. Südliche Staatsbahn (Southern Railway) and from 1858 onward operated for decades by the Austrian Southern Railway Company (Südbahngesellschaft), a large private railway company in the Austrian Empire and Austria-Hungary. It runs from Spielfeld-Straß over the Austrian-Slovenian border at the Municipality of Šentilj, continuing via Maribor, Ljubljana and the Slovenian karst to the Adriatic port of Trieste, today in Italy. It continues from Spielfeld-Straß to Vienna as the Southern Railway nowadays.
The historic Southern Railway is one of the two main axes of rail traffic in Slovenia. It still serves as an international link between Slovenia, Austria and Italy.

Sit Back, Relax, and Enjoy watching this FULL- length scenic rail trip video in 4K quality.

This Relaxing Video is best watched on a 4K big-screen TV sitting on a cosy sofa or armchair.
