YEREVAN, Armenia: Top sights and attractions of the Pink City (2016)
TURN ON SUBTITLES FOR EXPLANATORY NOTES ABOUT THE SIGHTS AND ATTRACTIONS!!
(I am aware of the fact that this video does not have my audio commentary, so I added explanatory subtitles! This was my very first video on YouTube and I have been trying to improve things.)
A weekend in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia
Yerevan is the capital of Armenia, a country located in the Caucasus, bordering Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Iran. It is largest city of Armenia as well as one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities.
In addition to this video, also check out my blog post 10 reasons why I fell in love with Yerevan, Armenia:
In this video, you will see Yerevan's most important sights and tourist attractions, including the following:
Republic Square can be considered the main square of Yerevan. The Government House, the History Museum and the National Gallery, the Marriott Hotel and several other government buildings are located on this huge square. Originally designed by Alexander Tamanyan in 1924, Republic Square is the favorite hangout of the locals. With its unique pink neoclassical buildings and the reflecting pool, Republic Square can easily be considered Yerevan’s architectural highlight. What I found remarkable about this square was the unified architectural style – all buildings share the same pink-ish and yellow-ish neoclassical design.
The Cascade is a staircase that connects Yerevan’s center (Kentron) with the Monument neighborhood. It consists of multiple levels and a total of 572 steps. Apart from its architectural magnificence, the Cascade offers sweeping views of the city and, on clear days, mighty Mount Ararat in the background.
The Cafesjian Center for the Arts is an arts museum located within the Cascade complex. It offers a variety of exhibitions and dozens of modern and contemporary sculptures by well-known international sculptors. The sculptures are scattered around Cascade Park, the green area in the lower section of the Cascade complex.

MT.ARARAT | KHOR VIRAP MONASTERY | NOAH ARK - ARMENIA BORDER | TRAVEL VIDEO | 4K HD | FEB 2019
MOUNT ARARAT
Mount Ararat is located in eastern Turkey on the coast of the Araks River, 16 kilometers from Iran and 32 kilometers from Armenia. It is actually a volcano, and science suggests that it was active as early as the 3rd millennium BC. The last eruption of Mount Ararat occurred in the mid-19th century, causing a strong earthquake which destroyed St. Jacob Monastery and the small village of Arguri. Today it is listed as a dormant volcano.
Mount Ararat actually consists of two mountains which are merged at the base: Masis and Sis, also known as Big Ararat (5137 meters) and Small Ararat (3927 meters). Both peaks, which are only 11 kilometers apart from each other, are composed of basalt and are located in an area called Sardarul-Bulaki Valley.
Big Ararat is the highest mountain in Turkey. Its slopes are covered year-round with snow and glaciers beginning at the 4200 meter mark, while its caves, which were used as homes by some of the early Anatolian Christians, are located at approximately 2100 meters. Visitors can still see images of crosses and other religious symbols on the cave walls.
Small Ararat is located to the east of Big Ararat. There is little vegetation on its slopes due to a thick layer of ash, lava and tephra deposits. Nearby is a national park covering more than 88 thousand hectares, where researchers are still trying to find the remains of Noah's Ark. Mount Ararat itself remains a popular trekking destination in Turkey
KHOR VIRAP
Every Armenian has heard about this unique architectural monument, which nowadays has become one of the main attractions of Ararat Province. This fortified monastery is a place of pilgrimage and a holy site for the Armenian Apostolic Church.
The history of the site dates back to a pagan temple that stood here for centuries before Christ’s birth. An important visit happened at Khor Virap, between Gregory, son of Parthian nobles, and King Trdat III, of Armenia. Parthia and Armenia had been fighting for generations, and Gregory and Trdat were finally meeting after their fathers had been involved in a deadly battle. Trdat wanted to lay flowers at the pagan temple, and Gregory was forced to confess that he was Christian. Trdat threw Gregory in a deep pit and kept him there for 13 years. As the years went on, Trdat started to feel ill. His wife, who had already converted to Christianity, told him that he would feel better after he released Gregory, and she turned out to be right. After being cured, Trdat converted to Christianity in 301, making Armenia the first official Christian country in the world. Gregory became St. Gregory the Illuminator, revered for converting Armenia to Christianity.
In 642 Catholicos Nerses built a white limestone chapel above the dungeon. It looked like Zvartnots Temple, which had been destroyed by an earthquake. The chapel was destroyed later, though, and then rebuilt. The site was used for construction of the existing St. Astvatsatsin Church in 1662, with the belfry on it western side. The pit is still open for people to climb down, though it’s a quite a steep descent down a ladder. In fact, the name Khor Virap means “deep pit”, named after the prison where St. Gregory the Illuminator was held.
The monastery is located close to the border between Armenia and Turkey, on a hill near the village of Pokr Vedi. Long ago it was the site where Artashat, the ancient Armenian capital, was located.
The pit dungeon is 4.4 m in diameter and 6 m deep. Tourists can descend down using a narrow ladder in order to experience the atmosphere, which is mostly quite dark. Khor Virap Monastery also hosts a theological seminary and a residence of the Armenian Catholicos. There is also the most beautiful view of Mount Ararat and entire Ararat Valley from the monastery.
Highly recommended if you visit Armenia or Turkey

Episode 11 - Armenia - Alaverdi, Areni, Goris & Etchmiadzin / 365 days off - Travel around the world
ARMENIA: ALAVERDI, DILIJAN, ARENI, GORIS AND ETCHMIADZIN
Travelling on our own to all corners of Armenia was definitely a great experience. From a cultural point of view, we did stop 25 times to visit monasteries, churches and historical sites.
Our 3 favorites were:
Noravank, on a hill at the end of its canyon, it really had a Grand Canyon feel
Marmashen, at the bottom of a lushy green valley, a very peaceful atmosphere and a great site for a picnic.
The Noratus Cemetery, a field of Khachkars, close to Lake Sevan, strolling amongst the cross-stones and their unique carvings let us see one of Armenia’s identities.
From a human point of view, the last 10 days were absolutely fantastic! We met Olga, Irina & Stepan in Alaverdi, Davit and his sisters in Areni, Arthur, Sonna and their lovely children in Etchmiadzin. We had a great time with all of them including the best local and fresh meals we had so far.
If you are around instead of taking day tours from Yerevan, you really should rent a car to explore the country and spend time with people in the different provinces.
WE DID SPECIFICALLY ENJOY
The Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin, we had a guided tour by Anna & Anoush, 2 young adults from the Alaverdi English Club (see Best Kept Secret Tip section for details).
Goshavank, another Monastery, we were welcomed by a young priest who saw us looking for frescoes and carvings described in the Bradt guide. Unfortunately he could only speak a few words of english but one of his friend was there and helped with the translation calling another friend on his mobile! The visit took quite some time and we were moved by the priest trying to pass on his passion for his church.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Iris B&B in Alaverdi, the best homestay in the Lori region. We even got interviewed by the Armenian TV during our stay. They were filming a documentary about the B&B in the country.
Areni Wine Art in Areni, Davit and his family are doing huge efforts to drag tourists in the village. They organize hiking trips, organic meals including traditional Armenian barbeque in the “tonir“, dancing and cooking lessons or anything you would request from them.
Artson B&B in Etchmiadzin, Arthur and Sonna’s goal is to make you feel at home and they’re pretty good at it! All the family is eager to exchange with you about the country, travelling and Armenian history. You may be lucky enough to attend a private concert given by their 2nd daughter, Hasmik, who is studying vocal art in College.
RESTAURANTS
As stated before do not even bother looking for restaurants while in homestays. All of them will gladly prepare you fresh local food at unbeatable fares.
BEST KEPT SECRET TIP
The English Club in Alaverdi, is a NGO trying to improve the economic situation teaching english to anyone interested in the village. They are really doing a great job and we liked very much spending some time with its members. They are arranging day hikes and several guided tours to the historical sites of the province. We enjoyed the guided tours at Sanahin and Haghpat very much. The young guides gave us insights about the local history that a common guide book would never tell. Do not hesitate to contact them when in the region to get your private guided tour!
To all the English Club Members, thank you so much for your warm welcome during our visit to the Club, keep up the good work and hope to come back soon!
The Geghama Mountain Range in Armenia | 4K resolution
Did you know that some of the mountains in Armenia have volcanic origins? The Geghama mountain range is home to several extinct volcanoes and several rivers like Azat, Vedi, Bakhtak. and more. Some of the volcanic craters, though, have turned into mountain lakes with time, the most significant of which is Lake Akna.
Due to its incredibly beautiful scenery, vibrant colors, and diverse fauna, the Geghama mountains will leave all explorers with high impressions. The mountains present perfect scenes to landscape photographers, astonishing artifacts to culture and history enthusiasts, and a strong desire to come back and explore even more of it.
There are a number of small business enterprises founded around the Geghama mountain range, and many of them are Ararat Box’s vendors. You can show them your support by subscribing to your monthly box of Armenian authentic goodies. Visit .

Things you should definitely watch in Armenia - Drone View
Watch our today birds eye view (drone) of Armenia!
Before you begin reading this amazing guide and video, please do like and subscribe. I will be posting new video about Australia for you :)
Why travel to Armenia? Because it’s a small, scrappy country that is a hotbed for history, lush as can be, and filled with some of the nicest people in the world. Don’t leave Armenia off of your list the next time you’re planning a vacation or backpacking adventure.
Armenia is a tiny country, oft-forgotten by travelers due to it being tucked away behind Turkey and its more popular neighbor, Georgia. It’s an ancient and mystical land, and a country still unspoiled by the crowds of mass tourism, even though there are many things to do in Armenia.
Its people are among the friendliest in the world, and it’s a serious hotbed for history. Some sites date back as early as 4,000 BCE. And whether you’re a lover of rolling hills, or prefer traipsing over snow-capped peaks, you’ll find what you’re looking for in the Armenian landscape. To seal the deal: it’s incredibly cheap, making it a perfect destination for budget travelers and backpackers. In three weeks of travel, I spent less than €500. Yeah, you read that right.
Don’t leave Armenia off your bucket list. It can’t be hidden away forever, and the time to visit is now before it’s truly “discovered” by mass tourism.
Once a vast civilization, it is now a tiny land-locked country situated between Iran and Georiga, and trapped between Turkey and Azerbaijan, its enemies. Its people were slaughtered by the Ottomans in a genocide that is not yet recognized by many countries in the world, and its grand buildings were ravaged by a devastating earthquake in 1988.
Despite its turbulent history, the Armenian people are fiercely proud of their country’s history, and for good reason. The Armenian civilization used to span all the way from Persia into Eastern Europe and was home to many significant historical firsts such as being the first country to make wine, and the first country to adopt Christianity.
Visas
If you’re travelling from the UK, the EU, Australia, New Zealand, the US or Canada, then the great news is that you don’t need a visa to visit Armenia and can just get a stamp on arrival, either at a land crossing or at the airport.
This is also true for the citizens of many other Middle Eastern nations, but do check before you travel as the rules can always change.
Best time to travel
Armenia has a crazy climate, in that it goes from freezing cold in the winter to boiling hot in the summer!
I guess that’s the reality of being a landlocked, mountainous country!
As a result of the climate variation, I honestly think the perfect time to travel Armenia is during the northern hemisphere spring and autumn, namely April through June and September through October respectively.
In this way, the best time to travel Armenia is similar to that of the Middle East.
Travelling during these months means you avoid the freezing conditions of the bleak winter, but you don’t risk burning to a crisp in the summer temperatures and humidity!
It’s also wildflower season during spring and conditions are perfect for hiking, which you should definitely do when you travel Armenia.
Money Matters
The currency is Armenia is the Armenian Dram… but you knew that right!
ATM’s are widespread in the cities here and easy to use with both Mastercard and Visa accepted.
However life gets very rural in Armenia very quickly, so if you’re heading out to the countryside at all, I definitely suggest taking all the cash you’ll need with you.
Transportation
Due to a lack of tourist infrastructure and some poor road conditions in parts, getting around Armenia can be a little tricky.
Public minivans, known as marshrutkas, are the cheapest way to go, but they only ply main roads and generally operate only to and from the capital.
To make matters a little more complicated, there are 6 marshrutka stations across Yerevan and finding out which buses leave from which stations is an adventure in itself!
Check out this useful website, which had the most current info I found online, otherwise ask where you’re staying for the latest details, as the often buses often change stations!
To combat the confusing minivan situation however, the good news is that hitchhiking is easy and commonplace across rural Armenia – often you’ll be picked up on the street without even having to stick your thumb out!
Otherwise, ride-sharing apps such as Yandex can be used to grab cheap taxi rides for shorter distances and make communicating across any language barriers much easier.
In Yerevan, there’s also an extremely cheap metro system.
Don't forget to like and subscribe!

Geghard Monastery - ARMENIA Travel Vlog 4 | December 2019
The Unusual Monastery surrounded by blissful nature. This video is little different from the normal happy travel videos. We tried to make it little mysterious type with the spooky music suiting such kind of an unique architecture and its atmosphere
This Monastery, carved out of the mountain, has unbelievable cross stones which date back centuries.
The whole site is well-preserved with the church, inside a cave, is very unique and certainly worth seeing.
The winding road which accesses the site provides great views of the countryside.
Certainly one of the destinations to go to in Armenia

'deep dungeon) is an Armenian monastery located in the mount Ararat plain in Armenia, near the closed border with Turkey, about 8 kilometres south of Artashat, Ararat Province, within the territory of ancient Artaxata. Khor Virap monastery was host to a theological seminary and was the residence of Armenian Catholicos.
Khor Virap's notability as a monastery and pilgrimage site is attributed to the fact that Gregory the Illuminator was initially imprisoned here for about 14 years by King Tiridates III of Armenia. Saint Gregory subsequently became the king's religious mentor, and they led the proselytizing activity in the country. In the year 301, Armenia was the first country in the world to be declared a Christian nation. A chapel was initially built in 642 at the site of Khor Virap monastery by Nerses III the Builder as a mark of veneration to Saint Gregory. Over the centuries, Khor Virap was repeatedly rebuilt. In 1662, the larger chapel known as the St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) was built around the ruins of the old chapel, the Khor Virap monastery, the refectory and the cells of the monks. Now, regular church services are held in this church. It is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Armenia.
The place of imprisonment virap nerk'in came to be known as the Virap or khor (deep), 'virap' meaning the Bottom most pit.
Khor Virap is located on a hillock in Pokr Vedi; the village is 4 kilometres from the main highway. Yerevan, the capital and largest city of Armenia, is 30 kilometres to the north. It is situated about 100 metres away from the closed Turkish - Armenian border (sealed by barbed wire fencing) and defended by Russian military establishments that guard the troubled border zone.
Khor Virap monastery is surrounded by green pasture lands and vineyards within the Ararat plain and is in view of Mount Ararat. The Arax (or Arakas) River flows close by, and the Khor Virap monastery is across from Aralık, Turkey.
King Artashes I, founder of the Artashesid dynasty, established his Armenian capital at Artashat (also known as Artaxtisata) around 180 BC. It is believed that Hannibal, the Carthaginian General who was persecuted by Rome, was also instrumental in establishing Artashat. Artashat remained the capital of the dynasty till the reign of King Khosrov III (330–339) when it was moved to Dvin. Subsequently, Artashat was destroyed by the Persian King Shapur II. Artashat is close to the hillock of Khor Virap. Until its chapel was built, Khor Virap was used as royal prison.
When King Tiridates III ruled over Armenia, his assistant was the Christian Grigor (Gregory) Lusavorich who preached the Christian religion. However, Tiridates, a follower of pagan religion, was not pleased with having an advisor with a different religion, and he subjected Gregory to severe torture. When news reached the king that Gregory's father Anak the Parthian was responsible for the murder of the king's father, the king ordered that Gregory's hands and legs be tied and that he be thrown into the Khor Virap to die in the dark dungeon located in Artashat. In addition, Gregory's refusal to offer sacrifice to the goddess Anahita provoked the king to torture him and condemn him to imprisonment in the Khor Virap. He was then forgotten and the King waged wars and persecution among Christian minorities. However, Gregory did not die during his 13 years of imprisonment. His survival was attributed to a Christian widow from the local town who, under the influence of strange dream vision, regularly fed Gregory by dropping a loaf of freshly baked bread into the pit.
During this period, the Roman Emperor Diocletian wanted to marry a beautiful girl, and sent agents to search for the most beautiful woman. They found a girl named Rhipsime in Rome, who was under the tutelage of Abbess Gayane in a Christian nunnery. When Rhipsime heard about the king's marriage proposal, she fled to Armenia to avoid the marriage. A search was launched to locate the girl and punish the people who had helped her escape, and eventually Tiridates located Rhipsime and forcibly brought her to his palace. After unsuccessfully trying to woo her, he ordered that she be dragged into his presence by putting a collar around her neck in hopes to persuade Rhipsime to agree to marry him.
However, what ensued was the persecution and murder of Rhipsime, Gaiane and many Christians. Tiridates went mad and is said to have behaved like a wild boar while torments fell on his household and demons possessed the people of the city...
