Filmed on Tuesday, May 30 2023, I drive around the village Vandalia, MI to see what's going on.

In 1848, Stephen Bogue and Charles P. Ball built a gristmill at the settlement which would eventually become Vandalia.

Theron J Wilcox was the colony's first postmaster and Ada Kinsbury is credited with being the area’s first merchant.

Tour of Small Town Petersburg, Illinois in 360° Video

Filmed on Monday, October 10th, 2022, I drive around the small town of Petersburg, Illinois. I drive through the town square and a few of the neighborhood streets.

Petersburg is a city in and the county seat of Menard County, Illinois, United States, on the bluffs and part of the floodplain overlooking the Sangamon River. It is part of the Springfield, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 2,260 at the 2010 census, and 2,226 at a 2018 estimate. Petersburg is located approximately two miles north of New Salem, the original settlement where Abraham Lincoln first settled, as he started his career.

The town began as a planned community organized by real estate speculators Peter Lukins (for whom the town is named) and George Warburton. Abraham Lincoln worked as the surveyor who first mapped, measured and help to divide lots on the land. Petersburg quickly grew, due to an advantageous placement on the river, becoming the county seat in the 1830s and eventually drawing off the population of New Salem, which was abandoned in 1840.

Many of the lush Victorian-era homes built by early wealthy inhabitants still stand on the bluffs of Petersburg. The town itself takes great pride in these structures, which has even preserved some of the original cobblestone streets to complement the classical architecture.

Local legend has it that town's name came about when Peter Lukins and George Warburton, two notorious sots, argued over what to call it. The matter was allegedly settled over a game of cards, which Lukins is credited as winning. Most versions of the tale claim that Warburton had it in mind to name the village Georgetown. This story, though often told in the area, has not been historically verified. #driving #travel #drivingtour

Vandalia, IL: Wandering Walks of Wonder Slow TV Walking Tour 4K

This is a great walk through one of the most historic places in Illinois – Vandalia. Vandalia served as the state capital of Illinois from 1819 until 1839, when the seat of state government moved to the current capital of Springfield. Vandalia was for years the western terminus of the National Road. Today, Vandalia is the county seat of Fayette County and the home of the Vandalia State House State Historic Site (1836).

Vandalia was founded in 1819 as a new capital city for Illinois. The previous capital, Kaskaskia, was unsuitable because it was under the constant threat of flooding. The townsite, located in Bond County at the time, was hastily prepared for the 1820 meeting of the Illinois General Assembly. In 1821, Fayette County was created, including Vandalia.

The history of the name Vandalia is uncertain. Different theories can be found in almost all of the books written about Vandalia over the years. In her book Vandalia: Wilderness Capital of Lincoln's Land, Mary Burtschi tells of a conversation between one of the original surveyors of the town and a Vandalia resident. The surveyor, Colonel Greenup, explained that Van was suggested by one of the men. He recommended this as an abbreviation to the word vanguard meaning the forefront of an advancing movement. Another suggestion was made for the term dalia, derived from the Anglo-Saxon word dale which means a valley between hills. Greenup takes credit in the conversation for connecting the two terms to form the name Vandalia.

The law under which Vandalia was founded included a provision that the capital would not be moved for twenty years. Even before the end of this period, the population center of the state had shifted far north of Vandalia. In 1837, the General Assembly voted to move the capital to Springfield.

On November 21, 1915, the Liberty Bell passed through Vandalia on its nationwide tour, while being returned to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco.

Driving Around Small Town Vandalia, Illinois in 4k Video

Filmed on Friday, June 16 2023, I drive around the village Vandalia, Illinois to see what's going on.

Vandalia was founded in 1819 and served as the state capital of Illinois from 1819 to 1839.

Abraham Lincoln assumed the first statewide office of his political career at Vandalia. He arrived in the capital city in late November 1834, and the freshman legislator took his seat on December 1, 1834, in the dilapidated second statehouse. He began his second term in December 1836 in the third capitol building that stands today, which is also where he made his first public speech against slavery in 1837.

The last session of the Illinois General Assembly to meet in the Vandalia Statehouse closed on March 4, 1839. In 1856, Vandalia sold its interest in the building for $3,150.

On August 5, 1918, the State of Illinois purchased the old statehouse and public square in order to ensure its preservation for future generations. Though owned by the state, the building continued to serve as the Fayette County Courthouse until 1933, when county offices moved to new quarters. In the 1930s and 1940s the State of Illinois carried out a major effort to restore the building to its Lincoln-era appearance.

As of the census of 2020, there were 7,458 people residing in the city.

This Sad Town Used To Be The Capital Of Illinois: Vandalia, IL 5K.

Vandalia, Illinois is rich in history, but it's hard to ignore the state that the town is in currently. The poverty rate in Vandalia is twice the national average rate, and the median household income is incredibly low, even when you compare it to some other nearby Illinois towns.

Tour in Vandalia, Illinois - My first vlog

Welcome to Vandalia, Illinois.

Be respectful there.

I hope to explore more places to record and maybe interview some people.

Please forgive my nonprofessional editing, lines, ETC. I wanted to work on this as soon as I could all on my mobile, but I didn't get enough time to say everything I wanted. I didn't know the some of the editing were weird until it was too late. There were some moments the frames drops because I was recording in 4K 60 on my phone.

This is something I want to try while I go to explore and show the community cool things if I can. Since it's my first time I am quite shy which I find it easier do the voice over.

I hope you all enjoy if you did, please like, subscribe and comment also click on the bell to get notified.
