VALLADOLID, YUCATAN MEXICO | Best Things To Do In Valladolid
Find the best things to do in Valladolid Mexico here. Valladolid is nestled in the eastern part of the Yucutan in Mexico. There are about 45,000 residents here, including the surrounding small communities. It’s also only 40 kilometers from Chichen Itza, one of the seven world wonders. Here are the best things to do in Valladolid from our perspective:
6: Visiting Cenote Suytun. This cenote has become a social media sensation in recent years because of its unique man-made platform that extends to the middle of the water. If it’s a sunny day, the light will shine through the cenote roof directly onto the platform. You can also visit Cenote Kaapeh right next to it. It’s included in the price of admission and definitely worth the visit as it has jungle vines and trees growing out of it.
5: The 5th best activity we did in Valladolid was Rio Lagartos. It took about an hour and a half to drive through the Yucatan jungle to the small fishing town and then we hopped on a boat tour once we got there. On the tour, we saw alligators, flamingos, pelicans, and even a small pink lake.
4. Exploring the city of Valladolid. This city blew our minds with how colorful it was! We took a free walking tour and learned about the Spanish and Mayan history of the city. It was also a great experience to visit the Convento de San Bernadino de Siena in the evening. The town puts on a light show every night, telling the story of the city and how it came to be.
3: Cenote Xkeken. This unique cave cenote had giant stalactites cascading from the roof as well as long vines that extended all the way into the water. It was a magical experience to swim amongst the vines and look up to the sunlight above. We also purchased a discounted ticket to Cenote Samula, which was within a 5 minute walk. It was worth it to see the one of the brightest blue cenotes we’ve seen so far in the Yucatan.
2. Visiting Chichen Itza. This world wonder was immaculately kept, especially the main pyramid of El Castillo. Standing at 98 feet tall, it stands alone in the center of the ruins and is extremely beautiful. The crowds were large due to its world wonder status, but we still had a great tour experience thanks to our knowledgeable guide who looped us into some fascinating Mayan history.
1. The best activity to do in Valladolid is visiting the ancient ruins of Ek Balam. We ranked this number one because of how much it surprised us. It felt much larger than Chichen Itza, had amazing rock art, and we were allowed to climb up the stairs on both of the major pyramids. Being able to touch and feel the structures brought us closer to understanding the true beauty and intricacy of the Mayan culture.

Top 5 Things to Do Around Cancun Mexico (Excursions Outside the Resorts)
Top 5 Things to Do Around Cancun Mexico shows you great excursions in the Yucatan Peninsula around Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum, and Merida. If you're looking for more than just beaches and resorts make sure to check out these top 5 Things to do around Cancun. First we start out in Chichen Itza, one of the seven wonders of the world. Next we head to Valladolid which is a great base to get a hotel and explore the surrounding areas. From here you can visit Chichen Itza, other ruins, and plenty of Cenotes. Our two favorite Cenotes being Cenote Suytun and Cenote Xcanahaltun. If you're up for a drive then head to the amazing town of Bacalar which we would argue is more beautiful than Cancun, Tulum, or Playa Del Carmen with out the touristy vibes. Here you can rent a boat on Lake Bacalar and travel to Los Rapidos. Last but not least we drove to the Archaeological Zone of Becán where we saw the most amazing Mayan Ruins. There are plenty of ruins closer to Cancun but we loved that you could climb up the pyramids here. Becan was completely empty and truly amazing to see!

CANCUN, MEXICO | 5 Must-Do Day Trips from Cancun
Cancun is considered to be the heart of the Mexican Caribbean. At this beautiful destination, you’ll find spectacular white-sand beaches, a turquoise sea, and a vibrant nightlife, which attracts millions of tourists every year. But unfortunately most tourists don’t venture out of the famed Hotel Zone. If you’re staying in Cancun and looking for unique activities to do, we highly recommend you head out of the town at least once during your trip! Cancun is the perfect location to explore nearby towns, Mayan ruins, and natural attractions from. In this video we highlight 5 must-do day trips from Cancun:
5. Río Lagartos & Las Coloradas
Located about 3.5 hours from Cancun, Río Lagartos and Las Coloradas make for a great day trip. Río Lagartos is basically a fishing village located along the Gulf Coast. It’s filled with wildlife and pristine nature. You can explore its protected biosphere by taking a boat tour where you will observe hundreds of flamingos, crocodiles, and pelicans. Right outside the biosphere, you can find the pink water lagoons called “Las Coloradas”. These pink lakes are formed by salt mines and make for stunning pictures.
☑️ Book tour:
4. Tulum
From the Tulum Ruins to the unique Kaan Luum lagoon, the Calavera Cenote and the Gran Cenote, you have plenty of options here. Tulum is a 2 hour drive away from Cancun and can be easily reached by local collectivo or the tourist ADO bus. Alternatively, you can also book a day tour to get here.
☑️ Book tour:
3. Bacalar
Famous for its immense deep-blue lake, Bacalar is located in the south of Quintana Roo, near the border of Belize. It takes about 4 hours to get here by tour bus, so ideally spend more than 1 day here if you can. However, it’s still doable to get there and then back to Cancun in a day if you get an early start. It’s best explored during a boat tour, so you can experience and swim in the different colors and cenotes in the lake.
☑️ Book tour:
2. Isla Mujeres
Only a 20 minute boat ride from Cancun, Isla Mujeres is the closest day trip recommendation on our list. The island is a beautiful, peaceful paradise known for its white-sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and the friendliest locals in the Mexican Caribbean. It’s also a popular scuba diving and snorkeling destination, with the impressive MUSA Underwater Museum of Art and the beautiful Manchones Reef near the shore.
☑️ Book tour:
1. Chichén Itzá
Our favorite day trip from Cancun is to Chichen Itza, one of the 7 World Wonders. This archeological site is located about 3 hours away from Cancun by tour bus. Chichen Itza was once a thriving community of Mayan people and boasts an interesting history that you can’t miss.

DON'T MISS THIS CHARMING TOWN IN THE YUCATAN! | Valladolid, Mexico
Come here before the tourist masses find out how amazing it is! lol Valladolid is definitely an underrated gem in the Yucatan peninsula and offers a variety of attractions in a much more peaceful than Cancun or Tulum. Valladolid is a small city of about 50,000 people with great local hotels, restaurants and an abundance of spectacular cenotes within biking distance. It's also a 40 minute drive from Chichen Itza so you can get a local bus or taxi to take you right when it opens before the droves of tourists from the big cities come in. I had an amazing time here and hope this video will be helpful to you if you're planning on visiting. xx

*I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.*

Best things to do in Valladolid Mexico (Cenotes, Restaurants and More!)
In this video I'll cover a number of my favorite activities to do when visiting Valladolid, Mexico. Along the way I'll cover a number of useful things to know before visiting. I recorded all of the footage shown in this video during my recent visit to Mexico.
Highlighted Locations:
1. Convent de San Bernardino de Siena
2. Parque Francisco Canton Rosado
3. Iglesia de San Servacio
4. Chichen Itza
5. Cenote Ik Kil
6. Cenote Suytun
7. Cenote Zaci
Restaurants I visited:
Los Frappes - Located across from the Convent, we were lucky enough to stumble upon this gem one night when returning to our AirBnB. We saw bright lights and heard loud music. Naturally, we ventured over to check it out. Jackpot! This place was an amazing good time - they had live music on the ROOF of their three story building with cheap cold beer. We didn't try the food so I can't opine - but if nothing else be sure to stop here for drinks and entertainment in the evening.
Restaurante El Atrio del Mayab - How can you not fall in love with this place. The food is amazing (Chorizo Eggs Benedict yeaaahh right!) but the ambiance is even better. Sit outside - you'll find a large fountain area that's home to a turtle and giant buddha statue. This is an excellent place for breakfast and is located along the main city square.
ConKafecito - Looking for a European style coffee shop? This cafe was located right by our AirBnB so it was really convenient for grabbing coffee when we were on the move.
Libranos del Mal - I've heard good things about the restaurant at Cenote Zaci, but we ended up eating here after our visit instead. They had killer salsa and the chicken burrito didn't disappoint. The vibe on the lower levels was something between a night club and sports bar, but they have a small seating area on the roof which is what I'd recommend shooting for. The food was great and the beer was cold. Definitely worth a visit if you're looking for something a little more off the run.
Mezcaleria Don Trejo - Sexy guacamole anyone? Any restaurant with a menu item called 'Sexy Guacamole', sidewalk seating and specialty tacos is going to be an instant hit with me. Mezcaleria Don Trejo definitely hits the mark and does all of these things well. Come here for tacos and a margarita after a day out adventuring through town!
San Giovanni Trattoria - Okay so to be clear I didn't come to Valladolid with the expectation that we'd be eating fancy Italian for dinner. HOWEVER, we heard about this place on at least three separate occasions between talking to our AirBnB host, expats and locals.

Exploring Valladolid, Mexico (Cenotes, restaurants and places to see)
After spending about a week in Bacalar, we decided we wanted to head in land to Valladolid, in the state of Yucatan, to see go explore the cenotes and try some great Yucatan food.
In this video, I wanted to check out on of the most popular cenotes in Mexico called cenote suytun, which I'm sure almost everyone has seen on the instagram feeds, to see if it's worth all the hype or is another instagram trap.
I will also be exploring the main square of Valladolid, that is so charming and honestly feels like you are somewhere in Europe. Also will be trying out some restaurants in the area before going to cenote Oxman, another really popular cenote.

Hey everyone! This week we're going to show you all the best things to do in Valladolid on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula!
Valladolid is a small city compared to its neighbours Merida and Cancun, but it is also centrally placed and therefore a great base to experience everything the Yucatan has to offer. It's smaller nature also makes it much more authentic in our opinion and it's easily our favorite place in this part of Mexico.
In this video we'll show you all the best things to do in and around the city, including some gorgeous cenotes and the World Wonder of Chichen Itza, as well as our travel tips and cost guides so you won't be surprised during your visit!

Valladolid, Mexico | Travel Guide 2021 | Things to eat, see, and do! | Calle De Los Frailes | Vlog
Travel Vlog #63 | Valladolid, Mexico
Welcome back to Valladolid, Mexico! We have another travel guide style vlog where we show you some of the best things to eat, see, and do in Valladolid! This city quickly became one of our favorites in Mexico because of the obvious culture, history, and food scene.
After visiting Cenote Zaci and one of the BEST restaurants we ate at in Mexico in the last video, we headed out into the city on a self-guided walking tour. This is one of the most walkable cities, and we actually didn't use any public transportation all day. We started our day out in our hotel eating our FREE breakfast! We really recommend Hotel Colonte Origin, everyone is extremely nice and accommodating, the rooms are beautiful, and you get an incredible free breakfast each morning.
After breakfast we headed out into the city to explore the park, the city market (Zaci), and the famous Calle de los Frailes, also known as 41A street! We loved how colorful and lively this area of the city is, and it reminded us a LOT of Burano in Italy. That's something we said a lot while we were in Valladolid - it reminds us a lot of walking through a European city with the architecture, walkability, and multitude of restaurants and shops. (There's even a Valladolid in Spain)
We spent a good amount of time in the Convent de San Bernardino enjoying how well preserved the convent was. There were so few people there, it felt like we had the place to ourselves! It was well worth the $2 to get in, and there is a lot of history that's well explained.
Right across from the convent is the most beautiful Mexico city sign we've seen yet! Each letter that makes up 'Valladolid' is intricately painted to depict a piece of the city and culture that's important to the people. We couldn't quit looking at it!
We stopped at Wabi Gelato to cool down, and this is a must-do dessert while in Valladolid! The gelato was perfectly made, and just contributed to our list of reasons why Valladolid reminds us so much of Europe.
We finally made our way to San Gervasio Cathedral in the heart of the city. The most interesting fact we learned about the cathedral: it doesn't point towards Rome like most of the places of worship in the Yucatan do.
We're ending this video with giving you one of our biggest money saving tips that's easy to overlook - never accept conversion rates at an ATM, and always use a real bank!
Thanks for watching, and make sure you subscribe to see what we do in Tulum!
