In this breathtaking walking tour of Valença, Portugal, we take a bird's eye view of the city with our drone camera. Explore the beautiful historic centre with its charming streets and impressive fortress, all while taking in the stunning views of the Minho River. The Valença Walking Tour is a must-see for anyone interested in the history and culture of this beautiful region.
Valença is a walled town located on the left bank of Minho River, approximately 25 km from the Atlantic Ocean.
The municipality is limited to the north with Minho River establishing the border with Spain, to south-southeast with the municipality of Paredes de Coura, to southwest with Vila Nova de Cerveira and to the east with Monção.
Linked to the wall rises the new quarter, where buildings such as social facilities, schools, the stadium and sports centre, the health care centre, the municipal market and the municipal swimming pools are located.
Concerning cuisine, Valença offers genuine delicacies such as Lampreia à Minhota (lamprey), Cabrito à Sanfins (kid), Bacalhau à São Teotónio (dried codfish) and Empanada (meat or fish pie).
The most interesting things to visit are mainly inside the fortress that looks down to the Minho River and Galicia. They have been destroyed several times whether it were the Barbarians, the Moors, the armies of Asturias and Leon or even the French troops in the 19th century, they have always been restored and still very well preserved.
Valença's fortress is a piece of gothic and baroque military architecture. The first walls were built in the 13th century. It was upgraded during the 17th and 18th century forming the present bulwarked system. It is placed on top of two small hills and it is formed by two polygons (the Recinto Magistral and the Coroada) separated by a ditch and with four doors (Coroada, Gaviarra, Fonte da Vila and Sol). The main entrance is Porta do Sol (Sun's door). This door was damaged during the Napoleonic invasions.

Valença is one of the interesting and attractive small Portuguese towns just at the border of Spain.
The most interesting things to visit are mainly inside the fortress that looks down to the Minho River and Spain.
Valença’s fortress is a piece of Gothic and baroque military architecture. The first walls were built in the 13th century.
It attracts a lot of visitors from Spain who come over to Portugal to shop for the wonderful Portuguese linen.
The city walls have been destroyed several times but they have always been restored and still very well preserved.
Along the north wall several old cannons very well maintained are positioned pointing to the river and Spain as if to remind everyone of their old purpose.
Sitting on the wall of the fortress, facing Spain is something special, looking over the town of Tui with the Cathedral of Tui as the highest point that is truly a beautiful view.
In 1879 Portugal and Spain agreed to construct a bi-functional (road and rail) bridge. The bridge was built inspired by Eiffel works. The bridge is still in use although a new bridge was built south of the older one
You can also get some nice traditional Portuguese food in the restaurants in the old town.

Camino Portugués DAY 10: Valença
After wandering inside the Fortaleza in Valença and eating good sausage for lunch, we've reached the boundary of Portugal and Spain, the Rio Minho. We will be crossing the iconic International Bridge to reach Tui, a historic Spanish city just across the river.
Day 10, Walking Valenca to Tui, Rest day.
Great evening in Valenca with new friends who have all moved on because I wanted to stay in Tui. Super Albergue, Hostal Bulwark. Great beds, free breakfast, best location.
Had a lovely walk across the bridge into Tui. Pretty old town, lots of cafes & my albergue is peaceful & cool. Got a single bed for 15€, rest are bunk beds. Breakfast for 3€ starts at 05:00. A pilgrim dream!

Valença do Minho - Implantada num local estratégico e envolvida pelas suas muralhas, foi sem dúvida uma das principais Praças forte do País, constituindo um dos Ex-Libris do território do Alto Minho. Fortificação desenvolvida durante a Guerra da Restauração (1640-68), e refeita durante o reinado de D.João V e após as invasões francesas de 1809.
