Porvoo is a city in the Uusimaa region of Finland, situated on the southern coast about 30 mi east of the city center of Helsinki. It was one of six medieval towns in Finland. Texts from the 14th century mention it as a city, though buildings stand from the 12th century and there is evidence humans have lived there since the stone age. Porvoo is the seat of the Swedish-speaking Diocese of Borgå (the Swedish name for Provo) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland.
Porvoo Old Town is a popular tourist destination, known for its well-preserved 18th- and 19th-century buildings, and the 15th-century Porvoo Cathedral. The Old Town and the Porvoonjoki River Valley are recognized as one of the National landscapes of Finland.
Porvoo was colonised by Swedes in the 13th and 14th centuries after the Second Crusade against Tavastians in 1249–1250. Around 1380, Porvoo became the third town in Finland to be granted official town rights, after Turku in 1229 and Ulvila in 1365. However, it is also claimed to have been founded as early as 1347, which would make it the second oldest after Turku. Due to land rise and loss of shipping access, Ulvila lost town rights to nearby Pori in 1558. The history of Swedish rule is still felt in the city and the municipality's official languages are Finnish and Swedish.
In 1760, roughly two-thirds of all buildings in Porvoo burned to the ground in a fire accidentally set by a housewife making fish soup. Her kitchen caught many of the other buildings on fire. During rebuilding, the city planning wasn't altered. Instead, new buildings were built upon the existing medieval foundations.
After the conquest of Finland by Russian armies in 1808, Sweden had to cede Finland to Russia in 1809. The Diet of Porvoo in 1809 was a landmark in the History of Finland. The Tsar Alexander I confirmed the new Finnish constitution (which was essentially the Swedish constitution from 1772), and made Finland an autonomous Grand Duchy. In 1917, a delegation sought complete independence from Russia and they went to ask Lenin for his blessing which they grudgingly received. Six years later, the former Diocese of Vyborg, which operated in Porvoo, was replaced by a current Swedish-speaking diocese.

Welcome to Finland Unveiled: Aerial Perspectives, an awe-inspiring journey through the stunning landscape of Finland from a bird's-eye view. In this video, Helsinki, Poroo and Turku are shown.
Helsinki, Finland’s southern capital, sits on a peninsula in the Gulf of Finland. Its central avenue, Mannerheimintie, is flanked by institutions including the National Museum, tracing Finnish history from the Stone Age to the present. Also on Mannerheimintie are the imposing Parliament House and Kiasma, a contemporary art museum. Ornate red-brick Uspenski Cathedral overlooks a harbor.

Visiting Hailuoto, July 2021, Finland [4K]
Visiting Hailuoto, July 2021, Finland. Walking takes place around the most western village of Marjaniemi known for its sand beaches, old fishing village and Marjaniemi Lighthouse.
Hailuoto is an island and a municipality in Northern Ostrobothnia region. The population of Hailuoto is 953 (March 31, 2021), which make it the smallest municipality in Northern Ostrobothnia and the former Oulu Province in terms of population. The municipality covers an area of 200.53 km2 (77.43 sq mi). Of all the Finnish islands in Finland's sea areas, Hailuoto is the third largest after Ahvenanmaa/Åland and Kemiönsaari/Kimitoön. Land in the region is constantly rising due to post-glacial rebound.
The permanent settlement of Hailuoto apparently began in the 12th century. Residents came from many directions, especially from Karelia. The island has a rough history: During the Great Famine of 1695–1697, 88 inhabitants of Hailuoto died. During the Great Northern War (1713–1721), 200 Cossacks of the Tsardom of Russia killed about 800 people in Hailuoto with an ax on September 29, 1714. Many of the victims had sought protection on the island, as Hailuoto had a population of less than 300 at that time. The bloodshed done overnight was the greatest of the Great Northern War.

Good morning dear scene walker. ☕
The sun is shining and it's nice to have you here.
We are walking towards raging rapids and a dam waterfall in Helsinki's Old Town (Vanhakaupunki).
Also nearby are the Museum of technology and the hydropower plant.
The river to our right is the Vantaanjoki (River Vantaa).
From here the river flows into the Gulf of Finland.
It is the same river that flows through the rapids in Myllykoski.
I'll link a video of it in the top right corner of your screen and the description below.
MYLLYKOSKI:
The Vantaa river has a total length of 101 km and starts from the lake Erkylänjärvi.
Helsinki uses water from this river as its backup water supply.
The Old Town rapids are 200 meters long and the drop is 6 meters.
Let's go back in time to the year 1550 when a town was founded near the rapids called Helsinge fors (Swedish for 'Helsinge rapids').
Founded by the Swedish king Gustav Vaasa, the city gradually gew around the rapids.
Residents from the cities of Rauma, Ekenäs, Ulvila and Porvoo were forced to live in the newly founded city (Helsinki).
If they refused, trade would no longer be allowed.
It was to compete with Talinn for trade in the Gulf of Finland.
In the 1640s Helsinki was moved to 'Vironniemi' for better port conditions to improve the economy.
Interesting fact: before the introduction of refrigeration equipment, ice was also needed in summer for various purposes.
In the winter, large ice cubes were lifted from the Vantaa river by horsepower and stored in a warehouse covered with sawdust during the summer heat and then delivered to the shops.
Located next to the rapids, the Museum of Technology was founded in 1969, but the buildings date back to 1876.
As the population of Helsinki grew, the importance of hygiene became important in the late 1800s.
Before the water plant, the inhabitants of Helsinki obtained drinking water from wells.
And so, in 1876, the first hydroelectric power station was established to pump clean water to the center of Helsinki.
The rapids or the 'concrete fish ladder', completed in 1986, was demolished in 1998, but restored to its natural state in 1999.
During the summer, when water levels are lower a snake-like movement of the water can be seen.
This allows fish such as rainbow trout to move up and down effortlessly.
Also notice the seated fisherman.
Today, the hydroelectric power station produces electricity for households and the Museum of Technology can be visited.
The area around the rapids has become a popular spot for both fishing and nature lovers.
Thank you for joining, have a nice day and hope to see you again in the next scene 👋.
Together we learn, explore and walk through the scenes. 🚶🏻

Vanha Porvoo kuuluu Suomen valokuvatuimpiin kansallismaisemiin. Idyllisen kaupungin tunnelmaa saapuu ihastelemaan matkailijoita ympäri maailmaa. Porvoon jokirannan punaiset makasiinit, värikkäät puutalot sekä kapeat mukulakivikadut kahviloineen ja putiikkeineen rauhoittavat matkaajan mieltä. Koe pienten kujien mielenkiintoiset ja jännittävät museot ja putiikit.
Porvoon museorautatiellä lättähattu junat liikennöivät edelleen, josta kiitos kuuluu uudistuneelle aktiiviselle Porvoon museorautatie ry. yhdistykselle. Mielenkiintoista nähtävää ja koettavaa kyllä riittää koko perheelle.
✅ Porvoon historia alkaa kirjoitettuna Porvoonjoen suiston vanhasta kauppapaikasta vuodesta 1351, jolloin Porvoon pitäjä mainitaan historiallisissa lähteissä ensimmäisen kerran.
Kaupunkina Porvoo mainitaan ensi kertaa vuonna 1387.
Ensimmäinen tieto Porvoonjoen ylittävästä sillasta on vuodelta 1421. Porvoo joutui luopumaan kaupunkioikeuksista pariinkin otteeseen, kun Ruotsi halusi 1500-luvulla eri syistä siirtää asutusta Santahaminaan ja nykyisen Helsingin
seudulle.
Kaupunki paloi vuonna 1760. Venäjän vallattua Suomen keisari Aleksanteri I järjesti Porvoon valtiopäivät, mistä voi katsoa Suomen valtion saaneen alkunsa. Rautatie tuli kaupunkiin 1870-luvulla, ja Suomen itsenäistyttyä on suomenkielisen väestön osuus noussut kaupungissa huomattavasti.

Porvoo is mentioned as a town for the first time in 1387. In the earliest times, the present-day Askola, Pornainen and Pukkila were also included in its holdings.
✅ Swedish settlement is known to have arrived in the area in the 13th century, when the crown favored farmers moving to Uusimaa.
In the Middle Ages, six cities were founded in Finland, the first of which, after Turku, were Porvoo and Ulvila, which, however, later lost its city rights for a long time. Porvoo got its name from the Swedish name Borgå (borg = castle, å = river) of the Iso Linnanmäki fortress located near Porvoonjoki. The first information about the bridge crossing the Porvoonjoki dates back to 1421.
