10 best sights around Morecambe Bay

Having written a travel guide to the coast of Cumbria and the Lake District, I thought I'd share some favourite places around Morecambe Bay.

This includes places in Lancaster, Arnside and Ulverston, including some that I found surprising when researching the book.

If you are interested to find out more, you can find the blog post I mention in the video here:

The book is called 'The Cumbria and Lake District Coast' and is available from all good bookstores. It is also available directly from the publisher:

The music is 'Into the Mountains' by Alex Ora/Epidemic Sound

Ulverston: The Perfect Cumbrian Town. A Short Tour of this Vibrant South Lakeland Destination

Experience the independent spirit of this unique little market town in South Lakeland, Cumbria.

Ulverston is a rewarding tourist destination and an even better place to live, boasting a thriving cultural scene and an enviable setting between the glistening expanse of Morecambe Bay and the drama of the Lake District fells. Is there a more perfect town in the whole of Cumbria (or am I just biased as it's my local town)?!

A big thank you to Lauren at Bluebell & Ivy and Rosie at Gallery 68 for generously agreeing to appear in the film.

Morecambe Bay - Places to visit, history and wildlife

Morecambe Bay is the largest intertidal area in the UK and is famed for its wildlife. However, there are many other fascinating sights to see. This short video shows highlights from around the bay based on my book ''The Cumbria and Lake District Coast'.

More about the book

In addition to tourist destinations such as castles, museums and and seaside resorts, the book describes the history and wildlife of the coast from Fleetwood to the Mull of Galloway. This includes the development of ports such as Barrow-in-Furness, Lancaster, Ulverston and Workington and the main RSPB and Cumbria Wildlife Trust nature reserves around the coast.

There are also tips on watching the waterbirds for which Morecambe Bay and the Solway Firth are famed and on where to see seals and tidal bores such as the Arnside Bore. The book is a must-read for travellers and local residents alike.

Discover a host of secret seaside haunts along a coastline that stretches from Morecambe Bay to the Solway Firth.... Coast Magazine, Book of the Month, January 2022

A rich guide to the coastal fringes of the region, Kevin’s new book goes beyond a survey to get into the detail of these unique places… Startling photographs and clear images make this a brilliant companion. Cumbria Life Magazine

Ulverston Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Cumbria (although historically in Lancashire), and around 50 miles south, and slightly west, of Carlisle, is the town of Ulverston.

The name 'Ulverston' is derived from an old Norse family name Úlfarr meaning ‘wolf warrior’ and tun meaning ‘farm’ or ‘homestead’. It is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Ulvrestun'. A market charter was granted to the town in 1280 by Edward I.

In 1537 Furness Abbey, near the neighbouring town of Dalton-in-Furness to the east, was destroyed during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. Following this, Ulverston became the administrative centre of the Furness region. It would benefit from its location on the main trade route linking Furness to the Cartmel peninsula across Cartmel Sands.

In 1795 architect John Rennie, who would later become known for designing Waterloo Bridge in London, constructed the Ulverston Canal. This connected the town with the Irish Sea and provided it with a port. Further to this, Ulverston became the starting point for steamers to Liverpool, passenger ships to Scotland and London and for cargoes exporting copper slates and linen around the world. Consequently, the population of Ulverston doubled between 1801 and 1841.

In 1846, following the discovery of significant deposits of iron ore in Barrow-in-Furness to the west, the Furness Railway opened, and by 1854 it had reached Ulverston. This was a precursor to the town's present railway station which opened in 1857. It is situated on the Furness Line running between Lancester and Barrow-in-Furness. The arrival of the railway would render the Ulverston Canal obsolete. It was still used commercially up until the First World War, but was officially abandoned at the end of the Second World War.

In 1974 the historical counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, along with the Furness Peninsula of Lancashire, merged to form the ceremonial county of Cumbria. Since then, Ulverston has been part of the South Lakeland district of Cumbria.

Today Ulverston is a popular base for visitors wishing to explore not only the Lake District to the immediate north, but the town itself which retains much of its old architecture with very few modern buildings blighting the views. As can be seen at the end of the walk, it is the starting point of the Cumbria Way. This is a public footpath around 70 miles long leading all the way to Carlisle, taking in some mountain and lakeside scenery along the way via the Lake District.

In 1890 Stan Laurel was born in Ulverston. After moving to America, he teamed up with Oliver Hardy in the 1920s to form arguably the most famous comedy double act of all time - Laurel and Hardy. A number of homages to the duo can be seen around Ulverston including a statue outside Coronation Hall and a museum on Brogden Street.

Places to see in ( Ulverston - UK )

Ulverston is a market town in the South Lakeland district of Cumbria in North West England. Historically in Lancashire, the town is in the Furness area 8 miles north-east of Barrow-in-Furness. Ulverston is close to the Lake District, and just north of Morecambe Bay, neighboured by Swarthmoor, Pennington and Rosside.

Ulverston's most visible landmark is Hoad Monument, a concrete structure built in 1850 to commemorate statesman and local resident Sir John Barrow. The monument provides views of the surrounding area, including Morecambe Bay and parts of the Lake District. Ulverston Canal, no longer navigable, was once a vital component of the town's economy and is still celebrated with an art installation.

Ulverston is a comparatively large civil parish. It is bounded in the east by the Leven estuary, Crake, Coniston Water and Yewdale Beck. To the west the boundary follows a chain of hills, and beyond that lie the towns of Kirkby-in-Furness and Askam and Ireleth. To the south is relatively low land, which rises quickly. In the north are hills such as Coniston Old Man. The settlements of the parish are mainly concentrated in the eastern part.

Ulverston railway station, which serves the town, is located on the Furness Line from Barrow-in-Furness to Lancaster, ultimately leading on to Manchester Airport. The railway station is a short walk from the town centre. The town is also served by several bus services. These include the X6, running to Kendal from Barrow-in-Furness, via Grange over Sands. The X 12 runs from Coniston and passes through the village of Spark Bridge. Other services include the X 31 to Tarn Hows and the 6A and 6 to Barrow-in-Furness, the largest town in the region.

Ulverston calls itself a 'festival town' in reference to the many and varied festivals which take place in Ulverston over the course of the year. The most renowned of these is the Lantern Festival, which involves hundreds of local residents creating lanterns out of willow and tissue paper and parading them throughout the town in winding rivers of light. The annual event culminates in a lively display of theatrical performance and fireworks in Ford Park, and was organised entirely by the community themselves for the first time in 2008.

Other popular festivals include:

Flag Festival
Dickensian Festival
Beer Festival
Charter Festival
International Music Festival
Furness Tradition
Comedy Festival
Word Market—including 'Pub Scripts'
Walking Festival
Spring Buddhist Festival
Print Fest
Summer Buddhist Festival
Ulverston Carnival Parade
Furness Festival of Tradition
Summer Music Festival
Festival of Fashion
