Welcome to our video on the top things to do in Xinjiang, China. Xinjiang is a vast region in northwest China, known for its diverse landscapes, rich Silk Road history, and vibrant ethnic cultures. Here are some of the best places to visit and activities to enjoy in Xinjiang.
Start with a visit to Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang. Explore the Xinjiang Regional Museum, which houses ancient artifacts, including mummies from the Silk Road era, traditional clothing, and cultural relics of the region’s many ethnic groups, including the Uyghurs and Kazakhs.
Next, head to Turpan, an ancient oasis town along the Silk Road. Visit the Jiaohe Ancient City, a well-preserved ruin that was once a major Silk Road trading post. Don’t miss the Karez Irrigation System, an ancient underground water system that has sustained the region’s agriculture for centuries. Nearby, explore the Flaming Mountains, famous for their red glow at sunset.
One of the must-see natural wonders in Xinjiang is Tianchi (Heavenly Lake), located near Urumqi in the Tianshan Mountains. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and dense forests, the lake offers breathtaking scenery. You can hike around the lake, take a boat ride, or simply relax and enjoy the view.

The ancient city of Jiaohe, which lies about ten kilometers west of the small town of Turpan in Xinjiang, is one of the most visually spectacular ruins of the old Silk Road. More than 1,500 years of history sits atop this 30-meter high plateau and because of this it has become one of Xinjiang’s most interesting archeological sites – certainly one that’s worth your time to visit.
The entire city ruins run 1,700 meters in length and 300 meters at the widest point. During its peak it was home to about 5,000 residents and boasted a “main street”, several monasteries, and government offices. It’s incredibly well-preserved considering its age, as you can see in the video here.

Turpan Eremophyte Botanical Garden is located about 10 kilometers south of Turpan City, at an altitude of -95 m to -76 m. The park has a large area of wind-eroded Yardan landforms. The maximum temperature is 47.6℃, the minimum temperature is -28℃, and the maximum temperature of the sand surface in summer is over 80℃.
The average annual precipitation is 16.4 mm and the annual evaporation is 2837.8 mm. The annual average number of windy days above grade 8 is as many as 26, and the maximum wind speed exceeds 40 meters per second, ranking first in China in terms of wind and sand flow speed. The park is known as the fire island, wind bank.
After nearly 30 years of effort, the Eremophyte Botanical Garden today covers an area of more than 300,000 square meters and contains more than 500 species of desert plants, including 43 species of rare and endangered plants. There is a dessert poplar forest. Every year in April in most areas of Xinjiang is still frozen, but the park has been blooming flowers. The garden is the ideal place for tourists in Xinjiang to enjoy the flowers in spring, but also outside visitors to study science and having sightseeing.
