Exploring Route 66 in New Mexico | Tucumcari, Blue Hole and MORE!
We explored Route 66 in New Mexico on multiple days of our EPIC 3 WEEK ADVENTURE! There were so many stops and we tried to see as many as we could with the time we had. Here are all the stops we explored on this portion of the route!
Our first stop was the Blue Swallow Motel which is original to the route. Located in Tucumcari and originally called the Blue Swallow Court when it first opened in 1940, the Blue Swallow Motel takes you back to simpler times during the heyday of the Mother Road. It has gone through several restorations over the years with several different owners all with the goal to preserve and protect this historic place. You can book a room at this motel but be sure to book well in advance as it sells out often.
Continuing on in Tucumcari, our next stop was the Historic Route 66 Esso Station just down the road from the Blue Swallow Motel. The gas station is closed now but still neat to see. There are also some other old signs original to the route still visible in this location. Unfortunately, most of these spots are run down now.
Our final stop in Tucumcari was the New Mexico Route 66 Museum. This museum features a large Route 66 monument out front as well as old relics from this area of Route 66 such as old cars and photos. It was closed when we arrived so be sure to check the hours prior to your visit. Admission is $5 per person.
Next, we headed to Grants where there is a GIANT drive-thru Neon Route 66 sign. It is a great spot for photos. Next to the sign, there is a small park and mining museum you can check out as well.
Our last stop in New Mexico before crossing over into Arizona was the Historic El Rancho Hotel in Gallup. Built in 1936, this hotel is original to Route 66 and hosted several famous people over the years with an important role in the movie industry. Aside from its famous guests, it also served many Americans traveling west on the Mother Road in hopes of finding a better life.
To explore more stops along Route 66, we continued our journey three weeks later starting with Dead Man's Curve. This original portion of Route 66 in New Laguna, features a 180 degree curve that was dangerous for drivers back in the day. Several accidents have occurred in the past in this area which is how this portion of the route got its name.
About 1 mile past Dead Man's Curve is a giant rock on the side of the road that looks like an owls face when you look at it from a certain angle. Let us know if you can see it in the comments!
Next, we stopped at the Rio Puerco Bridge which is an original bridge to Route 66. Located in Albuquerque, this bridge was built in 1933 and has gone through several restoration projects to preserve its history. You will see it right next to the west bound lanes of interstate 40 and you can still stop by and check it out. You can no longer drive on it, though.
Our last stop for our trip in this state was the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa. The Blue Hole is a popular stop for swimmers and divers and features crystal clear water, a constant temperature of 61 degrees and a depth of 81 feet. They also have a rock at the top you can jump off into the water. We weren't prepared to swim but let us know in the comments if you have taken a plunge into the Blue Hole!
☕️ Do you have any guess on how many cups of coffee Megan has on this entire 3 week adventure?! Let us know in the comments! Here’s a hint, it’s a LOT!!

ABOUT US
We are Jed and Sandy Hall, the creators of Wanderful Revolution. Jed was born in a small town on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and Sandy was born and raised in Maryland. We met in Washington State, while serving our country in the United States Navy. After separating from military service, we both went back to school and became nurses, which ultimately led to us selling our home in 2015 and hitting the road as travel nurses working in Emergency Departments throughout the USA.
During our travels, we lived in an Airstream travel trailer and made it our goal to become debt free. At the beginning of 2020, we paid off the last of our debts and quit our jobs so we could follow our long time dream of traveling the world. Of course, COVID-19 brought us to a screeching halt. So, we decided to build out a 2019 Mercedes Sprinter van, which we plan to drive on one of the longest road trips in the world: the Pan-American highway from Alaska to the tip Argentina (and possibly beyond).
We are excited and very fortunate to be able to live this amazing lifestyle! So, we want to share it with you! Join us to check out some amazing places, go on exciting adventures, eat delicious food, and perhaps learn some tips and tricks about living full-time in a van. We hope you will join us on our Wanderful Revolution! We will see you out there and we hope we inspire you to STAY WANDERFUL!!
