The year was 2007/2008. If you are wondering what Things to do in Bhutan? This is one of the best Places to visit in Thimphu. In the heart of downtown area in Thimphu Bhutan there is an intersection of roads where a traffic policeman sits in a booth and guides traffic. This has now become a tourist attraction.
The hand actions of the traffic policeman was so graceful yet commanding, guiding traffic with their fluid, butterfly-like hand movements. I just had to take lots of photos and videos of them. To see more photos and read about my Bhutan Travels, go to my blog here -

भूटान की राजधानी थिम्पु शहर की संपूर्ण दृश्य Thimphu City Complete Sightseeing Full Video
Thimphu is the capital city of the royal kingdom of Bhutan. The distance between Phuentsholing and Thimphu is about 175 kms which takes about 6 hours in bus. We stayed 3 days in Thimphu and visited all interesting places. This video shows all important places in and around Thimphu.
Tashi Cho Dzong is the most respectful Dzong in Thimphu. The king of Bhutan sits in this dzong. Besides this is also used for various high level ministerial offices. Interestingly tourists are also allowed to visit this place, but only after the working hours, i.e., between 4.30 to 5.30 PM. Hence this is considered as one of the most important tourist attractions. We had to go through a thorough security checking and produce our Permits/documents before entering the Dzong. But the best thing is that they allowed our cameras to take inside and take pictures of the dzong (except inside the Lahkhang). There is no ticket or entry fee to visit this dzong.
The National Memorial Chorten is the most popular tourist attraction of Thimphu. It is very easily accessible as it is located about one km from Thimphu bus stand. This is a Tibetan style stupa constructed in 1974 in the memory of Bhutan's king Late His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. You can see many people, both locals and outsiders, walking around the chorten as a religious practice. Apart from the chorten there is also a small Buddha temple at the back side. Besides there are some large prayer wheels at the left side of the entrance. This chorten is a marvelous example of Buddhist architecture and a must visit for anybody going to Thimphu.
The Coronation Park is located on the banks of the river Wang chu in Thiphu city. This is the biggest park in the city spread over 6 acres of land. There is no ticket or entry fee to visit this park. There is a big statue of Sakyamuni Buddha in the park. This is a pleasant and relaxing environment and you can get good views of the city as well as of the Himalayan mountains. The views of river wang chu is enjoyable which flows by the side of coronation park.
Dechen Phodrang Lakhang is one of the oldest and most sacred monasteries of Thimphu. We had to walk for about 4 kms from Norzim lam to reach here. This is located on a ridge about 200 mtrs high from Thimphu valey. From this hight you can get nice views of Thimphu city, Wang chu river, Tashicho dzong, Buddha point etc. There are three main attractions here, (i) the chorten in the front, (ii) the large prayer wheels and (iii) the main lakhang (temple). We went inside the lakhang and felt the spiritual bliss of the environment. There is a separate hall at the side for burning thousands of butter candles. A large number of buddhist monks stay near the lakhang for religious studies and practice.
The Tangtong Dewachen Dupthop Nunnery in located in the Zilukha area of Thimphu. This is often called as Zilukha nunnery in short. There is a beautiful lakhang inside the nunnery and a beautiful statue of Drupthop Thangtong Gyalpo also known as the Great Chagzopa. This is because the nunnery was built by a saint called Rickey Jadrel, who is believed to be 16th emanation of Drupthop Thangtong gyalpo himself. The pillar in front of the main building depicts teachings of Buddha, First Sermon in Deer park, which is represented by the 2 deer looking at the Auspicious wheel. The Wheel is a representation of teachings of Buddha..
Changankha Lakhang is a very old (15th century) monastry and considered to be very important from religious point of view. Bhutanese people must wear their traditional dress in order to enter the Lakhang. However Indians (and other foreigners) are allowed to enter with pants and shirts. We went inside and saw the beautiful buddha inside the lakhang. We were also very lucky to see the prayer of the monks. The atmosphere inside the lakhang was extremely spiritual and cannot be expressed in words.
Kuensel Phodrang (or Buddha dordenma or Buddha Point) is the recent most attraction of Thimphu. It is located on a hill about 8 kms from Thimphu. There is a 52 meters tall bronze statue of Lord Buddha. The statue is so big that it is visible from almost everywhere in the city. There are 125000 small buddha statues are placed inside buddha dordenma. The throne on which Buddha sits is a large meditation hall. As the place is located at a height we could see the beautiful views of Thimphu city and magnificent views of Himalayan mountains around the place. We also saw Kuensel Phodrang Nature Park which is very close to the place of Buddha statue.
BEYOND THE BHUTAN GATE - A Road Trip Across The Phuentsholing city || Phone Film ||
** The day we reached Phuentsholing city it was raining heavily. Although my phone got completely wet I had tried to capture as much as I could.**
It truly defines why Bhutan is called the world’s last ‘Shangri-La’.
From Siliguri it was nearly about 5 hours and 25 minute’s road journey while we reached at the entry point of Bhutan “The Bhtan Gate”. This was my first travel to any hill station or can also be said to any international hillstation too. So my joys knew no bound. We decided to enter the city walking and after entering to the city we took a local cab to explore the local destinations.
Phunetsholing clearly seperates and share two very different people and culture. As the majority of goods traded go into Bhutan through Phuntsholing, the town is the gateway to Bhutan for trade with India.
** BOTH INDIAN & BHUTANESE CURRENCY IS ACCEPTED IN PHUENTSHOLING CITY **
The name of the cab driver was Janhoy and he is such a nice guy. As I was sitting at the front seat, we started a conversation and he told me so much about Bhutan.
THE PLACES WE VISITED :
Karbandi Monastery, or as locals call it, Karbandi Gompa, is located at a height of 400 metres. Founded in 1967, it’s the winter residence of the Royal Grandmother, Ashi Phuntsho Choedron. The temple compound houses, impressive, large statues of Shabdrung Ngawang, Guru Rinpoche and Shakyamuni Buddha. The plush garden located right outside the monastery gives a panoramic view of the Bengal Plain and the Phuentsholing town. Being monsoon season I witnessed something for the first time that would be of approaching rain clouds. Eight different Tibetan Buddhist Stupas can be seen enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the garden.
In the heart of Phuentsholing city we found another monastery where monks carryout ceremonies with pounding drums, low tones chantings and blaring trumpets. The atmosphere exudes a potent scence of stillness even among the sparkling display of movement and colour.
We were able to spend only 5 hours at Phuentsholing so I hope to visit the country again someday for a longer period .

Bhutan Takin Preserve in Motithang
Takin is the national animal of Bhutan. However, their population is very less. Hence the Govt. of Bhutan has made a zoo on top of the mountains on Motithang area to protect these endangered animals. We took a walk of about 3 kms from Zilukha nunnery to reach this place. On the way we met Tenzin and Tenzin, students of Institute of Natural Medicines, who also accompanied us to visit the zoo. We first saw some deers in the zoo. The number of Takins were very less. We had to walk a lot in order to search the Takins inside the zoo. We had never seen Taakins ealier. A takin looks someting in between a cow and a goat. Visiting the zoo was interesting as we could see the national animal of Bhutan.

Tiger's Nest visit with the worst Bhutanese Tour Guide who abandoned the solo traveller ! - part 1
The Bhutan Travel Inc of Thimphu, Bhutan provided a little-voiced tour guide who not only completely abandoned me from day 2 onwards, and NEVER greeted nor introduce ANYTHING to me about the places we visited ! What a tour guide ! His name is Dangsa Kota of license# 1462. He might as well be another tourist but I paid $250+$40 surcharge per day for solo travelling and this is the Bhutan's welcoming tour guide I got !?
This trip to Bhutan was NOT worth the money I paid AT ALL and I felt cheated and mistreated by not only the tour guide but also the tour operator The Bhutan Travel Inc who should have known that Jan 12, 2013 is the New Year's day and NOTHING was open to tourists, and I was only informed of such the night before by this so-called experienced Tour Guide Dangsa Kota while he skipped my customized itinerary of visiting the museum, the national library, the astrologer's temple/school and traditional hospital in the morning of Jan 11th so he rushed me to Panaka and Madman's temple so that he could get his paid-for lunch at the Kimi cafeteria near the temple instead of looking out for MY interests, knowing fully that next day, Jan 12, the museum, library and astrologer's school would all be closed to tourists !!
Thangtong Dewachen Dupthop Nunnery (Zilukha Nunnery)
At the left side of the nunnery there is one big hall with thousands of butter candles. There are many small prayer wheels all around the lakhang and as usual we enjoyed rotating the prayer wheels. The nuns are very nice and allowed us to take photographs inside. The nuns are usually busy in prayers, organizing pooja items in lakhang and doing other spiritual activities.
A Dozen to Land of the Thunder Dragon
On the way back from Paro to Phuentsholing, we came across a number of bikers on their way to the land of the Thunder Dragon. Let's see if you can identify all the bikes seen in the video!
