10 Amazing Places You Must Visit in Trieste - Best Things To Do In Trieste - Trieste Italy

Learn more at

Have you ever been to Trieste? You’ve heard of it, but would you like to know more?

Trieste is a small town, in the north-east of Italy, and it perfectly links the Italian peninsula with Slovenia, Austria and Croatia. Merging these wonderful territories, the result is a city rich in contrasts, cultures and different traditions: the Italian one, the Slovenian, the Austrian and so many more.

Trieste has been the land of passage for many well-known personalities, including the Irish writer James Joyce who was so struck by the city that he affirmed: My soul is in Trieste.

We are taking you to discover the 10 things you can't help but do in Trieste:

00:00 Introduction
00:18 - 10. Unity of Italy Square.
Having a real Italian breakfast is something you can do wherever you want in Italy: but how about having your breakfast in front of the sea? Unity of Italy Square, called “Big Square” before the Italian conquer, is the largest square facing the sea in Europe: with its smell of the sea, its liberty building and the multicultural environment, it creates the perfect atmosphere to make you feel more a part of the city and less of a tourist.

02:04 - 9. Cittàvecchia.
The historic centre of Trieste, called “Cavana”, it’s the very core of the city. If you visit Trieste, you must take a walk inside the labyrinth of its narrow streets: you can have a coffee, buy amazing Italian food or have lunch in its small squares.

02:55 - 8. Remembrance Park and Public Garden.
They represent the two main green lungs of Trieste. The first, located on the San Giusto hill, adjacent to the Castle, is the perfect place for jogging, or walking among the trees. The second is ideal if you want to enjoy some free time away from the bustle of the city, have a nice picnic or take children to play football.

3:50 - 7. La Pirona Cafè.
This wonderful patisserie is the very location in which the Irish writer James Joyce started to composed his masterpiece, Ulysses.Their cakes and Italian desserts paired with a good coffee can make every day better.

4:40 - 6. San Giusto Castle and Cathedral.
One of the most representative symbols of the city, the Castle of San Giusto stands on the hill of the same name that dominates the city, its gulf and its hinterland. Wanted by the emperors of Austria, it was built between 1468 and 1636. Beside the Castle, we find the Cathedral, a Catholic church built between 1302 and 1320. Both the Castle and the Cathedral were named after Giusto, a martyr who refused to deny his faith. For this reason, he was sentenced to death. The soldiers tied his hands and feet with a rope, to which lead weights were secured, then he was thrown into the water. Thanks to the lead weights, the body would no longer emerge. But, before sunset, Giusto's body was miraculously carried to the shore by the current.

8:07 - 5. Audace Pier.
The pier was built between 1743 and 1751 on the wreck of the San Carlo, a ship sunk in the port. In 1922, in honour of the first ship of the Italian Navy to arrive in Trieste, the pier was renamed Molo Audace. At one time passenger and merchant ships docked at the San Carlo pier, given the fervent trade of the city of Trieste: now the sailboats dock for the famous Barcolana, a regatta that takes place in October, which attracts thousands of tourists every year.

9:10 - 4. Vittoria Lighthouse.
This is the active lighthouse in Trieste: also, it’s a commemorative monument dedicated to the fallen of the first world war, as the inscription says: SHINE AND REMIND OF THE FALLEN ON SEA MCMXV-MCMXVIII.
Fun fact: the statue of the Winged Victory raises a torch with her left hand, while with her right she holds a laurel column. Rumour has it that during those days when the Bora blows in Trieste, her wings seems to move a little.

9:40 - 3. Napoleonic Road.
This trail is perfect for all ages: it is very easy to access and the view is something you can’t miss.

10:45 - 2. Barcola Pinewood.
Take a walk, ride a bike near the sea or sunbathe: these are just few activities you can do in Barcola.

11:35 - 1. Miramare Castle.
The Castle was the residence of Maximilian, Emperor of the Austro-Ungarian Empire, and his wife Carlotta. Unfortunately, their story didn’t end well.

Information from Wikipedia on Top 10 Tourist Sites
#1 - Sant' Antonio Taumaturgo
The church of Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo (commonly called the church of Sant'Antonio Nuovo ), is the main religious building of the Borgo Teresiano and of the center of Trieste [1] .
The project of the church dates back to 1808 , but work began only in 1825 . The facade of the building is characterized by six Ionic columns . Still on the main façade, in the attic, there are six statues sculpted by Francesco Bosa in 1842 , depicting Saint Giusto , Saint Sergius , Saint Servolo , Saint Mauro, Saint Eufemia and Saint Tecla. The church is located in the square of the same name, near the Canale Grande .

#2 Temple of Holy Trinity
The Orthodox community in Trieste was established in 1748 but it wasn't until 1751 when Empress Maria Theresa allowed free practice of religion for Orthodox Christians, this prompted immigration of Serbian traders from Herceg Novi, Trebinje and Sarajevo to Trieste.[1] In 1781, the community split into two. The first was Greek community and second, from which there is today's Serbian parish, was the community which embraced the Orthodox South Slavic nations.[1] From 1994[2] up to administrative changes within the dioceses of the Serbian Orthodox Church, the parish in Trieste fell within the Metropolitanate of Zagreb and Ljubljana. Since 2011, it is under the jurisdiction of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Austria and Switzerland.
Emilio Bisi produced sculptures for the facade.

From
#3 Della Borsa Square
Piazza della Borsa is one of the main squares of Trieste. Also known as the second city square parlor has been the economic centre of the city throughout the 19th century.
Its present name derives from an obvious name due to the mansion built in 1806 by architect Antonio maceratese Mollari to accommodate the activities of stock traders. This building, which distinguishes the square which is one of the most important examples of neoclassical monuments in Trieste, is currently home of the Camera di commercio, industria, artigianato e agricoltura di Trieste, and is also called the old Bag.
In front of the Palace of the Chamber of Commerce a column supporting the stone figure of an emperor. Is the column of Leopold I of Austria whose son, Charles VI, established in Trieste porto franco.

#5 Trieste Roman Theater
Trieste's Roman theater is located in Trieste at the foot of the San Giusto hill , right in the center of the city, on the edge of the old city, between Via Donota and Via del Teatro Romano.
At the time of its construction, the theater was outside the city walls and by the sea, which at that time reached as far as that area. On its steps, built also taking advantage of the natural slope of the hill, from 3,500 to 6,000 spectators could be accommodated, depending on the various sources. The construction of the theater dates back to the end of the 1st century BC and was extended at the beginning of the 2nd century AD Probably it was built by the Trieste Quinto Petronio Modesto , procurator and bells of the emperor Trajan , mentioned in several inscriptions, which according to other sources instead he only took care of renovation work.
Over the centuries the theater was then hidden by the houses that rose above it. Considered lost, it was identified in 1814 by the architect Pietro Nobile , but only in 1938 it was brought to light during the demolition of a part of the old city. The statues and inscriptions found in the excavations are kept at the Lapidario Tergestino at the Castello di san Giusto at the Civico Museo del Castello. Nowadays it is still used occasionally for outdoor summer shows.

This week, we found ourselves in the beautiful and scenic Trieste, Italy as we were traveling from Munich to our destination: the cruise ship that would take us on our tour around the Mediterranean. But, we ended up having about 24 hours to spend in this beautiful city, so we decided to make the most of it!

Trieste, Italy is located on the very far northeastern part of the country, near the border of Slovenia. It was actually a part of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire up until 1918, and was a jewel and fourth largest city of the Hapsburg Monarchy. The city has always been an important center for trade, given its location directly on the Adriatic Sea, and it has been fought over by many world powers.

When we arrived we had a list of places that we wanted to see. We settled into our hotel, and then set out on our little Trieste adventure. We first saw the beautiful and serene Giant's Staircase, a large stone set of stairs that lead up the side of the mountain. We followed these steps until we reached one of our first stops, the Remembrance Park (Parco della Rimembranza). Here we stopped to pay our respects to the hundreds of men who died in World War I (to which the park was dedicated), and World War II. It is a beautiful park, with large trees that were planted for each man killed in the war, and it overlooks the beautiful valley where the northern part of Trieste lies.

From there, we made our way over to the Castello di San Guisto, which sits high on the same hill as the Remembrance Park. This fortress started being built in the 15th century and was finished in the 17th century, overlooking the three sides of Trieste, the north, the port, and the south. It never really saw any military action, so the fort is very well preserved, and visitors can actually go inside and see many of the old quarters and the museum that was built there. There are sometimes even events that take place here, such as concerts.

On the same hill is the Trieste Cathedral, or the Basilica cattedrale di San Giusto Martire. This cathedral dates back to the 14th century and is a beautiful example of stonework and the building methods of the time. It actually stands on top of an old Roman temple that used to be part of the forum that also stands on this hill. This Roman forum that sits here is a great exemplification of how important this city was to the ancient Roman peoples. And this forum is amazing to see. You have to check it out if you come here!

Making our way down from the hill, we stopped to see the Arco di Riccardo, an old Roman stone archway that is believed to be one of the old gates of the city, though nobody really knows what it used to be or why just this one archway survived. It stands among the modern buildings, so the juxtaposition here is astounding.

From there we also saw another example of the city's ancient past, the Teatro Romano, or the Roman Theatre. This theatre was once outside the city walls and looked right down onto the sea, giving the viewers there a wonderful scenic view while they watched their plays and listened to presentations. This theatre is incredibly well-preserved, and it seems very small but actually used to hold over 6,000 people!

From there, we ventured out toward the sea and saw the beautiful Piazza Unita d'Italia, or the Unity Plaza of Italy, which is a huge open area that stands with government buildings all around with one side open to the sea. We also saw the Grand Canal, which is a peaceful spot full of shops, restaurants, and other piazzas.

Trieste, Italy is a wonderful and peaceful place to visit. Not to mention the natural beauty that stands all around on the northernmost coast of the Adriatic Sea. If you are going to visit Italy, we strongly recommend that you take the 2 hour train ride from Venice and enjoy some time in Trieste. It truly is a jewel on the Adriatic.

One day in Trieste, Italy (what to visit)

One day in Trieste, Italy (what to visit)
The Province of Trieste is situated towards the end of a narrow strip of land in southeast Friuli Venezia Giulia, between the Adriatic Sea and Italy's border with Slovenia. This is an extraordinary destination for its historic treasures, artworks and middle-European character. Off Trieste's coast is its broad Gulf, with numerous tiny bays, small harbours and breathtaking reefs; of course, Miramare Castle is accompanied by the splendid blue of the sea. The area of Trieste is characterized by the steep karstic landscape continually revealing different, unique and charming features. Close to the coast is a rocky moor with Mediterranean vegetation, where the Bora wind blows, while inland are hills with hollows and scrubs. Several protected areas in the region include the Val Rosandra Nature Reserve, the Marine Reserve of Miramare, and the Falesie di Duino Nature Reserve. The Marine Reserve of Miramare is located in a coastal sea landscape characterized by sharp rocks and diverse underwater flora and fauna. The Falesie di Duino Nature Reserve is known for its white cliffs that overhang the sea. The charm of the area resides not only in its natural traits but also in the elegant city of Trieste, where the Habsburg influence is noticeable; the inland small towns with their longstanding traditions; and other quaint touristic draws on the coast - countless gems set within this tiny strip of land.

3 THINGS TO DO on Day Trip in ITALY 🇮🇹 (Trieste)

We had one day to explore Trieste, on an Italy Day Trip, so here are the 3 things we couldn’t miss.

We are currently on a Croatia road trip, taking our RV arround, mostly covering Croatia and Slovenia. But we also really wanted to take a quick day trip to Italy since it literally borders where we were driving through from Umag, Croatia to Lake Bled, Slovenia.

On our way, we figured out all the things to do in Trieste, Italy and found that food, coffee, and gelato are 3 major things to do in this region. So of course, we had to take advantage on our one day in Italy. In this Travel Vlog, explore this beautiful coastal town and see how the location of the city and the history of the coffee have played a major role in Trieste history and tourism.

We hope you enjoy Trieste as much as we did! And make sure to take a quick stop over in this magical Italian town before you head to other parts of the region.

TOP ATTRACTIONS IN TRIESTE, Italy | 3 days in this beautiful city

TOP ATTRACTIONS IN TRIESTE, Italy. We spent 3 days around this beautiful city admiring its architecture, which is very different from the other cities in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. In fact, the neoclassic and liberty style was typical of cities under the Austro-Hungarian empire. We explored the Roman ruins you can find just a few minutes uphill from Trieste's main square, and we visited the interiors of a luxurious '900 insurance company headquarters which has been today converted into a Hilton hotel, in which we stayed in during those days.
If you're curious to find out about the top attractions in Trieste and what to see in 3 days, please watch this video!
This video was filmed in June 2020.
