We're visiting the town of Todi, which is an amazing medieval gem in the heart of Umbria, Iyaly
Todi is an excellent example of your typical Italian hilltown, with its grand piazza in the center, a major focal point for people to gather at all times of day and on into the evening.
Anchored by the Cathedral at one end and at the other end of the piazza we have some important civic buildings. The museum, courthouse, and Town Hall.
It's a grand place for the stroll in the evening, especially at twilight, the passeggiata the people come out walk their dogs, enjoy some conversation with their friends and neighbors.
And there are many little pedestrian lanes that extend throughout this town that are great fun to explore.
Todi has got a very dramatic setting, with its old stone houses packed in pretty snuggly in this compact town that makes it a delight to explore on foot.
Some of the streets here in Todi of course are very steep. After all it's a hilltop town.
But if you just want to stay in the central Piazza area is actually quite level at the top.

Todi, Umbria, Italy - main shopping street and grand piazza

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
We are taking another look at Todi in Umbria, Italy, featuring all new scenes.
Spending some quality time on the main shopping street, and in the grand piazza, a fine place to see the locals of all ages out playing, and strolling and talking with their friends. It's the most historic part of town. We will also walk along some of the interesting side streets.
Some lanes turn into staircases, because Todi is a hill town, and from different perspectives you get great views looking out across the countryside.
You'll see a beautiful fountain right along the central part of the main shopping street on the small Piazza Bartolomeo d’Alviano. The eagle statue at the center is a symbol of the city of Todi. Traditionally he's the bird that chose this location to build a city, with shops and pizzerias nearby.
Todi only has one main shopping street. Here it is called Corso Cavour, and a little bit lower down, it changes names to via Roma, lined with very interesting shops for locals and visitors alike. Coming out of the southeast corner of Piazza Del Popolo, you can't miss it.
The streets were obviously laid out way before there was any automobiles, perhaps as far back as the Roman times, and they were for pedestrians, and horses, and cows, and goats and other animals, but now it's adapted to the modern world where we can have a mix of cars and people.
Of course, being Italy, you will always find wonderful places to eat – pizza, pasta and salad are the basics, accompanied by some local wine, perhaps at an outdoor terrace that offers a spectacular view across the countryside.
Corso Cavour runs along the hillside ridge but you can easily walk down and get a different view, looking straight across into the town itself, looking across the fertile farmlands of the valley and then back up at the town. Return up a convenient staircase and you're soon back on the main street again.
This is part three of our series on this wonderful hilltown.

Todi, Umbria, Italy, walking tour

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
The hill towns of Italy are magnificent places to explore, and in this program we are taking a deep dive into one of the finest of all of them. It's called Todi in Umbria.
We'll be focusing on the little pedestrian lanes and the piazzas, lined with historic buildings. We will see monumental arches in the old, fortified walls and some modern shops.
We'll have a look at the main Piazza Del Popolo in the daytime and at night, and take a walk along the main shopping street that extends out from the piazza. But mostly we are strolling through those charming little pedestrian lanes.
The town of Todi is another one of the medieval gems of Umbria. It's very ancient town, origins go back 3000 years. It was first settled by the local folks, the Umbri, built a wall around it, and then the Romans conquered and built their wall around it, 2000 years ago, and then during the medieval times in the Middle Ages, the third wall was built around Todi. So it was very well protected and incredibly preserved. All of the buildings within these medieval walls are original stone structures, most of them are at least seven or 800 years old. So it's really like walking through a castle, like a huge, fortified castle. It's almost like a Walt Disney fairytale come to life.
This is the second of our videos about Todi, with different content than our first video, you can find here:
In this video we focus more on walking the little pedestrian lanes, away from the center -- the back lanes.

Todi is a town of the province of Perugia, region of Umbria, in central Italy. It is perched on a tall two-crested hill overlooking the east bank of the river Tiber, commanding distant views in every direction.
In the 1990s, Richard S. Levine, a professor of Architecture at the University of Kentucky, described Todi as the model sustainable city, because of its scale and its ability to reinvent itself over time. After that, the Italian press reported on Todi as the world's most livable city.

Todi, Umbria, complete tour

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
Todi is an excellent example of a well-preserved Italian hill town. It's a fascinating medieval gem in the heart of Umbria and yet Todi is off the beaten track of tourists. It's one of those authentic places that are not crowded, but Italians in the know are quite familiar with it because this village is so wonderful. It's next to the Appenine mountains with a patchwork of vineyards and olive groves.
Because we're on a hill, the surrounding lowlands can gather mist, sometimes with a magical lighting effect. It's an old-fashioned small town with a friendly atmosphere. Todi is located about 40 kilometers from Perugia in a straight line distance, 100 kilometers from Siena, and 150 kilometers from Florence. During our Todi visit, we'll be focusing on the little pedestrian lanes and the piazzas lined with historic buildings.
Information available at official tourist information site:

For information about finding a local guide in Todi:

We'll see monumental arches in the old fortified walls. Todi has quite a few of these little pedestrian alleyways. No cars here, just people walking and residences, apartments lining these little narrow lanes. While it is a very old town, there are quite a few young people living here. If you're out walking in the morning, you'll see them on their way to class.
These narrow, curved lanes can be a little confusing, so you might get a bit lost. It's a small town, you can't get too lost, but you have a choice. Do you want to just go wander or follow a particular route that will bring you to most of the good parts of town? To help you out, we're going to offer an efficient route.

It was founded between the 8th and 7th centuries BC. by the Umbrians on a hill located on the left bank of the Tiber, about 400 meters above sea level and a short distance from the territory inhabited by the Etruscans, with the name of Tutere, which means border town.

According to legend, initially the city was to have been built at the foot of the hill, on the left bank of the Tiber, but the tablecloth with which the founders were having breakfast was taken by an eagle who, flying, dropped it on the top of the hill.

This event was interpreted as a sign from the gods, so the founders decided to move and build the city on top of the hill................................................................................................................

About Me:
My name is David Hoffmann and for the last decade I have been traveling around the world in search of unique culture, food and history! Since starting Davidsbeenhere in 2008, I have traveled to 71 countries and over 1,000 destinations, which I welcome you to check out on my YouTube Channel, blog and social medias.

I focus a great deal on food and historic sites, as you probably have seen! I love to experience the different flavors that each destination has to offer, whether it’s casual Street food or gourmet restaurant dining. I’m also passionate about learning the local history and culture.
