Things to do in OAXACA, Mexico. The BEST tour of OAXACA!? MITLA, MARKETS, MEZCAL and MORE!

Looking for things to do in Oaxaca, Mexico? Come along with us on THE BEST TOUR OF OAXACA to Mitla, Tlacolula’s Sunday Market, Teotitlan del Valle, Don Agave Mezcal Distillery, Arbol del Tule, and Caldo De Piedra!

Hello fellow Country Collectors! Today our adventure is taking us to the east of Oaxaca city. We are starting at Mitla - one of the most famous sites of Zapotec Culture, and then continuing back towards Oaxaca stopping next at Tlacolula de Matamoros. This town is famed for their traditional Sunday Market, where we are going to try to find some delicious barbacoa - bbq goat (including the head)! The next stop will bring us to Teotitlan Del Valle where we will learn all about their famous weavings. We’ll be feeling thirsty by then, so the next stop on the tour is at Don Agave Mezcal distillery where we will tour the grounds and learn all about how this magical beverage is produced and of course how it tastes! Stumbling to our next stop, we won’t believe our eyes at what we see! The WIDEST tree in the world! Is this the mezcal talking? Haha.. Our last stop on this incredible tour will bring us to Caldo De Piedra, aka Stone Soup for a once in a lifetime dining experience! Come along with us and see what this region of Oaxaca has to offer! XOXO

Meatfest! Sunday Market in Tlacolula, Oaxaca, Mexico #shorts

One of the best kept secrets of #oaxaca!

On Sundays, about a 45 minute bus ride away from #oaxacacity you'll find the large and vibrant regional market of Tlacolula. Local people from all over the region flock to this once a week market to buy and sell their wares.

It is known for the lines of butchers with grills in front of them where the market goers can choose their meats and vegetables and grill it right there.

MEXICAN STREET FOOD- TLACOLULA MARKET food in OAXACA

Subscribe for more food and travel videos:
Chasing a Plate is in Oaxaca, Mexico! We are going to Tlacolula Market today it's one of the biggest and oldest markets in the Oaxacan area. We opt to get the bus to Tlacolula- we were supposed to get the bus up to the baseball stadium and then have to get another bus but the bus came by which said Tlacolula anyway so we just jumped on. We got dropped right outside Tlacolula market and it cost 15 pesos each/ 70 or 80 cents USD.

A lot of surrounding farmers and ranchers and families come into the market to sell and trade their goods and so it's a place to meet their friends and do business and chat, it's a really convivial atmosphere.

The first thing we sample is tejate. It's a pre-Hispanic drink, it's made out of corn, or maize, cacao and also the pip of the mamey fruit which has been roasted. It's really good and really refreshing.

We then buy some tamales! These are mole negro, negro being the dark mole so mole is the sauce of the region, it has chocolate and chilis and herbs and garlic and onion, everyone has a different recipe, these will have chicken, the corn dough, mole and it's wrapped and steamed.

Tlacolula is really nice, it's actually not too crowded and there's so much to look at, so many different foods to try, gorgeous flowers everywhere, women in traditional dress, it's really vibrant and colourful.

We grab some lunch of rotisserie chicken which comes with rice, frijoles (beans), macaroni salad, coleslaw and tortillas of course. All for 35 pesos! Lunch done, it was fine nothing to really bother talking about too much, not too exciting and it was a bit dry.

If you're tossing up over Tlacolula market and Ocotlan market which you would have seen two vlogs ago our vote is definitely Ocotlan. Tlacolula has a lot of tourists around, we're in that pool obviously but it doesn't feel as earthy, rural and it's not nearly as exciting. There's more food options too at Ocotlan.

We head back to Oaxaca as we're sitting down to film a podcast with our mate Ryan Wilkes from The Path Less Traveled:

After filming the podcast it's dinner time and we are keen to try a popular Oaxaca street food. A tlayuda! A tlayuda is a gigantic tortilla which is baked and it comes with pork lard, beans, quesillo- Oaxacan string cheese and you can add meats on the top. We've added steak and also chorizo. Traditionally that's all a tlayuda has but sometimes you see them and they're served open with avocado, tomato, lettuce and all that sort of fancy stuff on the top. But we're going trad tonight. People describe it like a Mexican pizza! The meal with 2 drinks and 2 tlayudas is 140 peso so about $7USD. Bargain!

Thank you so much for watching we've had an awesome day exploring Oaxaca and the surrounds.

We hope we've inspired you to eat and explore like a traveler, not a tourist.

BEST MEXICAN STREET FOOD in Oaxaca, MEXICO | Eating in Tlacolula Market, Oaxaca, Mexico

Oaxaca is one of Mexico's culinary hotspots. The state's geography and indigenous cultures all play a part in its phenomenal food culture. In this Oaxaca food tour we're travelling about 40 minutes outside of Oaxaca city to the town of Tlacolula, which holds a traditional market day every Sunday. People flood in from neighbouring villages and towns to trade, shop, eat and catch up with their neighbours. We eat our way around Tlacolula market including a rare Oaxacan street food including tejate- a pre-Hispanic drink of the Mixtec and Zapotec people. Also on the menu- barbacoa de chivo (goat barbacoa) and we grill up our own massive Mexican street food feast alongside the locals in the meat hall-  what an experience! We hope you enjoy this Oaxaca food tour!#mexicanfood #oaxaca #oaxacafood

What we ate and where we ate it:

1. Tejate
2. Barbacoa de chivo (tacos and consomme)
3. Tasajo (cured beef), avocados, salsa roja, cebollitas (small onions) and tortillas

All eaten at Tlacolula Market held every Sunday. We caught a bus to Tlacolula for $20MXN each (one way) from outside of the baseball stadium in Oaxaca City. Buses back to Oaxaca City leave from the bus station in Tlacolula throughout the day. The price is the same upon return to Oaxaca City.

🇲🇽 12hr ALL-DAY Bus to Oaxaca

We are Cindy and Eddie from SQUEEZEtheDAY!!!

We’re taking a bus to our next destination. There’s two reasons for that. One, we want to see the landscape as we drive. Two, even though they would take about the same amount of time, the bus is much cheaper.

What we didn’t know was how much time it would take to drive from Puerto Escondido to Oaxaca by way of Salina Cruz. If you look at the map, that’s not a direct route. What you’re not seeing is that even though the path we take is twice as long, it’s only takes two hours longer to travel.

The best part of this journey turns out to be the amazing things we see along the way. Towns and cities, mountains and beaches. All of this through our window as we relax and let someone else do the driving. Totally worth it.

And here's the list of some of towns we drove through:
Tilzapote, Guapinole, Lagartero, El Popoyote, La Ciénega, Barra Copalita, El Crucero de Chacalapa, San Pedro Huamelula, Tehuantepec, Jalapa, Magdalena Tequisistlán, Nejapa de Madero, Santiago Matatlan, Tlacolula de Matamoros, Santa María del Tule.

Please don't be mad if we missed yours. Let us know in the comments section!

That concludes this trip, however there are many more to follow. Make sure you like and subscribe as well as select the notifications bell so you can keep up with us. We would also love to hear your thoughts on the video so go ahead and leave a comment below. And as always, Squeeze the Day!!!

Who we are:
We are Cindy and Eddie from Pennsylvania. We started our YouTube channel in April 2020 after the world took a pause. Since then, we’ve been working to find ways to travel full time on a budget, with a cat. Meet Cinders, a 19 year old black cat with the calmest personality you’ll meet in a cat. She goes where we go, and we want you to go with us too. Enjoy our videos as we show you what we find along the way.

Our first trips were local to our area, Bucks County, and limited to days we weren’t working full time jobs or being restricted by lock-downs. In November of 2020, an opportunity presented itself and we decided to take our Travel Trailer out of storage and travel full time across America. Our current goal of visiting all 50 states has been delayed, but we haven’t given up. Keep following along to see what we're up to next.
