10 Best Seaside Towns in the UK
What are the best seaside towns in the United Kingdom? New towns are developing at the seaside across the UK in addition to those ancient towns and cities. All of these towns and cities are worming their way into the hearts of tourists from home and abroad. With due respect to these towns, and out of a deep sense of duty, we want to identify which of these towns are the best so that we can help the decision-making process for those having reasons to consider seaside towns. On the basis of that, we present to you the 10 best seaside towns in the UK.
Please note that most of these best towns in the UK have at one time or the other been the best in England.
10. Swanage, Dorset, England
The tenth place we’ll consider as one the best seaside towns in the UK is Swanage in South West of England. The town has been a popular seaside resort since Victorian times. Up till now, families have continued to enjoy its calm shallow beach. This seaside is also one of the 10 best seaside resorts in the UK.
With its panoramic views, the seaside resort offers relaxing luxurious holidays in self-catering accommodation in caravans and luxury hot tub lodges. If you want to own a holiday home, they’re available here with unrivaled views across the bay. The town is about one kilometer from the leisurely beautiful Swanage Railway. Its proximity to this and other parks, beaches, and castles makes it a good choice.
9. St Davids, Pembrokeshire, Wales
Stepping out of England, we find a small city and community in Pembrokeshire known as St Davids. It is the smallest location in the whole of the United Kingdom with city status. With its stunning coastal scenery unmatched in Pembrokeshire, it’s also the smallest urban area by local authority boundary.
One of the reasons for its inclusion on this list is its ability to blend its sacred status with its National Park. St Davids has a relaxed and vibrant atmosphere as you see surf shops, outdoor adventure centers, holiday cottages, and hotels in the shadow of its cathedral.
8. Southwold, England
When this town was found in the ninth position on the list of the most popular seaside destinations, we knew that it would be among the 10 best seaside towns in the UK. Now, it is the number 8 on this list. All year round, Southwold remains a tourist attraction, thanks to its dramatic coastline and beautiful architecture. Its cozy pub lunches and walks along its beach are charming.
As you walk along its pier, you will see spectacular views as you check in and out of many independent shops. You would love the charming seaside resort of Southwold. Though it’s almost an island, its sandy beach and hut-lined promenade offer a wonderful environment for holidaymakers and weekenders.
7. Filey, North Yorkshire, England
Ironically to some, Filey which is a town in the Borough of Scarborough considered unpopular by some people is one of the 10 best seaside towns in the UK. Truly, this beautiful seaside destination in North Yorkshire deserves a slot here as one of the most popular in the UK. It used to be a fishing village before developing into a popular resort with a very large beach that is playing a remarkable role in popularizing it.
It is quieter than most of its neighbors and most of the other coastal towns. This is because it has enough accommodations, seats, and transportation. There is no need for any rush here. You can just go there and enjoy your peace.

Places to see in ( Cullompton - UK )
Places to see in ( Cullompton - UK )
Cullompton is a town and civil parish in the district of Mid Devon and the county of Devon, England, locally known as Cully. It is 13 miles north-east of Exeter and lies on the River Culm. The earliest evidence of occupation is from the Roman period – there was a fort on the hill above the town and occupation in the current town centre. Columtune was mentioned in Alfred the Great's will which left it to his youngest son Aethelweard (c.880-922). In the past the town's economy had a large component of wool and cloth manufacture, then later leather working and paper manufacture.
A large proportion of town's inhabitants are commuters but there is some local manufacturing, including flour and paper mills. It has a monthly farmers' market held on the second Saturday of every month which is the oldest event of its kind in the South West. It is home to two grade I listed buildings: the fifteenth-century St Andrew's parish church and the seventeenth-century house known as The Walronds. The centre of the town is the only conservation area in Mid Devon and there are seven grade II* listed buildings and ninety grade II listed buildings in the parish.
The derivation of the name Cullompton is disputed. One derivation is that the town's name means Farmstead on the River Culm with Culm probably meaning knot or tie (referring to the river's twists and loops). In 1805 or 1806 the last bull-baiting in the town took place. On 7 July 1839, a severe fire destroyed many houses in Cullompton.
Cullompton is 4 miles (6.4 km) south-east of Tiverton, 13 miles (21 km) north-north-east of Exeter and 149 miles (240 km) west-south-west of London. It is at about 70 m above sea level. The parish covers nearly 8,000 acres (32 km2) and stretches for 7 miles (11 km) along the Culm valley.
The street plan of the town still reflects the medieval layout of the town. Most shops lie along Fore Street with courts behind them linked by alleyways. The length of the high street reflects the prosperity of the town from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century when it was a centre of the cloth trade. The street plan is still fundamentally the same as shown on a map of 1663, with a wider area at the North end where markets were held, roads to Tiverton and Ponsford and a small lane leading down to a mill (now known as Lower Mill). This map has only two buildings with roofs coloured blue (conventionally meaning they were of slate) – St Andrew's church and the Walronds. There are two grade I listed buildings in Cullompton: the fifteenth century parish church (St Andrew's) and the Walronds at 6 Fore Street. There are also seven grade II* listed buildings and ninety grade II listed buildings. The centre of the town is a conservation area – the only one in the Mid Devon area. Hillersdon House, a Victorian manor house is near to the town centre and within the parish.
The Walronds was probably built in 1605 which is the date over the hall fireplace. St Andrew's church dates from the fifteenth century. Cullompton Manor House is a grade II* listed building with sections built in 1603 (dated panel and initials TT for Thomas Trock on the top corner of the front of the house) and 1718 (on a lead cistern head of a drainpipe, are the letters (L) S/WT (R) and the date 1718). Running parallel to the main high street is a leat with a public footpath running along it. The leat runs from Head Weir, north of Cullompton.
Junction 28 of the M5 lies within the parish of Cullompton and a short distance from the town centre. The Bristol and Exeter Railway opened Cullompton railway station when the railway opened on 1 May 1844. Devon County Council's Travel Transport Plan includes the reopening of Cullompton Railway Station.

Grand Western Canal | Tiverton | Horse Drawn Barge and walk
The Grand Western Canal in Tiverton, Devon, is the location of this week's video.
I took a walk along the canal from the basin in Tiverton. I was hoping to come across the horse drawn barge on one of its scheduled voyages.
I met it as I walked and it was a truly special experience which I hope will come across in this video. The two minutes silence where all that was audible was the swishing water and the clippety clop of the horses hooves was truly magical. I have included some of it in the video. I hope the specialness of the silence comes over in the video.
The bargeman chatted to me and told me lots of interesting information as I walked along the tow path and I have tried to relay some of that here in this video to you. It is a living heritage attraction meaning that you get to actually experience the heritage how it would have been, rather than learning about dead heritage.
The Grand Western Canal is also a country park and local nature reserve. It is teaming with wildlife.
I can certainly recommend this trip to you if you are looking for a couple of hours of calm, floating along through beautiful countryside with onboard refreshments and very interesting commentary.
Here is a link to the Tiverton Canal Co website where you can find lots more interesting history about the canal aswell as timetables and other helpful information if you wish to plan a trip on the 75 seater barge.

Tiverton Canal. Tiverton Devon. Tea Garden at the End.
This video shows the Tiverton Wharf, Horse-Drawn Barge, and Ducks Ditty Coffee Bar on Tiverton Canal, and the view of the canal in Tiverton Devon, England, in the summer of 2022. The canal is 11.25 miles (18km) long, but here is just a short scenic walk along the canal.
Permanently moored on Tiverton Wharf, Ducks Ditty Bar is a 34 years old floating coffee bar on Tiverton Canal. A fully licenced bar and artisan coffee house, it offers an amazing view over the canal and is close to one of the last Horse-Drawn Barges in Great Britain and Tiverton Canal Co's Boat Hire. This hidden gem in Devon is a lovely place for families and couples who are interested in water, wildlife, boats, canals, etc, with FREE ACCESS to Canal Park all year round.

Tiverton, Rhode Island (+ Fall River History tidbit)
TIL of the relationship between Fall River and Tiverton.
In 1856, the northern part of the town was set apart from Tiverton, and renamed Fall River, Rhode Island, by the Rhode Island General Assembly.[9] On March 1, 1862, in a case between the states that reached the United States Supreme Court, both Fall Rivers were made part of Massachusetts and the state boundary was placed in its current location near State Avenue.
