Jerusalem Travel Documentary - Ten Beautiful Places to Visit

Jerusalem is one of the world’s oldest cities and a fascinating travel destination. It’s holy to Jews, Muslims, and Christians, and has been at the crossroads of cultures and religions for millennia. While it continues as a spiritual and historic center, it is also a dynamic city, where traditional lifestyles blend with cosmopolitan ideas.

In this video, I will show you 10 beautiful places in Jerusalem that I visited, as part of a longer journey through the Holy Land, an area that is known today as Israel and Palestine.

From the historic center of Jerusalem with its narrow alleyways and religious landmarks, to the bustling modern city around Jaffa street. From intriguing neighborhoods like Nahlaot and Mea Shearim, to the mountain village of Ein Karem. And from the moving Yad Vashem memorial to the vibrant Mahane Yehuda market.

Jerusalem is a complicated city, in many ways, and is also at the center of the conflict between Israel and Palestine. However, this video should be seen as a traveler’s perspective of the city, focusing on positive stories and things to do. For those interested in the modern political history of the region, I recommend to read, watch, and listen to as many different sources as you can.

This is my first long trip after the pandemic started, and I’m grateful for the chance to travel again. It’s also my second visit to the region, and therefore I use both new and older footage for this video.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We begin this journey through Jerusalem in the Old City, where many of the most important sights are located. Its winding alleys lead you through quiet residential neighborhoods and bustling markets. The Old City is divided into four quarters, the Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and Armenian, and all have their own character.

It’s in and near these neighborhoods that you’ll find some of the holiest sites of the three main monotheistic religions, including the Western Wall, the Temple Mount (known as Al-Haram Ash-Sharif) to Muslims), with its incredible Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Via Dolorosa. If you want to take it all in from a distance, the Temple Mount offers one of the best viewpoints in Jerusalem.

Move away from here, and you’ll find that the Old City is actually a small part of today’s Jerusalem. Its modern center has a very different character, with the charming Mamilla shopping street, bustling Jaffa street, and the vibrant Mahane Yehuda market, which is not only a food paradise, but also gives an insight into the daily lives of Jerusalemites.

Close to the market is the friendly Nahlaot neighborhood, while Mea Shearim is one of the city’s most conservative areas, mostly inhabited by Haredi Jews, many of whom lead traditional lifestyles.

Perhaps the most moving and powerful museum in the world, Yad Vashem is a memorial to the six million Jews that died in the Second World War. Visitors can learn about the Holocaust here, through a number of different museums, exhibitions, gardens, and memorials.

We finish this journey in the picturesque mountain village of Ein Karem, which is filled with churches, monasteries, and historic homes. It’s an important place of worship, but also a popular weekend getaway for people living in the city.

Journey Through Palestine - Travel Documentary

Palestine means a lot of different things to many people, and may not be the most obvious travel destination. It is often associated with conflict and political unrest, overlooking the fact that it’s also a beautiful and fascinating region, with a vibrant culture, incredible historic landmarks, spectacular natural scenery, inspiring religious sites, tasty food, and friendly, welcoming people.

On this journey, I’m traveling through the Holy Land, a region important to the three main monotheistic religions, and known today as Israel and Palestine.

In this first episode, I’m exploring the West Bank, the largest and most accessible part of Palestine. From stunning natural scenery to intriguing historic sites. From the busy streets of Ramallah to the narrow alleyways of Nablus’ old city. From religious landmarks in Hebron and Bethlehem to the ancient ruins of Jericho. Along the way, I meet some of the people that call this land home, and sample the local cuisine.

I’ll do so from a traveler’s perspective, focusing on the positive stories and things to do. But here and there I also mention the conflict between Israel and Palestine, since it has impacted the lives of many people in the region. For those interested in the politics and modern history of the region, however, I recommend to read, watch, and listen to as many different sources as you can.

This is my first long trip after the pandemic started, and I’m grateful for the chance to travel again. It’s also my second visit to the region. While much of the footage is from the end of 2021 (including the ‘vlog style’ parts), I’ll also use some background material from 5 years earlier.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We start this journey in Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus Christ, with its impressive Church of the Nativity at its core. After visiting the church, I explore the streets around it, meeting people and eating food in the bustling bazaar. There are many other places worth your time in and around Bethlehem, including the Milk Grotto, an olive oil factory (press), Shepherd’s Fields, and the Mar Saba monastery, surrounded by arid mountains.

Hebron is the next stop, a city in the South of Palestine, and (among other things) famous for its glassblowing factories, and also the Tomb of the Patriarch, or Ibrahimi Mosque. The streets around this place are divided between the local Palestinian community and Israeli settlers. As a tourist, you can visit both areas. At the end of the day, my guide Salwa takes me to a traditional Palestinian restaurant, where we eat some delicious food.

We continue this trip in Jericho, regarded as the oldest city in the world. Located next to the Dead Sea, it’s also one of the lowest cities on our planet, and can get very hot in Summer. Other sights to visit around Jericho include the Dead Sea, Nabi Musa, Qasr-al-Yahud, and St George’s Monastery, built into a cliff in Wadi Qelt.

Getting lost in the narrow alleys of Nablus’ old city was among my favorite things to do. There’s a surprise waiting for you around every corner, and perhaps the best one was the Al Aqsa kunafeh store, which is said to make the best version of this Palestinian dessert, which is popular around the Middle East.

We finish this journey in Ramallah, a young and dynamic city, attracting people from around the region to find work and get educated. It’s a commercial hub with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, and provides a different perspective on this part of Palestine.

Rosh Hashanah 5,785 celebrations (the New Year in Judaism) in Tel Aviv,Israel 2024

#discoveringisrael
חגיגות ראש השנה ה'תשפה בתל אביב, ישראל 2024
Rosh Hashanah (Hebrew: רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה‎, Rōʾš hašŠānā, literally 'head of the year') is the New Year in Judaism. The biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah (יוֹם תְּרוּעָה‎, Yōm Tərūʿā, lit. 'day of shouting/blasting'). It is the first of the High Holy Days (יָמִים נוֹרָאִים‎, Yāmīm Nōrāʾīm, 'Days of Awe), as specified by Leviticus 23:23–25,[1] that occur in the late summer/early autumn of the Northern Hemisphere. Rosh Hashanah begins ten days of penitence culminating in Yom Kippur, as well as beginning the cycle of autumnal religious festivals running through Sukkot which end on Shemini Atzeret in Israel and Simchat Torah everywhere else.

Best Places in ISRAEL (Part 1) #israel🇮🇱 #holyland🙏🏼 Masada/ Caesarea/ Arbel/ Dead Sea/ Tel Aviv

These are the best places to visit in Israel. Please note that this is just the first part of the series of places I will feature.

Masada : An ancient fortress in southern Israel’s Judean Desert. It's on a massive plateau overlooking the Dead Sea. A cable car and a long, winding path climb up to the fortifications, built around 30 B.C. Among the ruins is King Herod's Palace, which sprawls over 3 rock terraces, and a Roman-style bathhouse with mosaic floors.

Mount Arbel : A mountain in The Lower Galilee near Tiberias in Israel, with high cliffs, views of Mount Hermon and the Golan Heights, a cave fortress, and ruins of an ancient synagogue. Mount Arbel is the believed place where Christ gave the Great Commission

Caesarea : A town on Israel's Mediterranean coast. It’s known for Caesarea National Park, which includes a large Roman amphitheater and the historic port. On the site is an archaeological park with pillars and sculptures, and the remains of a hippodrome, with frescoes and stone seating.
Acre (Akko) : One of the oldest port cities in northwest Israel, on the Mediterranean coast. It’s known for its well-preserved old city walls. In a tunnel in the walls is the Treasures in the Walls Ethnographic Museum, depicting daily life from the Ottoman times to the 20th century. The mosaic-covered Or Torah (Tunisian) Synagogue has 7 torah arks. The 18th-century Al-Jazzar Mosque has marble pillars and underground pools.

The Dead Sea : Also known by other names, is a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and the West Bank and Israel to the west. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley, and its main tributary is the Jordan River. The lowest point on Earth is a salt-rich lake surrounded by desert beaches, mineral spas & oases.

Tel Aviv : Israel’s largest metropolitan area, serves as a hub for innovation, culture, and creativity. “Tel Aviv Nonstop City” is more than just a slogan. With the city’s beautiful beaches, diverse cultural scene, top-notch cuisine, and vibrant nightlife, there’s always something to see and do here. The city serves as a meeting point between old and new, reflecting tradition and history while embracing innovation, pluralism, and diversity. Here you can be whoever you want to be - whether you’re a party-goer, culture enthusiast, or just like to chill - Tel Aviv has a place for you.

Shocking Discovery at Ancient Temple in Israel

Residue of Cannabis was found at the altar of an ancient temple in the territory of Judah. The Temple was first dated to the time of King David and Solomon, however, upon further examination the archaeologists came to a different conclusion.

Jewish prayer near the Western Wall in Jerusalem during Sukkot, Israel 2024

#discoveringisrael
תפילה יהודית ליד הכותל המערבי בירושלים במהלך סוכות, ישראל 2024
Sukkot,[a] also known as the Feast of Tabernacles or Feast of Booths, is a Torah-commanded holiday celebrated for seven days, beginning on the 15th day of the month of Tishrei. It is one of the Three Pilgrimage Festivals on which Israelites were commanded to make a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem. Biblically an autumn harvest festival and a commemoration of the Exodus from Egypt, Sukkot’s modern observance is characterized by festive meals in a sukkah, a temporary wood-covered hut.
The names used in the Torah are Festival of Ingathering (or Harvest Festival, Hebrew: חַג הָאָסִיף, romanized: ḥag hāʾāsif)[2] and Festival of Booths (Hebrew: חג הסכות, romanized: Ḥag hasSukkōṯ).[3][2] This corresponds to the double significance of Sukkot. The one mentioned in the Book of Exodus is agricultural in nature—Festival of Ingathering at the year's end (Exodus 34:22)—and marks the end of the harvest time and thus of the agricultural year in the Land of Israel. The more elaborate religious significance from the Book of Leviticus is that of commemorating the Exodus and the dependence of the Israelites on the will of God (Leviticus 23:42–43).

Shechem: Jacob's Well, Joseph's Tomb, Mt. Gerizim, Mt. Ebal, Christ & the Woman at the Well

See a video about biblical Shechem. One of the most important locations in the Holy Land.

DONATE:
TOUR TRIPS TO ISRAEL BY TODD FINK:
BOOKS ABOUT ISRAEL BY TODD FINK:

Location
1. Biblical Shechem is also known as Sychar in the New Testament, and as Tel Balata and Nablus, today.
2. Shechem is located about 30 miles (48 km.) north of Jerusalem and about 30 miles (48 km.) northeast of Tel Aviv.
3. It was in the Samaria region of Israel in the territory of Ephraim during Bible times.
4. It was on a main north-south travel route that linked the northern and southern parts of Israel.
5. It was also on a main east-west route that linked the coastal plain of Israel with the Jordan Valley.
6. Shechem lies between the two famous mountains of Gerizim and Ebal.
Historical Background
1. Shechem had a significant role in the Bible and is mentioned 58 times.
2. God first appeared to Abraham in Shechem and gave him the promise that he would inherit the land.
3. Abraham and Jacob lived here.
4. Joseph’s bones are buried here.
5. The blessings and curses given on Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal took place here.
6. Joshua rallied all Israel and made a covenant with them in Shechem.
7. The nation of Israel became divided in Shechem.
8. Shechem became the capital of the northern tribes of Israel under King Jeroboam’s rule.
9. On top of Mount Gerizim are substantial ruins.
• The Samaritans first built a temple here for worship in the 5th century. Later, in the 2nd century, they built walls around the temple to protect it.
• In the latter part of the 2nd century, the Hasmoneans (Jewish rule from 165–63 BC) destroyed the Samaritan’s temple on Mount Gerizim and the city at the base of the mountain (ancient Shechem).
• During the Roman occupation of Israel, the Samaritans were given permission by the Romans to rebuild their temple and city.
• In 475 AD, under Byzantine rule, the Samaritan temple was destroyed, and a Byzantine church was erected. Later, a monastery was built as well.
10. Jesus met with a Samaritan woman (John 4) at Jacob’s Well in Shechem. Today, the well is inside the Church of St. Photina, which was originally built in 380 AD. Over the years, the church was destroyed a number of times by natural and military forces. The current church building is overseen by the Greek Orthodox Church, which obtained the site in 1893.
11. The Samaritans were a small group of unfaithful Israelites who remained in the land of Israel and intermarried with foreign unbelievers after the deportation of Israel by the Assyrians in 722 BC. They established their own religion at Mount Gerizim and built their own temple. They were despised and rejected by the Jews and considered unclean. The Samaritans, likewise, despised the Jews and had few dealings with them. The Samaritans only believe in the Torah (first 5 books of the Old Testament).
