Places to see in ( Thornton Cleveleys - UK )

Thornton-Cleveleys is a conurbation consisting of the twin towns of Thornton and Cleveleys. The two towns formed a joint urban district from 1927 until 1974, before becoming part of Wyre. The two towns constitute part of the Blackpool Urban Area. The civil parish of Thornton became an urban district in 1900, and was then renamed Thornton-Cleveleys in 1927. On 1 April 1974, the urban district became part of the Borough of Wyre. Thornton-Cleveleys corresponds with six wards of the borough.

Thornton for Cleveleys railway station was formerly the principal intermediate stop on the Fleetwood branch of the LMS/British Rail London Midland Region railway, running from Poulton-le-Fylde, but it has been years since the station was used, and with the recent fencing-over of the level crossing in Station Road/Victoria Road East in order to prevent youths from congregating on the tracks, the glory days of Thornton are long since gone. However, a decision by an action group based in Poulton means they will finance a feasibility study into bringing the railway back to Thornton and Fleetwood.

Marsh Mill, a large well-preserved windmill, built in 1794, is a prominent landmark. It was commissioned by Bold Hesketh, uncle of Peter Hesketh (later Peter Hesketh-Fleetwood) who would go on to play a prominent role in the expansion of Fleetwood. Tragedy struck in May 1930, when a Miss Alice Baldwin and a Mrs Mary Jane Bailey visited the windmill with an interest in purchasing it.

A railway station was opened in Thornton in 1865. The opening of salt works at nearby Burn Naze by the United Alkali Company in the early 1890s (later becoming ICI) led to significant expansion of the village, with new houses and community buildings constructed. Thornton became an urban district council in 1900, surviving until 1974 when it became part of the Wyre Borough Council.

Places to see in ( Fleetwood - UK )

Fleetwood is a town and civil parish within the Wyre district of Lancashire, England, lying at the northwest corner of the Fylde. The site of the town has been continuously inhabited since the Middle Ages. Fleetwood acquired its modern character in the 1830s, when the principal landowner Peter Hesketh-Fleetwood, High Sheriff and MP, conceived an ambitious plan to re-develop the town to make it a busy seaport and railway spur. He commissioned the distinguished Victorian architect Decimus Burton to design a number of substantial civic buildings, including two lighthouses. Hesketh-Fleetwood's transport terminus schemes failed to materialise.

Decline of the fishing industry began in the 1960s, hastened by the Cod Wars with Iceland, though fish processing is still a major economic activity in Fleetwood. The town's most notable employer today is Lofthouse of Fleetwood, manufacturer of the lozenge Fisherman's Friend which is exported around the world.

Fleetwood is located on the Fylde Peninsula, 8 miles (13 km) north of Blackpool, on the western side of the mouth of the River Wyre. The town itself is on a peninsula, almost 2 miles (3 km) wide, bounded to the west by the Irish Sea, to the north by Morecambe Bay and to the east by the River Wyre. Access to Fleetwood is thus restricted, and for many years there were only two roads into and out of the town. A large sandbank, the North Wharf, extends some 2 1⁄4 miles (3.6 km) north into Morecambe Bay, and is exposed at low tide.

Fleetwood's economy still revolves around the traditional areas of fishing, tourism, port activity and light industry, but since the early 1970s the town has continued to struggle economically. A government report in 2006 stated that three of the town's five wards fall into the 5% to 10% most deprived wards in England. The town's largest and most prominent single employer is Lofthouse's of Fleetwood Ltd., manufacturers of Fisherman's Friend—a menthol lozenge popular worldwide and especially in Japan.

The Mount and the entire length of Fleetwood Promenade has an uninterrupted view across Morecambe Bay, a view described by author Bill Bryson in Chapter 23 of his book Notes From a Small Island as easily one of the most beautiful in the world, with unforgettable views across to the green and blue Lakeland hills: Scafell, Coniston Old Man, the Langdale Pikes. Directly across the Esplanade from the Mount lies the Marine Hall and Marine Gardens, Wyre Borough's largest entertainment venue, opened in 1935.

The 13 hectares of Fleetwood Memorial Park was developed out of the earlier Warrenhurst Park, itself an early-C20 park designed by Thomas Lumb of Blackpool. In 1917 the park was renamed Memorial Park in memory of those who died in the First World War. The memorial statue was added a few years later and memorial trees planted by the children who lost relatives. Fleetwood Pier, also known as 'Victoria Pier', was a feature of the town from its construction in 1910 until it was destroyed by fire in September 2008.

( Fleetwood - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Fleetwood . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Fleetwood - UK

Driving from Manchester to Thornton-Cleveleys & Blackpool then back to Droylsden, Manchester. 4k

I had to go to Thornton-Cleveleys to do some work for a customer, right on the sea front, what a lovely place it is. After I finished work I drove to Blackpool in the hope I could fly the drone in some secluded area, but it was very windy, so I just headed back home. Maybe next time I will manage to fly? :)

Thornton Cleveleys War Memorial at Four Lane Ends

Thornton Cleveleys War Memorial at Four Lane Ends is opposite Thornton Library and Little Theatre. Join us for a look around, as we approach Remembrance Sunday.

This War Memorial at Four Lane Ends includes three tributes to the fallen. It's a contemplative place, in contrast to the busy modern life of the nearby traffic light junction. But it's where everyone can see it as they pass through the busy crossroads.

A temporary Thornton Cleveleys war memorial was first constructed in 1919 at Woodlands Avenue, Thornton. Then a little later, a permanent war memorial was built at Four Lane Ends Thornton, in 1923. On 11th November 1923 it was officially unveiled. That day was the fifth anniversary of the end of the First World War.

The names of the unfortunate ones who didn't make it back from World War Two are inscribed in the three open-book tablets.

The ICI War Memorial commemorates company employees who died in both of the world wars.

Have you seen the Reefs at Cleveleys Beach? They're Honeycomb worm reefs - or Sabellaria Alveolata to give them their proper name. They've formed huge reef structures - visible at low tide. Take a look and find out more about these tiny worms and their huge homes. Filmed 1 May 2021.

The reefs at Cleveleys beach look very much like a thick fibrous mud. Not to be mistaken with the petrified forest - that's something else entirely! These huge structures are made of the protective honeycomb shaped tubes built by the worms. They're filter feeders and only about 3cm long.

Have you seen the reefs? They cover and uncover depending on the action of the tide on Cleveleys beach, and how much sand is over the top of them. It's quite a sight, and an amazing feeding ground for fish and birds.
