S1 – Ep 359 – Theunissen – Captivating Sights and a Mix of Emotions!
Our visit to Theunissen in the Free State was filled with captivating sights and a mix of emotions. As we ventured into the town, we were immediately greeted by the awe-inspiring presence of a magnificent steam locomotive. Its imposing form stood as a testament to the town's rich history. One notable highlight was the train station, even though its active days seemed to be behind it. It was heartening to witness the presence of diligent security guards, demonstrating a commitment to preserving the town's heritage and infrastructure. Moving forward, our exploration led us to the Voortrekker Memorial, an important landmark situated in front of the Town Hall. This significant piece of history was being carefully safeguarded by dedicated security personnel as well. The sense of reverence and appreciation for the past was palpable, and I felt privileged to have the opportunity to wander through this meaningful space. As we continued our journey through Theunissen, the local school caught our eye. Its expansive grounds and impressive facilities were indicative of a community that prioritises education and values its youth. As our visit drew to a close, we encountered the town's sports fields, a stark contrast to the vibrant memories they likely held. These fields, which once echoed with the laughter and cameraderie of games, now remained untouched, a poignant reminder of the shifting tides of time. Our time in Theunissen was a blend of admiration for its historical significance, a tinge of sadness for its neglected spaces, and an appreciation for the enduring spirit of its people. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #theunissen

My Favourite Adventures in Africa and The UK
My favourite adventures for the first part of the 2020's. It's a totally personal selection with no winner and it's not in any particular order of preference. There are full videos of most of the destinations, in some cases more than one, links are below. So without further fanfare, here is my Top 10.
1). Zanzibar - a stunning tropical island off the coast of Tanzania in East Africa. There are several islands in the Zanzibar Archipelago, the main island, commonly known as Zanzibar Island, is officially called Unguja, and it’s been inhabited for at least 20 000 years.
2). Matjiesfontein - visiting this green oasis in the vast emptiness of the Karoo, is to take a step back in time, to the days of Anglo-Boer War and the reign of Queen Victoria. The entire village was declared a National Monument in September 1975.
Video:
3). Victoria Falls Zimbabwe - also known as Mosi Oa Tunya, (translated as The Smoke That Thunders), on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, it's neither the widest nor the highest waterfall in the world, but it is one of the world's Big 3. David Livingstone, who viewed the falls in 1855 wrote that scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by Angels in their flight.
Video:
4). Narrowboat Life - for 4 months in 2020 we spent the summer cruising a small part of the 3500 km of the English canals. Living the narrowboat life is a slow one, best enjoyed at a maximum of 4 miles per hour, and the summer of 2020 will always occupy a very special place in my life.
Video (episode 1):
5). Africamps - late in 2020, after originally having to postpone the project due to lockdowns, we undertook an epic 5000km overland road trip over 6 weeks, visiting all 11 (at that time) Africamps across South Africa.
Video (episode 1):
6). Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park - 250km north of Upington in the Northern Cape, the Kgalagadi is real wilderness. It’s a harsh environment, and totally unforgiving, with no cell phone reception and no tar roads it really is the last remaining truly really wild part of South Africa.
Video (part 1):
7). Southern Namibia - a 10 day overland road trip. Visiting the Fish River Canyon, Luderitz and the diamond mining ghost towns of Kolmanskop (Kolmannskuppe in German) and Elizabeth Bay. From there we turned north to Sossusvlei, an incredible and special place where the Tsauchab River finds it's way to the ocean blocked by the desert sands.
Video:
8). Kruger National Park - a popular overlanding destination in South Africa, ideal for day trip visitors with easy access from several entrance gates from the far North to the extreme South of the park. We've travelled the entire 360km north to south distance a couple of times, and will no doubt do so again.
Video (part 1):
9). Gamkaskloof AKA Die Hel - located in a remote valley in the Swartberg mountains in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It was entirely cut off from the outside world until 1962, when the road; actually a steep, windy and sometimes dangerous gravel track, was built.
Video:
10). A 2000 km round trip, over 7 nights through the beautiful Wild Coast which stretches over 250km of the most stunning coastline. Bad roads and incredible scenery are the order of the day.

S1 – Ep 383 – Home – Drive-Throughs of New and Familiar Places!
As our incredible 20th trip came to an end, we embarked on the journey back home from Kwazulu-Natal, a region that had filled our days with awe and adventure for 10 unforgettable days. With nearly 1500 kilometres ahead, we split the return trip into two days, capturing picturesque drive-throughs of both new and familiar places along the way. Our overnight stay in Colesberg marked a peaceful pause before we eagerly tackled the remaining stretch of road, brimming with excitement and fond memories. We sincerely hope you've enjoyed sharing this epic journey with us as much as we cherished experiencing it. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #kwazulunatal #strand #colesberg

S1 – Ep 386 – Tesselaarsdal – Another Memorable Part of our Adventure!
Our visit to Tesselaarsdal was nothing short of breathtaking. The journey itself was a scenic delight, with lush green wheat fields and vibrant yellow canola fields stretching as far as the eye could see. The charm of the village, coupled with its rich history, left us utterly captivated. However, our plans hit a snag when heavy rain prevented us from reaching our booked accommodation. Thankfully, we were able to find a welcoming place to stay for the night in Caledon, turning an unexpected twist into another memorable part of our adventure. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #westerncape #tesselaarsdal #caledon

S1 – Ep 355 – Dealesville – Viewing the Salt Pans During an Awesome Sunset!
Our visit to Dealesville was filled with delightful surprises and warm encounters. As we embarked on our journey to the town, we were thrilled to witness a warthog crossing the road with its tail held high while running through the open field, and the sight of farming vehicles along the way added to the rural charm. Upon entering the town, we sensed a contentment and pride among the locals. On the outskirts, we discovered a stunning salt pan, initially mistaken for a dam. In our explorations, we met a gentleman who had taken it upon himself to revive the old sports complex into a beautiful wedding venue and sports facility, and he generously invited us to his renovated guest house, which we would hope to overnight at someday. The church and Voortrekker memorials provided a glimpse into the history and culture of the town. However, the presence of a military contingent left us curious as to why they were there. Departing from Dealesville, we decided to stop at the salt pans one last time. They left us in awe of their natural beauty during sunset. Inspired by the community's earnest efforts to rejuvenate and uplift their beloved town, we left the town with sweet memories of our visit. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #dealesville

S1 – Ep 381 – Utrecht – Captivated by its Beautiful and Historic Buildings!
Our visit to the charming town of Utrecht was truly captivating. Upon our arrival, we were immediately enveloped by the town's rich history, as evidenced by its beautiful and historic buildings. The town hall, an architectural masterpiece, left us in awe, while the Old Parsonage and the magnificent Dutch Reformed Church added to the town's undeniable charm. As we strolled through the town's cemetery, it became evident that Utrecht's history runs deep, with poignant monuments paying homage to its founding fathers and those who made sacrifices for its future. What made our visit even more intriguing was the proximity of the Balele Game Park. We were amazed to discover that animals could sometimes be observed in town after dark. Utrecht's blend of historical grandeur and natural wonder made us feel truly honoured to have experienced its unique and fascinating history. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #kwazulunatal #utrecht #balelegamepark

S1 – Ep 358 – Brandfort – We Found Evidence of the Pioneers of Van Life!
Our visit to Brandfort was an intriguing and diverse experience. Upon arriving in the town, we were greeted by a vibrant community engaged in playing tennis on the courts and children playing on the rugby fields. The town's history came to life as we encountered the poignant sight of a beautiful church adorned with a monument dedicated to the memory of the women, children, and farm workers who tragically lost their lives in the concentration camp nearby during the Anglo-Boer War. The presence of other notable monuments, such as the two Voortrekker monuments, the centenary celebration monument, and the 150-year monument, further enriched our understanding of the region's heritage. Despite our eagerness to explore, we encountered a slight setback when attempting to visit the concentration camp cemetery, which is now located on private property. Nevertheless, the highlight of our visit came in the form of a fascinating discovery: the home of Rear Admiral John Weston, the visionary behind Africa's first-ever aeroplane. Notably, we found intriguing evidence suggesting that Weston and his family might have been the pioneers of what we now know as Van Life, as he constructed the world's first RV and embarked on an extraordinary 18-month journey across Africa. Additionally, a remarkable but somber find during our time in Brandfort was the story of the unmarked grave of Vincent Van Gogh's youngest brother, Cornelius Van Gogh, adding yet another layer of historical significance to this remarkable town. Our time in Brandfort left us with a deep appreciation for its rich history and the exceptional individuals who have contributed to its unique tapestry. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #brandfort

S1 – Ep 354 – Hertzogville – Immediate Attention Needed to Address the Water Crisis!
Our trip to Hertzogville in the Free State was an unforgettable experience and not in the best way possible. Driving on the open roads, we were captivated by the vast expanse of flat, open space before us. Along the way, we encountered a unique method of storing maize in horizontal Silo bags, adding to the intrigue of the journey. As we arrived in Hertzogville, we spotted Cheeky Chicks, where we decided to buy a delightful lunch. The staff there told us that they have not had running water for three weeks already. However, it wasn't until we explored the town that we became aware of what a serious issue this was. The community had to resort to creative ways to collect water, such as using wheelbarrows, wheelie bins and buckets. It was truly amazing to see that houses with boreholes left hosepipes out for people to collect water. This water crisis was evident everywhere we looked. Amidst the challenges, we admired the beautiful church, of which the cornerstone was laid by the town's namesake, Prime Minister J. B. M. Hertzog himself. The trip was an eye-opening experience that left a lasting impact on us, not only for the scenic beauty but also for the pressing need for immediate attention to address the water crisis in the town. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #hertzogville

S1 – Ep 388 – Riversdale – Walking Through the Historic Old Jail!
Our trip to Riversdale was absolutely delightful. The day was stunning, and the journey to the N2 on a gravel road was a pleasant adventure in itself. Upon reaching the town, we were immediately greeted by the Voortrekker Memorial, commemorating both the centenary celebration of 1938 and the 150th celebration of 1988. While the train station was no longer in use, it was surprisingly well-preserved. We also completely unexpectedly happened upon a restored locomotive, which brough big smiles to our faces. However, the true highlight of our visit was exploring the old jail, where we bought a delicious takeaway lunch. The experience of walking through this historic site was truly incredible, making our trip to Riversdale a memorable and enjoyable one. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #westerncape #riversdale

S1 – Ep 372 – Pietermaritzburg – The Town Hall has a Breathtaking Design!
Our trip to Pietermaritzburg was an astonishing experience. We had heard about the city's stunning historic buildings, but witnessing them in person was truly unbelievable. The Town Hall left us in awe with its breathtaking design, and the old station, which we initially thought had succumbed to destruction, surprised us by standing immaculately-preserved. Walking along its platform was a delightful experience. Spotting the sign for Scottsville Racecourse excited us, prompting a visit to witness the immense stretch the horses cover during races, a truly mind-boggling sight. The following morning, amidst dealing with a flat tyre, we felt compelled to explore the old jailhouse where President Nelson Mandela had spent a night following his arrest. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #kwazulunatal #pietermaritzburg

Clifton Beach, Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town's spectacular Clifton Beach was rated as one of the Top Ten Beaches by the Discovery Travel Channel in 2003 and 2004 and has received Blue Flag status. In 2005 and 2006 it was rated by Forbes at number 8 in the Top 10 Topless beaches in the World. Clifton is neighbored by the suburbs of Camps Bay and Bantry Bay.
Llandudno Beach, Cape Town, South Africa
Llandudno is a stunning seaside hamlet on the Atlantic seaboard of the Cape Peninsula in the Western Cape, South Africa. There are no street lights, shops or commercial activities, and the town has some of the most expensive residential property in South Africa.Llandudno Beach is one of the Cape's most naturally diverse beaches, surrounded by large granite boulders and overlooked by mountains. It is a popular surfing spot, but the swimming can be treacherous, with rough seas and extremely cold water. Llandudno has lifeguards on duty during the summer season, operated by the Llandudno Surf Lifesaving club. It is also the access point for the walk to Sandy Bay, an isolated beach still popular with nudists. On 26 September 1903 the valley was declared a township and named Llandudno after the North Wales seaside resort of Llandudno, which means Parish of Saint Tudno in the Welsh language. The striking similarities between Kleinkommetjie Bay in which the valley resides and Llandudno in Wales were noted as reasons for choosing this name. LESS
Namaqua Daisies. A poem by Candass. Touwsrivier, Cape Town, South Africa.
While at Aquila Game Reserve, we met Candass Theunissen, a local poet from Touws River.
She read us one of her poems called Namaqua Daisies, from her book Deur my Oë - Through My Eyes.
I have added a transcript below in English & Afrikaans.
Oranje kombers so ver as wat kan sien
besaai is jy, gaan jul ons bedien?
met jul prag en praal
want julle is to nie in 'n kraal.
Namaqua Daisies so ver van jul huis
dankie tog maak jul gerus tuis
ons kyk en keer
sonder te oor en weer.
'n Foto of twee later
kyk net na al die skater
jy het daai effek
ek dink vir jou is ek gek
Namakwa Daisies
Orange blanket as far as can see
are you sown, are you going to serve us?
with all your splendor
for you are not in a compound.
Namakwa Daisies so far from your home
thank you, please feel free to make yourself at home
we look and turn without
having to look over and over again.
A photo or two later
just look at all the blades
you have that effect
I think I'm crazy about you.

Take a look at a few of the many great things to experience in and around Cape Town:
BLUE FLAG BEACHES
The Blue Flag program is not only an identifier of which beaches are the best to visit, but also helps to improve tourism and facilities, and boosts coastal ecosystem management and awareness. Since 1987, the international Blue Flag operation has become the most well-known eco-label of its kind, with almost 4 000 Blue Flag beaches and marinas in the world.
Highlights:
The internationally recognized award given to beaches that meet global standards of excellence
Beaches are rated yearly according to safety, amenities, cleanliness, environmental information and environmental management
South Africa boasts more than 30 Blue Flag beaches
TABLE MOUNTAIN AERIAL CABLEWAY
The ride is a gentle one, the rotating state-of-the-art cable car taking visitors from the lower station to the top in around 5 minutes. It operates seven days a week and trips occur within 10 to 15 minutes of each other. The time of the day’s last excursion varies throughout the year. Atop the mountain is a self-service buffet cafe while you can always pack a picnic and enjoy what still is part of a national park.
You will be 3,500ft above the city and here, in this unique location, you will find rock hyrax, lizards, butterflies and the odd porcupine. There is also a wide array of birdlife from eagles to sunbirds flying above great patches of fynbos, the Cape’s indigenous flora.
V&A WATERFRONT
The V&A Waterfront is one of Africa’s most visited destinations with more than 24 million visitors annually. Situated in the oldest working harbour in South Africa, with the iconic Table Mountain as its backdrop, makes the V&A Waterfront is a favourite for local and international visitors.

BOULDERS BEACH
Visiting the quirky penguins at Boulders Beach, between Simon’s Town and Cape Point, is a unique experience.
The colony, which lives incongruously in the middle of a residential area, is one of the few sites where African penguins – previously called Jackass penguins because of their braying call – can be observed at close range, as they wander freely in a protected natural environment.
SANBI – KIRSTENBOSCH GARDENS
Stroll down meandering paths that explore the meticulously crafted and maintained flora, it contains many examples of fynbos. This plant exists as a huge part of the Cape Floral Kingdom and is unique to this part of the world. Tired of walking beneath the boughs and leaves, you can always relax on the lawns and indulge in a picnic of wine and cheese. There are also two restaurants and a shop, with an indigenous nursery and a sculpture garden. Finally, the Boomslang is an amazing canopy walkway which provides visitors with brilliant vistas of the surrounding nature.
ROBBEN ISLAND MUSEUM
Now, Robben Island is a World Heritage Site and museum, offering daily tours. The tour begins at the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront with a multimedia exhibition, museum shop and restaurant, after which, guests hop onto the ferry for a scenic trip to the island. Once on Robben Island itself, the tour is guided by a former political prisoner of the island, for unique and incomparable insights into the island’s history.
GROOT CONSTANTIA: A WINE LOVER’S PARADISE
Wine lovers travel far and wide to experience Groot Constantia – South Africa’s oldest wine estate. Groot Constantia has been producing wine of outstanding quality uninterruptedly since 1685 with its award-winning wines still celebrated around the world today.
The estate’s historic Grand Constance – a sweet wine from the Napoleonic era – is a source of great pride and can be purchased at the Cloete Cellar, the only place where it was ever produced. The Cloete Cellar also hosts a tasting room and a museum where a 195-year-old bottle of Grand Constance, brought back to its birthplace, is on display. Two more tasting rooms play host to decadent chocolate and wine pairings in addition to award-winning wines on offer.
