Episode - 57 - Mokhotlong to Thaba Tseka, Lesotho 🇱🇸

Surely this was one of the best offroad rides I had. Hope you enjoy watching this episode.

In November 2021 I left Malta 🇲🇹 for a solo trip around the world on a Yamaha XT600e.
Throughout my journey, I am also visiting a number of missionary projects supported by Missio Malta which projects may be e.g. boreholes, houses, churches, medical equipment, renovations, educational programmes etc…

Lesotho, The Mountain Kingdom: Our Driving Route Changes! Where Will We Camp?

Exploring the Lesotho Mountain Kingdom. Thaba Tseka (Katse Dam) to Fouriesburg - Senqu Trip

#Lesotho #4WheelingSA #Senqu Trip #Toyota #Travel #4x4 #Travel

This is the third video of my recent trip to Lesotho. The route we took is known as the Senqu trail. The trip was organised by Halfway Toyota Fourways.

In short - what a Epic trip this was!

Day 1:

Day 2 - 3:

Day 4:

Thaba Tseka Camp to Mapoka Camp

The plan today was to drive around the Katse Dam area and the go to a campsite close to the Weir. This would involve some 4x4 tracks as well.

We drove to the Dam wall and also drove over it. Must say it is all very impressive.

The route (4x4) which was planned turned out to be a normal gravel road and we also had to turn around as they were blasting a section. We then drove to the planned campsite to find that it also does not exist anymore and that they are now mining sand at the specific spot.

We therefore had to change our plans. The next option would be the Mapoka campsite close the the Letseng mine. We drove to the mine security and got the relevant approval. From there we drove down on a mild 4x4 track to the campsite. This turned out to be a very great campsite next to a river. Their used to be ablutions, but due to floods etc they were not usable and this turned out to be a wild camp as well.

The views again was amazing. The road to the campsite also gives a bit of a 4x4 experience and has to be done in Low Range. Luckily it is not too technical and I can really recommend this camp to anyone with a 4x4 with Low Range.

Day 5:

Today will be the last day of our trip.

In order to leave the camp we had to cross a river. Luckily it was not too difficult. We just had to pack some rocks to exit the river. The water level was luckily low.

From there we took a 4x4 track out back to the mine. This route was a scenic track with a couple of river crossings.

This track was actually perfect for the last day of the trip.

Back on the main road we head towards Afriski. There was a little bit of snow, but nothing major. We quickly had a coffee at Afriski. They told us that they were expecting about 30 cm of snow in the coming days.

From there we took the road down towards the Caledonspoort border post. Going down it is a good idea to make use of engine braking, otherwise your brakes will overheat.

Back in the country we all head our separate ways home.

What a trip this was and has definitely changed how I look at 4x4 trails and routes...

Tsoelike Pass, Lesotho - Mountain Passes of South Africa

This amazing and very steep (mainly) gravel pass descends steeply to the dual bridges over the Tsoelike River. The newer on is a concrete bridge already showing signs of flood damage, whilst the older, graceful suspension bridge spans the river well above the flood peak level, still stands intact and in surprisingly good condition, considering it was built in 1930 by German missionaries.

The pass is located in the southern quartile of Lesotho, fairly close to the border with South Africa. GPS S30.024641 E28.722584

The climb out to the northern side of the valley is much steeper and peppered with tight hairpins. The photo right at the end of the video puts it all into perspective.
