We Visit the Capital of Tlaxcala, and the Pueblo Magico of Tlaxco
While visiting Puebla we took a few day trips. In this video we visit the Capital city of Mexico's smallest State, Tlaxcala, Tlaxcala. Their saying is: Sí existe, or Yes it exists - because it is so small (a little bigger than Rhode Island). We had an amazing time checking out this town, and in our eyes it should be a Pueblo Magico. They have a bull fighting ring (Plaza de Toros), and a some beautiful churches (Catedral de Tlaxcala, Capilla de Pocito, and Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Ocotlán). We just happened to visit during a festival, and saw dancers wearing masks we had only seen in museums. Afterwards we visit the Pueblo Magico of Tlaxco which is known for their wood working.

Today we're in Tlaxcala. Never heard of it, right?
Tlaxcala is the smallest state in Mexico, located just north of the state of Puebla and east of Mexico City. Some even say it's not even a state! It is totally overshadowed by it's neighbours and in some ways, ignored! Until now...
Tlaxcala has a great history with Hernan Cortes and the Spanish. It has everything you expect from Mexico from outstanding churches such as the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Ocotlan as well as one of the oldest cathedrals in Mexico, a bullring and stunning food.
Also in thet state of Tlaxcala, you can visit archeological sites, visit in firefly season, climb Mexico's MONSTER Mountain (Malinche) as well as visit countless museums.
Tlaxcala was just 'average' when I got there - I was influenced by people saying I shouldn't bother. They were wrong.

TLAXCALA Capital. A great town within a great state.
The beauty of Tlaxcala has no words that can actually describe it. The town, its people, its food, the sightseeing, so many wonderful things that this small but great state has to offer. When you get the opportunity to visit Tlaxcala, don't think twice. You will love it.
The first inhabitants of Tlaxcala lived on the gathering of wild fruits and hunting small animals. They did not have permanent homes, nor domestic animals.
Then agriculture and animal husbandry began. At first, the food reserve between sowing and harvesting was very limited, so agriculture was a secondary activity compared to gathering and hunting. But the importance of agriculture and animal husbandry lies in the fact that for the first-time man subjects the production of livelihoods to his direct control.
The arrival of the Tlaxcalans (also called Teochichimecas) to the summits of Tepeticpac was not well seen by the Olmeca-Xicalancas, who had previously settled in the region and developed the Cacaxtla lordship, from where they dominated the valley. Then they disputed the territory expelling them from Cacaxtla, Texoloc, Mixco, Xiloxochitla and Xocoyucan.
The assault on Tepeticpac occurred in the year 1384. The Culhuas of Texcoco helped the Tlaxcalans to repel the aggression, defeating the Huejotzincas. This victory helped Tlaxcala define its borders and establish good relations with its neighbors.
After this victory, the Tlaxcalans dedicated themselves to strengthening their dominion. There were four manors that made up what in the 16th century was known as the Republic of Tlaxcala. Each lordship was autonomous in matters of internal government, but in matters of defense of independence against other expansionist ethnic groups such as the Aztecs, or closer enemies such as the lordships of Cholula or Huexotzingo, the four senators met, and appointed one of them to be in command of the armies, being federated and cohesive in a single nationality.
Between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, Tlaxcala stands out among the most important cultures in Mesoamerica. Live a period of bonanza, thanks to trade with the peoples of the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, as well as with Central America. Through this trade, the Tlaxcalans obtained cocoa, wax, textiles, pigments, gold and precious stones, fine skins, exotic bird feathers, salt, etc.
The Tlaxcalans tried to speak to the arrowhead from heaven to demand freedom of trade. Moctezuma Ilhuicamina, with great pride, demanded tribute from the Republic of Tlaxcala, which meant vassalage and submission, to which the Tlaxcalans did not agree, starting a long enmity that led to a permanent campaign of warlike confrontations.
The well.
Legend has it that in 1750 a great typhus epidemic ravaged Tlaxcala and too many people died. A sick man who lived near the chapel, in his eagerness to survive, recalled that a neighbor had a miraculous image of Christ crucified and begged his relatives to go with him so that he could lend them to the Lord and save him from that disease. that Christ kept death away or helped to receive it in peace. Since then this image is known as the lord of the neighbor and the chapel is called the good neighbor.

AMAZING FIREFLY SANCTUARY [THOUSANDS] | TLAXCALA MEXICO
And the gold medal of 2017 goes to!
Visiting the Firefly sanctuary near Nanacamilpa, Tlaxcala, Mexico was completely unbelievable. Thousands of them, and spinning and swirling around us and into the tree tops. Lighting up IN SYNC with each other like a coordinated light show. It didn't feel like planet earth, it felt like I stood up to fast and was seeing stars, it felt like I stepped into fantasy.
I drove 2 hours to stay at the eco lodge Piedra Canteada, deep in the pine forests of Oyamel. These insects show their faces for just a month every year to breed. This story might sound a little bit like the Monarch Butterfly Migration that we saw earlier in the year, but instead of flying from Canada, the fireflies are here all year round; you just can't see them.
The firefly we know, isn't even a fly, it's a beetle. All beetles have a larval stage called a grub, and fireflies live in the dirt without wings for 20 months before erupting out of a pupae (a bit like a cocoon) for one single month to have a giant sex party.
This show is easily one of the top 5 most amazing natural phenomena I have seen so far in my travels, and I can't believe it's not more popular. Bioluminescence continues to blow my mind. Glowing plankton, fireflies, mushrooms... I think it is incredible.
Enjoy this quick video of the Firefly Sanctuary in Tlaxcala, I don't think anyone has filmed it yet on Youtube. I needed special equipment, and It was a bit tricky to capture this for you guys.

TLAXCALA Mexico. The great state.
This is just the tip of the iceberg in a series of videos that I'll bring right to you. Tlaxcala is the smallest state in Mexico. However, its greatness goes way beyond its size. Stayed tunes for the upcoming videos, where I'll be taking you to Tlaxco, magic town and its naturally formed labyrinth, Nanacamilpa and its beautiful forest to experiment the dance of the fireflies. The archaeological area of Tecoaque with its unusual cilindric piramid. Apizaco, the great urban town and its great cathedral. Calpulalpan and its surroundings. and of course Tlaxcala capital. its most iconic places and monuments.

Tlaxcala, Mexico - Unravel Travel TV
There are over a thousand archeological sites in the state of Tlaxcala, Mexico but only seven are fully excavated and open to the public. The two most important are Xochitécatl and Cacaxtla. It is believed that Xochitécatl, located on the peak of an extinct volcano, had its apogee between the years 600-800 AD, making it one of the oldest settlements in the valley. It was a strategic point as it dominated the valley from on high, and this is probably why it became the regional capital. The remains comprise four monuments, including the Pyramid of the Flower, which has the largest base of all the pre-Hispanic constructions; and the Spiral Construction, which is a circular pyramid. In 1975 some local farmers from San Miguel del Milagro came across the face of a pre-Hispanic figure on a mural that they uncovered as they were working the soil. Once they had informed the authorities it didn't take long for archeologists to flock to the spot, though it wasn't fully excavated until 1980. The site is in fact a superb example of the construction system used by the ancients, who built a new building over an old one, as if they were onion layers. What we see now are the superimposed ruins, decorated with murals.
The mainly Catholic and colonial architecture of Tlaxcala does honor to the important role it played in New Spain, as can be seen by the extraordinary collection of Baroque and Churrigueresque buildings dating from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. In the city center the Plaza de la Constitución is the central square, with an arcade of 28 arches along one side. North of the plaza stand the Palacio de Gobierno and the Palacio Municipal, decorated with murals by the Tlaxcala-born Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin, which narrate the history of the state from the pre-Hispanic period up to the present day. To one side of these is the San José parish church, built between the 17th and 18th centuries, and the majestic Palace of Justice, formerly the Royal Chapel, which is said to have been the first chapel built in the Americas. More impressive still is the former monastery of San Francisco de Nuestra Señora de la Ascunción, erected between 1537 and 1540, which gives no hint of its architectural magnificence with its austere façade. It is not until you step inside that you discover the splendid wooden coffered ceiling, which reveals a Mudejar influence. To the southeast of the Plaza de la Constitución, right beside the oldest bullring in the country, stands the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption of Tlaxcala, which was previously a Franciscan monastery, built between 1537 and 1540. The façade has a Renaissance sobriety about it, while inside there is a Mudejar ceiling and a chapel with altarpieces and paintings. At one corner of the atrium, there is an open chapel in a Neo-Gothic style.
The people of this region are joyful by nature and don't miss any opportunity for a wild party. This may be the reason the Tlaxcalatecos -- as they are called -- feel so much love and pride for their fiestas and traditions. The fiestas mostly involve processions through streets decorated with garlands and cut paper, food and craft stalls, Catholic ceremonies and songs at dawn, always accompanied by the tolling of bells, drinking and music from the teponaxtle, the chirimía and the wind instruments that play in the church squares. The churches are dressed up with great arches of flowers and seeds, both inside and on their façades, as well as with carpets made from colored sawdust that are placed in the atriums. The most well-known of these festivities are those held in Huamantla on August 14 and 15, during the night when no-one sleeps. These carpets, which are a perfect example of ephemeral art, can measure up to four miles in length and are laid out in the streets to make way for the Virgin of Charity, who is carried on bearers' shoulders from house to house during the night. On the Saturday following the night when no-one sleeps the main streets of Huamantla are closed from midday and bullfighting bulls are let loose to chase anyone who dares to get in their way. This is known as the Huamantlada. One of the most interesting traditions is that of the danzantes del carnaval (Carnival dancers). Dressed in local attire and masks, the dancers move from village to village displaying their dances. Though the dances have a significant religious component, they are mainly satirical, and were created by the indigenous people in imitation of what they observed in the Spanish dances. The intention is usually to mock the customs of the upper classes.

ABOUT US
We’re Sean and Elliot, two thirty-something former musical theatre actors and restaurant industry veterans with a passion for food and travel.
In 2015 we got married, said goodbye to our acting ambitions, quit our day jobs, and decided to spend our honeymoon on a one-year Working Holiday Visa backpacking throughout New Zealand. That once-in-a-lifetime experience changed our perspective and opened us up to the possibility of long-term travel.
2020 was a brutal year for us, but it gave us the opportunity to rethink our priorities and commit ourselves to our dream of traveling the world together. So in August of 2021, we sold all of our stuff and bought a one-way ticket to Mexico with the plan to travel for as long as we possibly can.
