Places to see in ( Tavistock - UK )

Places to see in ( Tavistock - UK )

Tavistock is an ancient stannary and market town within West Devon, England. Tavistock is situated on the River Tavy from which its name derives. Tavistock traces its recorded history back to at least AD 961 when Tavistock Abbey, whose ruins lie in the centre of the town, was founded. Its most famous son is Sir Francis Drake.

Tavistock lies on the edge of Dartmoor, around 24 kilometres (14.9 mi) north of Plymouth on the A386, The town of Tavistock is centred on the paved amenity of Bedford Square, around which are found St. Eustachius' Church and the Abbey ruins, to the west, the Grade 2-listed Town Hall, the disused former Guildhall/magistrates' court buildings, and Pannier Market buildings behind the Town Hall. Abbey Bridge crosses the River Tavy to the south, while West Street and Duke Street, on either side of the north end of the square, form the main shopping areas, with the indoor market running behind Duke Street.

Plymouth Road, the A386 heading west from the centre of the square, is home to much of the town's tourist trade, with many hotels and bed and breakfast establishments, as well as the town's bus station. Between Plymouth Road and the Tavy is the park, known locally as the Meadows, along with car parks, the Wharf theatre, cinema and culture centre, and a public recreation pool. West of the Meadows are found the substantial playing fields and buildings of Tavistock College, reached by an underpass below the A386. Further south along the Plymouth Road/A386 lie industrial estates, supermarkets and other large retail outlets. To the north and east of town lies Whitchurch Down, where Dartmoor begins immediately.

Tavistock is a small market town, providing shopping and entertainment for its residents, many small outlying villages and the local farming community. It is a centre for the West Devon and Dartmoor tourist trade.

( Tavistock - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Tavistock . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Tavistock - UK

The BEST Places to Visit in DEVON - Dartmoor & Old Church at Brentor, Tavistock

The BEST Places in DEVON - A day Out at Dartmoor to visit the Old Church at Brentor, near Tavistock and Plymouth is fun! It's also FREE.

If you're visiting Devon on holiday, why not check out Dartmoor? Brentor Church on Dartmoor is located on top of a Tor (small mountain) and is amazing to see! A great morning or afternoons walk to take in the amazing scenery.

This ancient monument is perched on top of a cliff on Dartmoor which is close to the market town of #Tavistock near Plymouth in Devon. We had a great day out on a Sunny Autumnal day. The St Michael de Rupe Church is nearly 1000 years old. Can you just imagine! What did the world even look like then!

It's well worth going to see this famous place and you won't be disappointed, there is free parking right next to the entrance. A good run out for the dog and children who had a great time. Check out the trees, blown over by the wind. Believe me when I say that we can experience four seasons in a day here on #Dartmoor.

If you don't know what 'The Moors' are they are natural grasslands that are quite high up and exposed. They are both beautiful and rugged. There have been lots of books, movies and poems about Dartmoor, Exmoor, Yorkshire Moors and many many more. My favourites among them are below:

✅Hound of the Baskervilles -
✅American Werewolf in London -
✅#Warhorse -

Check them out and you will see the true beauty!

Filming Equipment & Post Production / Editing:

✅MacBook Pro (Late 2015) -
✅iMovie Editing Software -
✅DJI Osmo Pocket -
✅GoPro Session 5 Camera -
✅Apple iPhone 11 Pro -

For this filming (and dreadful windy sound when we were outside) we used an iPhone 11 Pro (in Green if you want to know) and a DJI Osmo Pocket.

Dartmoor Guide, Devon

Tavistock Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Devon, and around 15 miles north of Plymouth, is the town of Tavistock.

In the 10th century, Tavistock Abbey was founded. In 997, after the Battle of Lydford, Vikings looted and burned the abbey. The abbey church was rebuilt, but was eventually demolished in 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

In 1105 a market charter was granted to Tavistock by Henry I. Historical industries in the town have included wool and copper & tin mining. In 1305 Edward I established the Stannary Charter, which made Tavistock, Ashburton and Chagford as stannary towns, with a monopoly on all tin mining in Devon. Plympton was later added in 1328.

In circa 1540 (the date is disputed as it was not officially recorded) Francis Drake was born in Tavistock. In 1577 Queen Elizabeth I sent Drake on an expedition against the Spanish along the Pacific coast of the Americas. He set sail from Plymouth in his ship, named Pelican, alongside four other vessels. During the voyage his ship was renamed Golden Hind, in reference to the female deer that appeared on the coat of arms of Christopher Hatton, one of the sponsors of the expedition. In 1580 Drake landed back in Plymouth, becoming the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe. Drake was called upon again in 1588, again from Plymouth, where he defeated the Spanish Armada. The invading ships were forced to retreat east across the English Channel, then up the North Sea and down the Atlantic.

During the 19th century Tavistock's mining industry was expanded. The completion of the Tavistock Canal in 1817 provided a new means for transportation. Additionally three iron foundries opened in the town around this period. The town centre underwent significant redevelopment during the Victorian era courtesy of the Dukes of Bedford. The mining industry declined during the latter half of the 19th century, and with it came the closure of the Tavistock Canal. In 1933 the canal was purchased and converted into a hydroelectric power plant.

In 1859 a railway station opened in Tavistock. This was followed, in 1890, by a second, which became known as Tavistock North, and the original was renamed Tavistock South. Whilst in operation, these provided direct links to Plymouth and Launceston. Both stations were closed in the 1960s as part of the Beeching cuts - where over 2000 stations in the UK were closed in a controversial move to encourage motorway travel. Today, public transport to Tavistock consists principally of direct bus services to and from Plymouth and Okehampton.

In 2005 Tavistock was voted Best Market Town in England.
