Ouarzazate’s main historical attraction is the Taourirt Kasbah. Located on the eastern edge of the city, its fortified façade and densely packed red clay buildings were occupied by members of the El Glaoui dynasty, who controlled the city in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Although it is now partly ruined, sections of the 300-room palace have been restored and can be explored on foot. Discover maze-like passageways, steep steps and dizzying ramparts in addition to recognizable features such as the harem quarters and palace kitchens. In some rooms, traces of the original stucco and woven reed ceilings remain. On the battlements, fabulous citadel and Atlas Mountains views await. The Kasbah is open every day from 8 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and entry costs 10 dirhams (about $1) per adult..

Kasbah Taourirt - Ouarzazate - Morocco

Ouarzazate ورزازات‎ ⵡⴰⵔ ⵣⴰⵣⴰⵝ nicknamed The door of the desert, is a city and capital of Ouarzazate Province in Drâa-Tafilalet region of south-central Morocco. Ouarzazate is at an elevation of 1,160 metres (3,810 ft) in the middle of a bare plateau south of the High Atlas Mountains, with a desert to the city's south.

Berber-speakers make up the majority of the town's inhabitants, who were responsible for the creation of many of the prominent kasbahs (locally referred to as: iɣeṛman). Ouarzazate is a primary tourist destination in Morocco for holidays, as well as a starting point for excursions into and across the Draa Valley and the desert. Aït Benhaddou (a fortified village) west of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Ouarzazate area is a noted film-making location, with Morocco's biggest studios inviting many international companies to work here. Films such as Lawrence of Arabia (1962), The Man Who Would Be King (1975), The Living Daylights (1987), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), The Mummy (1999), Gladiator (2000), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), Kundun (1997), Legionnaire (1998), Hanna (2011), The Hills Have Eyes (2006), and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011) were shot here, as was part of the TV series Game of Thrones.

The nearby Ouarzazate solar power station, co-funded by the Arab League, was connected to the Moroccan power grid in February 2016.

The kasbah-town of Aït Benhaddou is nearby. Many excursions through the valley of the Draa River into the Sahara start from the city. These include trips to Zagora, an oasis town surrounded by palm tree plantations and a departure point for camel trains to Timbuktu, a journey that would take about 52 days. These days the border to Algeria is closed, stopping the Timbuktu route.

The city was part of the route of the 2006 and 2007 Dakar Rally.

The Taourirt Kasbah is an important historical building in Ouarzazate, it shows the best of Kasbah architecture right in the heart of the city, and along history it played a major military and commercial role, today it is a monument where cultural activities and seminars are held.
With almost 300 rooms and a true maze of passageways, steps and keylock doors, it’s easy to feel lost within this immense structure.
The kasbah is classified as a Heritage of a human world by UNESCO.

The Kasbah is featured on the back side of an old 50 dirham.

This video will show you Kasbah Amridil which is one of Morocco’s grandest and best preserved Kasbahs. It once appeared on Morocco 50 Dirham bill. The Kasbah is located 30 minutes from Ouarzazate and 4 hours from Marrakech. Driving along the famous “Road of One Thousand Kasbahs”, you’ll enjoy the spectacular view of a vast valley dotted with small oases and hundreds of ancient fortifications.
Kasbah Amridil was built in the 17th-century and its living museum with original olive oil maker, cheese maker, bread ovens etc that will give you a glimpse of traditional kasbah life.
It opens 7 days a week from 8 am to 7pm. The average time visiting it is approximately 1 hour.
