Prejmer Fortress: Romania's Hidden Tourist Gem
The Prejmer Fortress that houses the Fortified Church in the town is one of the best preserved fortifications in Europe, but also the oldest historical monument in Brasov. It is among the few that were not crushed by the Communists, but on the contrary. Even Nicolae Ceausescu gave money for its restoration.
The fortress was built in 1211 by the Teutonic Knights, in Gothic style and is listed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. In order to defend themselves against the Turkish invasions, the inhabitants of the settlement, originally from Saxony, built the walls of the Peasant Fortress in the 15th century.
The fortress has the shape of a circle that surrounds the Evangelical Church, 12 meters high walls and 3-4 meters thick. It was attacked 50 times by the Turks. It is said that the fortress fell once in the hands of the enemies, but only because they had come as friends, and after entering the city they became conquerors. Prejmer Fortress is the only tourist destination in Romania that has received three stars in the Michelin Green Guide for tourism.

The coolest places in Europe, are not only in the west but here in the central-east too. The best time to visit Romania is all year round because of our huge tourist potential.

To make the transition from the military and civil to the ecclesiastical Gothic, we will have to lean on a style of chivalrous rural construction that still exists isolated in the village communities of Austria, Germany, and France: the fortified church.
This style of construction appears in the southern areas of Transylvania from the need of the Saxon communities to defend themselves from the Ottomans who were a permanent danger to them.
Since the construction of a stone edifice required the efforts of all community members, they decided to fortify the churches they needed anyway. Thus, walls, bastions, and towers appeared around the churches. In some situations, the walls of the enclosure doubled so that the guard road passed through the inside of the wall provided with shooting and throwing mouths, they built rooms, one for each family in the village, where they kept supplies, weapons, and ammunition to last as long as possible more in case of siege. In this sense, the best examples are those from Prejmer and Harman.
The large number of fortified churches concentrated in the southern area but also in the interior of Transylvania gives church architecture a particular aspect and illustrates the extent of this phenomenon. Among the fortified churches, I recommend you visit the ones in:
Prejmer is the most complete; Harman (a beautiful mural painting restored in one of the towers), Malancrav (the only one with a mural painting on the entire surface of the choir depicting biblical scenes and on the north wall), Biertan (the episcopal residence fortified with 3 rows of walls, having a matrimonial prison, tower of slaninii and a door of the sacristy awarded in Paris) and Axente Sever a splendor with a fabulous tower from where you can see the surroundings superbly and with a museum that will help you understand a lot about the Saxons.

The fortified church is an innovation of the Transylvanian Saxons forced to defend themselves against the attacks of the Tatars and later the Turks. Their communities needed both a church and a defensive fortress. As the construction of both required great expenses and efforts that the communities could not afford, they decided to build a church that they would surround with walls and inside which they would set up rooms for each family in the village where they could live during the sieges. This is how the fortified churches were born, and here I present the most complete of them.

Explore a fantastic fortified church founded by the Teutonic Knights in now Transylvania in Romania. The Ottomans tried to destroy the church over 50 times without success all the while destroying the town. The church is heavily fortified and we will be able to see inside where 4 stories of living and storage accommodation inside the church protected people and goods. The site is in pristine condition having been restored during Communist times

Prejmer Fortified Church - A UNESCO Heritage Site
A Roman Catholic Church turned Lutheran after Reformation, Prejmer Fortified Church was founded by the Germanic Teutonic Knights who started the construction in 1218, in Gothic style. Their work was completed in 1240 by the Cistercians, who took over after their expulsion in 1225.
The Church was strongly fortified in the 15th and 16th century and remained in one piece despite the numerous attacks of the invaders coming from Buzau Pass. Its 270 rooms found in the 5m-thick circular wall could sheltered up to 1600 villagers against an attack.
Prejmer is one of the 7 villages with fortified churches in Transylvania listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

To make the transition from the military and civil to the ecclesiastical Gothic, we will have to lean on a style of chivalrous rural construction that still exists isolated in the village communities of Austria, Germany, and France: the fortified church.
This style of construction appears in the southern areas of Transylvania from the need of the Saxon communities to defend themselves from the Ottomans who were a permanent danger to them.
Since the construction of a stone edifice required the efforts of all community members, they decided to fortify the churches they needed anyway. Thus, walls, bastions, and towers appeared around the churches. In some situations, the walls of the enclosure doubled so that the guard road passed through the inside of the wall provided with shooting and throwing mouths, they built rooms, one for each family in the village, where they kept supplies, weapons, and ammunition to last as long as possible more in case of siege. In this sense, the best examples are those from Prejmer and Harman.
The large number of fortified churches concentrated in the southern area but also in the interior of Transylvania gives church architecture a particular aspect and illustrates the extent of this phenomenon. Among the fortified churches, I recommend you visit the ones in:
Prejmer is the most complete; Harman (a beautiful mural painting restored in one of the towers), Malancrav (the only one with a mural painting on the entire surface of the choir depicting biblical scenes and on the north wall), Biertan (the episcopal residence fortified with 3 rows of walls, having a matrimonial prison, tower of slaninii and a door of the sacristy awarded in Paris) and Axente Sever a splendor with a fabulous tower from where you can see the surroundings superbly and with a museum that will help you understand a lot about the Saxons.
