Spending $20 at a Turkmenistan Market
Ashgabat Turkmenistan is a strange place. I have never seen so much gold and marble in my life, but the streets seemed empty. In this Turkmenistan travel vlog, I join my friend Lexie Alford and make a trip to a local Turkmen market called the Russian Bazaar. Here, we tried street food, interacted with the locals, and witnessed some real culture.
I say real culture, because Turkmenistan is known as the North Korea of Central Asia. The president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow has a tight grip on the country, and it's very hard to get off the normal tourist path.
Beside our hotel was a local market, we asked our guide if we could visit, and he said if we really wanted to we could, but not to bring a camera because of police. The locals had been so nice to us, so thought we would take a small chance.
One more thing to note. After I posted the first Turkmenistan travel vlog in Ashgabat, I had said that we had our US dollars exchanged to Turkmen Manat at 1 to 13. Locals commented that it's actually suppose to be 1 to 20. It's funny though, from an atm it's 1 to 3.5.
Very happy we got our money on the black market.

An ancient city of the Sassanid era, located on the territory of modern Turkmenistan. It is located at the foot of three mountains on the outskirts of the Kara-Kum desert. It was located in the northern part of the medieval region called Great Khorasan. It served as a border city and was part of the border chain of cities created by the rulers of ancient Iran to prevent the raids of barbarians from Inner Asia. The entire region, including Serakhs and Nisa, was designated in Turkish sources as Atak.
TURKMENISTAN Night Train | Turkmenabat to Ashgabat Travel
This is what taking a night train is like in Turkmenistan! After crossing the border from Uzbekistan, we took the 27 Manat night train from Turkmenabat to the capital city, Ashgabat.
At the current black market exchange rates in September 2018, 19 Manat to the $US, the train cost $1.40 for a bed in a sleeper compartment for 6 people.
This was the beginning of an incredible journey across Turkmenistan. We only had a 5 day transit visa as were travelling independently, so unfortunately only got a brief glimpse of this fascinating country.

🇹🇲 Balkanabat - peaceful city in Balkan Province, Turkmenistan 🇹🇲
Balkanabat is a city in western Turkmenistan and the capital of Balkan Province, the largest province in the country.
Balkanabat lies at the foot of the Balkan Daglary mountain range. Balkanabat is about 450 km west of Ashgabat and 160 km east of the port city of Turkmenbashi.
The town was founded in 1933 as Neftedag, meaning Oil Mountain, as a settlement along one of the stations of Trans-Caspian Railway. In 1946, when it was transformed into a city, it was renamed Nebit-Dag.
A large monument in the far eastern end Monument to the Desert Explorers depicts a camel, Ivan Gubkin and peers, struggling to walk through the windy desert of Karakum while exploring petroleum. Nebit Dag was renamed to Balkanabat in 2001.
