In our experience, Brno is definitely worth spending a day or two. There is enough to do in and around the city for a great weekend trip. Since it's relatively close to Prague, Vienna, and Bratislava, you can easily include a visit to Brno while on a trip to any of those other wonderful cities

What are trains like in Czechia? 🇨🇿 | Cesky Krumlov to Ceske Budejovice by train (Czech Republic)
Cesky Krumlov to Ceske Budejovice by train? The best way to travel between the two. But what are trains like in Czechia? How is the Czech Republic when it comes to trains?
Would you expect modern luxurious trains or some old ones with that Eastern European vibe (despite the fact Czechia is a Central European country - don't listen to the media)? How was the ride? What did I find on the toilet floor? All the answers, and even more, in today's episode.
As an extra info, the fastest way from Ceske Budejovice to Cesky Krumlov (or the other way around) is by bus or car - I have to admit that. But I always choose to go by train, when the option exists, because it's just way more pleasant, beautiful and... I just love trains so much. Expect to pay around 2 euros/USD for a 45 minutes ride. Trains in Czechia are especially cheap, if you come from North America, Western Europe, etc.
Use this website ( to buy your tickets. It's way better than any other providers on or offline. They even have an app, so you can have all your tickets saved there. And nope, this is not an ad. I just try to make your Czech trip easier.

České dráhy (ČD) or Czech Railways is the main railway operator in the Czech Republic. In 2010 its consolidated revenues reached CZK 41.0 billion (€1.6bn, $2.1bn). Revenues from passenger transport amounted to CZK 18.7 billion (65% transfer payments from the government, 25% intra-state transport, 10% international transport), revenues from freight transport operated by subsidiary ČD Cargo amounted to CZK 11.8 billion, revenues from traffic control invoiced to state-owned railway infrastructure operator SŽDC amounted to CZK 5.2 billion. With thirty-eight thousand employees ČD Group is the largest Czech company by the number of employees.
The company was established in 1993, after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia as a successor of the Czechoslovak State Railways. It is a member of the International Railway Union (UIC Country Code for Czech Republic is 54), Community of European Railways and the Organization for Railways Cooperation (Asia and Europe).
Until 1 July 2008, České dráhy was the biggest employer in the Czech Republic. After experiencing regular losses and requiring government subsidies, the railway reported its first ever profit in 2007 although it receives government subsidies. Attempts to make it more efficient are currently ongoing and a recent plan to move passenger transport to an independent subsidiary was approved by the Czech government in January 2008.
ČD operates trains; fixed infrastructure (such as tracks) is managed by SŽDC. In December 2010, the Czech government proposed bringing SŽDC and ČD together in a single holding company. The government has also changed the subsidies available to ČD and SŽDC.
ČD Cargo, the cargo subsidiary, mainly transports raw materials, intermediate goods and containers. As of 2009, it is ranked in the top five largest railway cargo operators in Europe.

Czech Republic: Praha-Smichov, a railway wheel tapper checks train wheels in the station sidings
Czech Republic: Praha-Smichov, a railway wheel tapper checks train wheels in the station sidings.
Clip recorded 10th July 2010.
A wheel tapper is a railway worker employed to check the integrity of train wheels and that axle boxes are not overheating.
Typically employed at large railway stations and in goods yards, they tap wheels with a long-handled hammer and listen to the sound made to determine the integrity of the wheel; cracked wheels, like cracked bells, do not sound the same as their intact counterparts. They also check that the axle boxes are not overly hot by using the back of their hand.
Although wheeltappers still operate in some eastern European countries, in western nations where modern planned maintenance procedures and line-side defect detectors, such as hot box detectors, have mostly obviated the need for the wheel-tapper, the job is mostly associated with the steam age.
Wheeltappers were vital to the smooth running of the railways as a cracked wheel or overheated axle bearing would lead to delays and the loss of revenue. These were particularly common in the 19th century, when axle bearings were lubricated by grease. Equally, in this period, metallurgy was a more haphazard science and thus it was impossible to test steel wheels for cracks, thus the role of the wheeltapper was of crucial importance.

Praha-Smíchov railway station (Czech: Nádraží Praha-Smíchov, [ˈsmiːxof]) is a major railway station in Prague, Czech Republic, located in Smíchov, in the south-west of the city. It serves as a major railway station on the Czech national rail network, and is connected to the rest of Prague by its metro station of the same name and numerous tram routes which stop on Nádražní street outside the station. It is also a major bus terminus for lines going to the south and southwest of Prague and beyond. In 2009 the station served almost 4 million people.[1]
The station was opened in 1862 as the terminus of the line linking Prague to Plzeň, operated by Česká Západní Dráha (Czech Western Railway). In 1872 and 1873, two more lines were built to the station, one from Hostivice and the other from Rudná. The present station building was built between 1953 and 1956 and designed by architects Jan Zázvorka and Ladislav Žák.
All trains going from Prague towards Plzeň and Písek pass through Smíchov as the first stop after the more central hub, Praha hlavní nádraží. It is also used as a terminus for inter-regional trains serving cities in the east of the Czech Republic, which pass first through hlavní nádraží and terminate at Smíchov. The station has a separate area named Praha-Smíchov severní nástupiště (Praha-Smichov northern platforms) which is technically a separate station, though it is often shown on abridged timetables as Praha-Smíchov. These platforms serve the Prague Semmering line to Hostivice, now integrated into Esko Prague system as line S65. The main station is further served by lines S6 and S7 of the Esko system.
