Places to see in ( Ipswich - UK )

Places to see in ( Ipswich - UK )

Ipswich is the county town of Suffolk, England, located on the estuary of the River Orwell, about 60 miles north east of London. Ipswich has been continuously occupied since the Saxon period, and its port has been one of England's most important for the whole of its history.

Ipswich is a non-metropolitan district. The urban development of Ipswich overspills the borough boundaries significantly, with 75% of the town's population living within the borough at the time of the 2011 Census, when it was the fourth-largest urban area in the United Kingdom's East of England region, and the 42nd largest urban area in England and Wales.

The Ipswich docks area (the waterfront) is now devoted primarily to leisure use and includes extensive recent development of residential apartment blocks and a university campus. Holywells is the area around Holywells Park, a 67-acre (27 ha) public park situated near the docks, and the subject of a painting by Thomas Gainsborough. Chantry is a housing estate and park to the town's south-west.

Districts outside the town centre include Bixley Farm, Broke Hall, California, Castle Hill, The Dales, Gainsborough, Greenwich, Kesgrave (which is actually a separate town situated in Suffolk Coastal District), Maidenhall, Pinewood, Priory Heath, Racecourse, Ravenswood (built on a former airfield), Rose Hill, Rushmere, Springvale, St Margarets, Stoke, Warren Heath, Westbourne, Whitehouse and Whitton. To the east of the town is Trinity Park near Bucklesham the home of the annual Suffolk Show, a typical county show.

Ipswich's sole professional association football club is Ipswich Town, which was established in 1878 and, as of 2015, plays in the second-tier Football League Championship at the 30,300-capacity Portman Road stadium.

Places to see in ( Tenbury Wells - UK )

Places to see in ( Tenbury Wells - UK )

Tenbury Wells is a market town and civil parish in the north-western extremity of the Malvern Hills District of Worcestershire, England, which at the 2011 census had a population of 3,777. Tenbury Wells lies on the south bank of the River Teme, which forms the border between Shropshire and Worcestershire. It is in the north-west of the Malvern Hills District. The settlement of Burford in Shropshire lies on the north bank of the river.

From 1894 to 1974, it was a rural district, comprising itself and villages such as Stoke Bliss, Eastham and Rochford. From 1974 Tenbury was in the District of Leominster until it became part Malvern Hills District when Leominster District Council was taken over by Herefordshire Council in April 1998. The history of Tenbury Wells extends as far back as the Iron Age. The town is often thought of as the home to the Castle Tump, but this is now in Burford, Shropshire due to boundary changes. Though the Tump, possibly the remains of an early Norman motte and bailey castle, can be seen from the main road (A456) there are no visible remains of the castle that was constructed to defend and control the original River Teme crossing. It has also been described as ... the remains of an 11th century Norman Castle.

Tenbury was in the upper division of Doddingtree Hundred. Originally named Temettebury, the town was granted a Royal Charter to hold a market in 1249. Over time, the name changed to Tenbury, and then added the Wells following the discovery of mineral springs and wells in the town in the 1840s. The name of the railway station, which was on the now-defunct Tenbury & Bewdley Railway, was changed in 1912, in an attempt to publicise the mineral water being produced from the wells around the town.

One notable architectural feature in the town is the unique (often described as Chinese-Gothic) Pump Rooms, designed by James Cranston in the 1860s, to house baths where the mineral water was available. Other notable structures in Tenbury include the parish church of St Mary with a Norman tower, and a number of monuments. The church was essential rebuilt by Henry Woodyer between 1864 and 1865. The part-medieval bridge over the River Teme, linking Tenbury to Burford, Shropshire was rebuilt by Thomas Telford following flood damage in 1795. The Grade II-listed Eastham bridge dramatically collapsed into the River Teme on 24 May 2016. There were no reports of any casualties.

The Victorian Workhouse, designed by George Wilkinson, was used as the local Council Buildings from 1937 to the early 21st century and is currently being converted into residential housing. The Victorian infirmary behind the workhouse was demolished to create car parking for a new large Tesco Superstore, which opened on 27 April 2017. Tenbury was also known as the town in the orchard due to the large numbers of fruit orchards of apple trees and also pears, quince and plum trees, in the immediate vicinity of the town. This heritage is revisited every October during the Tenbury Applefest.

Let's Visit - Bury St Edmunds #shorts

To kick off Let's Visit 2022, I visit Bury St Edmunds.

Places to see in ( Stowmarket - UK )

Places to see in ( Stowmarket - UK )

Stowmarket is a small market town situated in Suffolk, England, on the busy A14 trunk road between Bury St Edmunds to the west and Ipswich to the southeast. The town of Stowmarket is on the main railway line between London and Norwich, and lies on the River Gipping, which is joined by its tributary, the River Rat, to the south of the town.

The town of Stowmarket takes its name from the Old English word stōw meaning principal place, and was granted a market charter in 1347 by Edward III. A bi-weekly market is still held there today on Thursday and Saturday. The church of St Peter and St Mary is in the Decorated style and dates to the 14th century. The 16th-century former vicarage, now the town council offices and register office, has associations with John Milton; Milton’s Tree in its grounds is believed to be an offshoot of one of the many trees he planted there.

Haughley Park is an historical house of significance listed in the English Heritage Register. It is a large red brick country house built in about 1620 for the Sulyard family who were very prominent landowners in this area. Opened in 1967, the Museum of East Anglian Life occupies a 70-acre (28 ha) site close to the town centre. The Karnser is a raised pavement in Station Road West, next to the church. The name is the East Anglian dialect word caunsey, meaning a causey (causeway).

In the 18th century the Gipping was made navigable between Stowmarket and Ipswich by a series of locks. The newly created canal was known as the Ipswich and Stowmarket Navigation. Stowmarket railway station is on the Great Eastern Main Line from London Liverpool Street to Norwich. It is also the junction of the line to Bury St Edmunds. It is served by Abellio Greater Anglia. Suffolk County Council has built a road from the Central Roundabout, a short distance to the east of Stowmarket, to Gipping Way in central Stowmarket at a cost of £21 million.

Stowmarket has held an annual carnival for well over 50 years in the recreation park featuring a fun fair, fireworks, a procession through the town and local entertainment. Stowmarket also plays host to the music festival Stow-Fest, a live music open-air event that takes place annually at Chilton Fields in the North of Stowmarket. Stowmarket has a maritime climate type as is typical for the bulk of the British Isles. Wattisham is the nearest official weather station, about 4 miles south south west of Stowmarket Town centre.

The former Little Chef restaurant at Haughley Park Services in Stowmarket, Suffolk

We drove past the old Little Chef on what was once the A14 while on a trip to Suffolk in early December 2022.

We used to pass by the roadside restaurant a fair bit on our visits to Ipswich back in the noughties, that was until the A14 at Haughley Park Services was bypassed in 2008.

This Little Chef restaurant soldiered on until it was closed in September 2012.

Needham Market | Bosmere Anderson Lake | church st John | dji mini 2 | England 2021 Cinematic

#NEEDHAM#MARKET#LAKE#DJI#MAVIC MINI 2#ENGLAND#BOSMERE#
Hello everyone, today we will see another beautiful village in England, Needham Market.Below short description

Church st John -needham Market is a busy little town, more a large village really, just off of the A14. It is close enough to Ipswich and Stowmarket for the big supermarket chains to have ignored it, and so it still has a good selection of local shops, including a decent art supplies shop, as well as six pubs. I like it a lot for this.
St John the Baptist is quite different from any other church in Suffolk. It has an urban setting on the main street, hemmed in by old buildings on three sides. But this is no grand town church, and you might not even notice it if it wasn't for the curious little spire on the porch, and the high clerestory like the bridge of a ship. Indeed, this church was just a chapel of ease to Barking until 1901. It has no churchyard, and there is no tower.

It was built during the second half of the 15th century, and set in the expanse of restored knapped flint is an inscription carved in stone: Pray we all for grace, for he yt hav holpe ys place God reward he for her ded & hev'n may be her meed. There is an archway in the north east buttress. This was to allow the Corpus Christi procession to encircle the church without leaving consecrated ground.

St John the Baptist underwent several massive restorations in the late 19th century, but it is still a goal for church explorers seeking the finest that the late medieval period has to offer, because this is one of the great Suffolk church interiors. You step inside, and find yourself far beneath a roof which seems impossible. To look up into his extraordinary double hammerbeam roof is like looking down into the hull of a ship, and a feeling of vertigo would be completely understandable. Cautley thought it had no equal in all of England.
Needham Lake -Needham Lake is a popular countryside attraction centred around a flooded gravel pit close to Needham Market. The Lake is home to a variety of wildlife with numerous well-fed ducks around the car park. A walk around the surfaced lakeside path takes around 20 minutes and gives access for visitors wishing to explore further.
There are picnic and play areas with picnic tables dotted around and plenty of grass for games. Play equipment for young children is sited close to the (free) car parks whilst slightly older children can enjoy a climbing boulder and the informal play equipment located around the Lake. There is a small den building area where children can build their own shelters from the materials provided. An Ice Cream kiosk is open during the warmer Summer months and on many weekends. Teas, coffees and cold drinks can also be purchased. Barbecues are permitted in part of Mill Meadow only but must be raised off the ground and not placed on the wooden picnic tables. An ash disposal bin is provided.
A surfaced pathway that goes around the lake and through a local nature reserve enables all visitors to enjoy the wildlife and peaceful nature of the site. There are large picnic areas either side of the River Gipping, which flows through the site, and play equipment for children. Permits are needed for fishing and model boating. Regular guided walks and activities for children take place all year round. Toilets are available and staff are present on site most days.
