Secunda Mpumalanga South - Africa A fuel refinery town
Secunda, has the 1973 oil crisis to thank for its existence.
As a result of this crisis, Secunda was founded to make South Africa less dependent on the importation of crude oil, and there was skepticism that an industry, such as Sasol Syn-fuels would form part of the plans after Sasol One which was formed in the 1950s.
Secunda, derived from the Latin word, secondi, meaning second, was named for being the second Sasol extraction refinery, producing oil from coal after Sasolburg, some 140 kilometers to the west.
Coal being the key ingredient for the industrial process, the strategic location of the town was built amidst the coalfields in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa.
Four coal mines, namely Brandspruit. Middelbult. Bosjesspruit, and Twistdraai, form the largest underground coal mining complex in South Africa, and supplies approximately 37.3 million tons of coal annually to Sasol Synthetic Fuels.
Sasol Two opened on the 1st of March 1980, and Sasol Three began production on the 10th of May 1982, also known as Secunda CTL, which is the largest coal liquefaction plant in the world, producing synthetic fuel, diesel, and related fuels and petrochemicals from coal gasification.
A further two mines were added to the mix. Impumelelo in 2014, and Shondoni in 2015, were opened to aid the demand of a of a third of the country's coal for the project.
Secoonda Syn fuels Operations is a division of Sasol South Africa Limited (previously known as Sasol Two and Sasol Three) are large industrial refineries, which dominate the Secoonda landscape.
During 1974, Sasol Transvaal Townships Limited, a subsidiary company of Sasol Limited, was instructed to establish and develop Secunda.
After the site for the Sasol complex had been identified, it had to be decided whether to combine the existing towns of Evander and Trichardt.
The huge burden of this nature would come at great financial costs, and administrative resources of the already established communities, as well as the tempo at which such development should proceed, and the decision was made to absorb Trichardt into Secunda. Evander would remain a separate and independent town.

Nigel | South Africa Urban Rural Scenic Travel
Nigel is a small gold mining town in Gauteng Province, South Africa southeast of Johannesburg. The town is on the edge of the area known as the East Rand.
A farmer, shopkeeper and prospector, Petrus Johannes Marais, having read Sir Walter Scott's The Fortunes of Nigel at the time formed the Nigel Gold Mining Company after the discovery of gold on the farm Varkensfontein in 1886. The town, which grew around the mine, still bears names derived from Scott's book and its characters with the suburb of Glenvarloch and its streets derived from that source.
Today the town is focused primarily on mining and also has various heavy industries.
The town became known as the setting of the popular Afrikaans-sitcom Vetkoekpaleis, a sitcom that revolves around the daily lives of staff members of the Vetkoekpaleis (a Vetkoek-themed fast-food restaurant).
Nigel's municipal government became part of the much larger City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality following the creation of new local government structures in 2000, along with most of rest of the East Rand.
On 1 August 2010, a fire at the Pieter Wessels old age home led to the deaths of 22 people.

Like Heilbron and Kroonstad in the ORC, it was located in the maize-growing belt of the highveld, but on the north bank of the Vaal River, in the Transvaal, sloping down to the river. It was already in existence when the first civilian inspection took place on 19 February 1901 but it probably started about September 1900 (Dr. Kendal Franks dated it from December 1900). G.W. Goodwin, then chief superintendent of the Transvaal camps, reported in February 1901 that the people were of a ‘superior class’ and appeared in good health, happy and contented. If this was the case, it may have been due to the first superintendent, Captain Bentinck, a remarkably capable man. But the people themselves, many of them employees and tenants of Sammy Marks’s Vereeniging Estates Company, had benefited from the burgeoning markets of the goldfields and were probably relatively affluent. Dr. Kendal Franks, who visited the camp in September 1901, thought them ‘a superior class of burgher, better educated and more advanced in the manners and arts of civilization’. Their tents were often well furnished, some with carpets, and the inmates were active, sewing, making jam tarts and the like. One benefit from the association with the Vereeniging Estates Company was the lavish supply of coal so the inmates were never short of fuel. Like the wiser superintendents, Bentinck had immediately adopted the ration scale which included meat and food was always fairly plentiful and good.-Reference:Website:-

Greylingstad. A small farming town west of Standerton in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
Greylingstad, officially Nthorwani, is a small farming town west of Standerton in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
The town was established in 1909 by the Dutch Reformed Church and was named Greyling, after PJ Greyling, who was the stepson of Piet Retief.
In 1913, a new town was established just five kilometres away on the farm Willemsdal and named Greylingstad in 1914. Because of its location in fertile agricultural territory and its association with the Bezuidenhouts of Johannesburg, Greylingstad held immense strategic importance during the South African War. This was primarily because it was situated on the main railway line, connecting the Reef and the colonial state of Natal

Airbnb doubles economic impact in South Africa in 2022 | Airbnb Public Policy
In 2022, a rebound year for travel, Airbnb supported almost 50,000 jobs and contributed more than R23.5 billion to the South African economy – a 115% increase from pre-COVID-191, according to a new report from independent consultancy Genesis Analytics – commissioned by Airbnb.
According to Genesis Analytics, the Airbnb platform helped drive economic growth across South Africa in both new and existing destinations, and played an important role in the recovery of tourism following the COVID-19 pandemic. The report also highlights how Airbnb is increasingly popular among South Africans both wanting to rent their homes and looking for affordable accommodation options in diverse locations when they travel. Domestic travel on the platform grew by more than a third from 2019 to 2022, and the fastest growth was seen in non-traditional tourist hotspots, with seven out of 10 trending destinations on the platform located outside of traditional tourist hotspots.

Moments before the gardens were closed for safety, many locals rushed to the Gardens to admire the beautiful river - in flood. Sadly most of the garden had already been cut off from the entrance with visitors trapped inside, clearly not stressed.. They had even a better view!
