Places to see in ( Staines - UK )

Staines-upon-Thames is a suburban town on the River Thames in the borough of Spelthorne in Surrey, England. Before 1 April 1965 Staines was in the historic county of Middlesex. Known to the Romans as Pontes or Ad Pontes, then as Stanes and subsequently Staines, the town officially adopted its longer current name on 20 May 2012. However the upon-Thames suffix is still often dropped in common usage.

The town is within the western bounds of the M25 motorway, 17 miles (27 km) west south-west of Charing Cross in London. It is within the London Commuter Belt of South East England, Greater London Urban Area and adjoins part of the Green Belt. Passing along the edge of the town and crossing Staines Bridge is the Thames Path National Trail.

Parts of the large Staines upon Thames post town are whole villages: Laleham, Stanwell and Wraysbury. The post town includes, due to the long association of Staines Bridge with a medieval causeway (levee) on the opposite bank of the river, half of a large part of a neighbouring town, Egham, namely Egham Hythe, which contains a significant business area within the county, and some of the town's oldest listed buildings.

The historic parish at no points exceeds 13 feet (4 m) above river level. It has no remaining woods, but a large number of parks, leisure centres, a football club which has reached the conference level and some multinational research/technology company offices. London Heathrow Airport is centred 3 miles (5 km) north and Staines railway station is a main stop on the London Waterloo to Reading Line.

The original manor of Staines became derelict and was demolished. Staines Bridge spans the Thames with a three arch structure completed in 1832. Until the 14th century, Staines was the tidal limit, but this is now downstream at Teddington – a replica London Stone exists in the Lammas Recreation Ground.

Staines railway station is a stop on all services between London Waterloo station and Weybridge (for the South West Main Line), Reading (for the Great Western Main Line) and Windsor & Eton Riverside. Semi-fast services serve the Waterloo to Reading Line, being the operator's secondary main line. Taxis are available from the station. The bus station is a five-minute walk from the railway station, with services in all directions including to Thorpe Park and Royal Holloway College. Staines-upon-Thames is also a short distance south of Heathrow Airport.

Neighbouring towns and villages are Egham, Wraysbury, Ashford, Stanwell, Laleham and Chertsey. About 3 miles north east of Staines-upon-Thames is Heathrow airport. The area across the Thames between Egham and Staines-upon-Thames town centres is a ward called Egham Hythe.

The Secret Charm of Staithes: Revealed | 4K

This is Staithes, The Secret Charm of Staithes: Revealed
Clinging to the hillside, Staithes is an unmissable destination to explore. From the winding cobbled streets to the charming 18th century cottages, you’ll find this coastal village is full of character.
Staithes was once one of the largest fishing ports in the North East, now this hillside gem is a treasured based for exploring Yorkshire’s cliff top paths and discovering the delights of rock pooling and fossil hunting on the small sandy beach.

Staithes is a charming, traditional fishing village on the North Yorkshire Coast, it is the perfect place to enjoy some time beside the sea.
The North Yorkshire seaside town of Staithes is just 10 miles from Whitby, it embodies many of the reasons why seaside towns hold such appeal. Once one of the busiest fishing ports on the North East coast, Staithes boasts a long proud history as the one-time home of famous Royal Navy captain and explorer, Captain James Cook. Staithes is approximately 22 minutes drive from Whitby along the coast.

A Brief History of Staithes
Remnants of Cook’s time here can be seen in many of the tourist attractions of today including Captain Cook & Staithes Heritage Centre. A recreation of the shop in which James Cook worked during his residency here, the museum is a treasure-trove of over 200 books, engravings, letters, medals and more, providing an insight into his incredible life and career, as well as into Staithes itself.
You can also visit ‘Captain Cook’s Cottage’, and the Captain Cook Inn – a lovely pub/restaurant and hotel overlooking the sea. Famous for its real ales and great food, which includes a range of vegetarian and wheat-free options, you are sure to enjoy a relaxing stay, whether simply enjoying a bite to eat or staying the night. Don’t forget to try their house ale, the Northern Navigator, brewed especially for the Captain Cook Inn by the nearby North Yorkshire Brewery.

Staithes Art History
There is so much to do in Staithes, for both young and old. Fans of art and history will love strolling through the pretty town’s narrow cobbled streets and paying a visit to the elegant Staithes Art Gallery.
Staithes is a magnet for artists who come to admire the beautiful coastal scenery, traditional fishing scenes and village ambience, and immortalise them on canvas. The advent of the railway in 1883 brought a host of artists to Staithes including Hannah Hoyland, Fred Mayor and Harold Knight. Many paintings from local and visiting artists are on display at the gallery throughout the year – look out for special exhibitions and showcases too.

Things to do in Staithes
Exploring and Walking
A popular activity whilst in Staithes is to explore the old village through its fascinating alleys and ginnels. Winding through the village’s cottages and cobbled streets, each alley boasts a quaint name, such as ‘Dog Loup Alley’ – the narrowest alley in the world at just 18 inches wide! You will discover a different side to Staithes through each alley you visit with lots of opportunities for taking a unique and quirky photograph of Staithes from all angles!

Rockpooling and Fossil Hunting
A trip to the seaside wouldn’t be complete without a bit of rock pooling in the abundant rock pools left at low tide between Staithes and Port Mulgrave, many of which are teeming with life that children especially will love to seek out. You will certainly find plenty of fossils and tiny marine creatures whilst exploring, and if you are lucky, you may even spot some seals sunning themselves along the shore!
Staithes sits on what is known as the ‘Dinosaur Coast’, making it a favourite with fossil hunters, palaeontologists and dinosaur fans from across the country. You can choose to go on an organised fossil hunting trip or, for the more experienced, explore independently in and around Staithes and Runswick Bay. If visiting as a family, children will love their finds of ‘fools’ gold’ – little nuggets of Iron pyrite which, to the untrained eye, look just like the real thing!

Staines Walk: Town Centre | Staines-upon-Thames【4K】

Located in the county of Surrey, and just over 15 miles west, and slightly south, of central London, is the town of Staines, also known as Staines-upon-Thames.

Geographically Staines is situated around the confluence of the River Thames and the River Colne (note - not the same River Colne as the one that passes through Colchester). Its history goes back to Roman times, when the area was called Ad Pontes - meaning 'at the bridges'. It is speculated that it was the first bridge over the Thames upstream from the Roman London Bridge, and that it was on the Roman Road from London to Silchester (near Basingstoke), which became known as the Devil's Highway. The name 'Staines' derives from Old English 'stān', meaning stone, possibly deriving from a Roman milestone that the Saxons discovered on this London to Silchester route.

In 1215 England's rebel barons assembled at Staines before meeting King John at Runnymede for the signing of the Magna Carta. Runnymede is a water meadow around two miles west of Staines, and just north of Egham town centre.

From the 13th century a wooden bridge was in use across the River Thames at Staines. This is believed to have survived all the way to the 17th century, at which point it was destroyed following the English Civil War. An Act of Parliament in 1791 authorised the construction of a new bridge. However, this became one of a series of bridges which would be pulled down due to engineering flaws. It wasn't until the fifth attempt that a bridge would remain in place. The bridge in question is the one that stands today - George Rennie's stone arch bridge. Opened in 1832 by William IV, its designer was the son of notable engineer John Rennie, who had worked on multiple bridges across central London including 'New London Bridge', which was later sold to an American investor and reassembled in Arizona.

In 1848 the railway arrived in Staines courtesy of the Windsor, Staines and South Western Railway. Today, trains to Waterloo Station take between 35 and 55 minutes depending on stops. In the other direction, direct trains to Reading take around 50 minutes.

1864 The Linoleum Manufacturing Company was established in Staines by the inventor of the floor covering, Frederick Walton. A lino factory was opened on the site of the 13th century Hale Mill to the north of the town centre. Staines linoleum was exported across Europe and America and was a major source of employment for the area up until the 1960s as vinyl floor coverings became popular. The factory closed in the early 1970s. The industry is commemorated by the 'Roll out the Lino' sculpture on the High Street.

In 1998 Sacha Baron Cohen debuted his Ali G persona. This spoof character was depicted as a suburban wannabe gangster from Staines. The 2002 feature film Ali G Indahouse put additional spotlight on Staines - so much so that Spelthorne Borough Council, to which it belongs, decided to essentially re-brand the town as Staines-upon-Thames as of 2011. How much of this being down to an attempt to distance itself from Ali G is a source of debate!

Indie rock band Hard-Fi formed in Staines in 2003.

Staines Moor - Horses, Cows & Wildlife on the Meadows (Nature near London)

Day one of our travels day down to the south of England.
Had a great walk upon the Staines Moor, taking in the scenery of the wetlands and seeing the wildlife which inhabits it. It was a lovely walk across the in the scorching hot sun and we stopped and chatted for an about hour with a lady who lives locally in Staines.
Staines Moor is a 510.8-hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north of Staines-upon-Thames in Surrey. It is part of the South West London Waterbodies Ramsar site and a Special Protection Area
The Moors are a great area to go for a walk/hike and it's amazing that it's such a grand area of untouched wildland with it being located near London.
