The county of Hampshire’s largest city, Southampton is a historic port where many of the world’s largest cruise liners continue to dock. One such ship, the Titanic departed from Southampton on its ill-fated maiden voyage.
The city also has an aviation background as the place where the Spitfire fighter plane was assembled in the 1930s.
Southampton was the springboard for the D-Day landings in the Second World War, and earlier had been badly damaged by German bombing campaigns because of its value as a commercial port.

Iona Embarkation Day, Southampton
On the day of embarkation, P&O will have previously contacted you with a time to arrive at the terminal. So you may well have a whole day to spend in Southampton, so we spent it as part of our holiday and visited the shopping centre, West Quay which wasn't far from the Holiday Inn where we were staying. Holiday Inn offered to store our suitcases in a room for us so that we were free to roam around Southampton which actually, is a lovely port.
The shopping Centre is enormous and gets very busy on a Saturday but is a nice day out and outside, there are lots of restaurants to eat in.
After spending a day there, we went back to the Holiday Inn to collect our suitcases and were going to walk to the terminal but it was raining so we got a taxi. Holiday Inn allowed us to book from their reception.
Getting on board was like lightening. we were onboard Iona before we knew it. I follow a YouTube channel called 'Solent Ships'. An excellent site where 'The Captain' makes lots of chat and banter while watching cruise ships depart. So we took a Union Jack flag with us, fully knowing that 'The Captain' would find us and focus on us to allow our daughter, Lucy watch us leaving the UK live on his YouTube channel. 'The Captain' did us proud and I included some clips taken from my TV in this video for my video. He's a lovely commentator and actively searches for passengers to highlight so that they can have one last connection with their family before they leave.
My wife was on the phone to Lucy, so we knew that 'The Captain' had found us, which Lucy actually found very emotional .... to see her parents sailing away into the sunset!!

10 Best Seaside Towns in the UK
What are the best seaside towns in the United Kingdom? New towns are developing at the seaside across the UK in addition to those ancient towns and cities. All of these towns and cities are worming their way into the hearts of tourists from home and abroad. With due respect to these towns, and out of a deep sense of duty, we want to identify which of these towns are the best so that we can help the decision-making process for those having reasons to consider seaside towns. On the basis of that, we present to you the 10 best seaside towns in the UK.
Please note that most of these best towns in the UK have at one time or the other been the best in England.
10. Swanage, Dorset, England
The tenth place we’ll consider as one the best seaside towns in the UK is Swanage in South West of England. The town has been a popular seaside resort since Victorian times. Up till now, families have continued to enjoy its calm shallow beach. This seaside is also one of the 10 best seaside resorts in the UK.
With its panoramic views, the seaside resort offers relaxing luxurious holidays in self-catering accommodation in caravans and luxury hot tub lodges. If you want to own a holiday home, they’re available here with unrivaled views across the bay. The town is about one kilometer from the leisurely beautiful Swanage Railway. Its proximity to this and other parks, beaches, and castles makes it a good choice.
9. St Davids, Pembrokeshire, Wales
Stepping out of England, we find a small city and community in Pembrokeshire known as St Davids. It is the smallest location in the whole of the United Kingdom with city status. With its stunning coastal scenery unmatched in Pembrokeshire, it’s also the smallest urban area by local authority boundary.
One of the reasons for its inclusion on this list is its ability to blend its sacred status with its National Park. St Davids has a relaxed and vibrant atmosphere as you see surf shops, outdoor adventure centers, holiday cottages, and hotels in the shadow of its cathedral.
8. Southwold, England
When this town was found in the ninth position on the list of the most popular seaside destinations, we knew that it would be among the 10 best seaside towns in the UK. Now, it is the number 8 on this list. All year round, Southwold remains a tourist attraction, thanks to its dramatic coastline and beautiful architecture. Its cozy pub lunches and walks along its beach are charming.
As you walk along its pier, you will see spectacular views as you check in and out of many independent shops. You would love the charming seaside resort of Southwold. Though it’s almost an island, its sandy beach and hut-lined promenade offer a wonderful environment for holidaymakers and weekenders.
7. Filey, North Yorkshire, England
Ironically to some, Filey which is a town in the Borough of Scarborough considered unpopular by some people is one of the 10 best seaside towns in the UK. Truly, this beautiful seaside destination in North Yorkshire deserves a slot here as one of the most popular in the UK. It used to be a fishing village before developing into a popular resort with a very large beach that is playing a remarkable role in popularizing it.
It is quieter than most of its neighbors and most of the other coastal towns. This is because it has enough accommodations, seats, and transportation. There is no need for any rush here. You can just go there and enjoy your peace.

17 Tourist Places To Visit in London - Sightseeing in london
sightseeing in london - best tourist places to visit in london
Big ben (london's attractions):
Big Ben is the name given to the large bell on top of the Palace of Westminster Clock Tower. However, the English use this term more generally to designate the tower. This monument is one of the symbols of the British capital, and a must-see for tourists. The 96-meter-high clock tower was built between 1843 and 1859, and renamed Elizabeth Tower in 2012 in honor of Queen Elizabeth II, who celebrated her Diamond Jubilee.
Westminster Abbey:
Westminster Abbey is London's best-known religious monument. It is there that the kings and queens of England are buried, as well as certain personalities. This abbey was also the place of coronation of almost all the monarchs of the country. Its construction began in the 13th century, and lasted almost 300 years. Since 1985, the building has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a must see tourist spot for history lovers.
The London Eye:
The London Eye is a 135 meter high Ferris wheel located on the banks of the Thames. It was inaugurated to celebrate the year 2000, which also earned it the nickname Millennium Wheel. If you want to see London from a different perspective, take a seat in one of the attraction's gondolas. With the district of Westminster and Big Ben nearby, the London Eye offers an exceptional panorama of the London capital. And to benefit from an illuminated landscape, the wheel is illuminated at night.
Soho neighborhood:
The district of Soho is the smallest of the British capital. Known for its social mix, it is home to London's Chinatown, a stone's throw from the main square of Trafalgar Square, and many gay establishments. Ideal for going out, the area is full of bars and nightclubs, as well as concert halls and cinemas. To enjoy a lively London night out, this popular area is the best option.
Picadilly Circus:
Picadilly Circus is a very touristic place, also popular with locals. This road junction has a square where is located a fountain with an angel of Christian charity. And above all, the originality of this place is the set of illuminated advertising signs that recall the famous Times Square in New York. The neighborhood is dynamic. It is home to Oxford Street, a long adjoining street known for its many shops. The shopping paradise !
The British Museum:
If there was only one museum in London to be chosen, this would be this one. The British Museum is England’s most visited tourist site, with more than 6 million admissions per year. Open to the public since 1749, it is a veritable gold mine dedicated to the history and culture of man. Its collections are made up of more than 7 million objects from all continents. This museum is free for everyone, so not to be missed. Plan a day to visit the entire site.
Buckingham Palace:
What would England be without its royal family, a true symbol of the country? Buckingham Palace, home to British rulers, is a must-see when visiting London. Countless tourists flock to the palace daily for a chance to spot a member of the Royal Family and to witness the Changing of the Guard at 11:30 a.m. (daily from April to July, and every other day on rest of the year).
Hyde Park:
It is the largest park in London, covering an area of 140 hectares. Hyde Park is one of the 9 Royal Parks in the city. Take a breath of fresh air by walking or cycling the paths of the park, and enjoy a romantic boat ride on the Serpentine. You will meet swans, ducks and squirrels. And there you can find a Speaker's Corner, or speaker's corner, a place where everyone is free to speak in front of the audience.
Tower bridge:
Tower Bridge is a 65 meter high and 250 meter long bridge crossing the Thames. Its architecture is special since this bridge consists of two large towers connected by two high pedestrian paths and by a platform that opens to let boats pass. If you want a good angle to take a picture of it, stand by the Thames, both during the day and at night when it's lit up.
Camden Town:
Camden Town is London's alternative and trendy district. During your visit to the capital, plan at least half a day to wander the alleys of this district. You will be able to observe street art and soak up the surrounding punk and gothic culture. This colorful underground district is also filled with markets where you will find all kinds of rock-style clothes, and where you can eat at low cost thanks to the great variety of food trucks.

Is Southampton Worth Visiting? Pre-Cruise Sightseeing in Southampton UK
Southampton, UK – the embarkation point of notorious cruise ships from the historic Titanic to Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas.
In this video, we spent two and a half days exploring this historic city from the Port, The Tudor House, and Gardens, The Merchants House, and Holyrood Church, to exploring the UK culinary pub scene.
Verdict? I think Southampton is a great destination to explore if you have a day or two before or after your cruise. There is plenty to keep you busy. It is a very walkable city as well.
Thank you for joining me in this series as I show you the hotel we stayed in and our journey in Southampton, Anthem of the Seas, and the Fjords of Norway.
