The Battle of Río San Gabriel and the Conquest of California

A concrete river channel east of Los Angeles was the site of the last major battle of the Mexican-American War in California, the Battle of Río San Gabriel. This is a short video about the battle and its context in the Conquest of California and the Mexican-American War.
The Battle of Río San Gabriel was fought in an afternoon, but it was also part of a longer process that played out over many years, beginning with early Anglo attempts to sieze California from Mexico and continuing after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, which officially ceded California to the United States. Of course, the battle site now looks nothing like it did in 1847. The Río San Gabriel doesn’t even flow down this channel anymore; it’s now occupied by the Río Hondo, a completely different river! The concrete channel was built by the Army Corps of Engineers in the mid-20th century, after a devastating series of floods in the Los Angeles area.
Here is the location of the battle marker, if you want to check it out yourself (although as you probably tell from the video, there’s not much to see there):

Each City has their own vibe and lifetsyle. Neighboring cities in the SGV can have drastic differences and they cater to all needs and wants. For example moving from a city like San Gabriel to its neighboring city San Marino will have a huge effect on your lifestyle even tho they are located right next to each other. San Marino will have alot of privacy, strict city wide restrictions to enforce that, and the properties come with a heft price tag because of it. Or a few minutes drive to the South in San Gabriel, we get the typical suburban city with a pleathora of food options and markets to explore. So, I would reccomend you do some research in selecting your city. Is proximity to Downtown LA important to you? then maybe Monterey Park, Alhambra, and Pasadena can be great choices for you. Do you like living close to the mountains? Azusa, Glendora, Altadena, and Upland will provide exactly that. Looking for huge lots and luxury properties? Bradbury and Arcadia have your back. Whatever you are looking for in the SGV, there is a city that will match what you are looking for.

The amazing hiking trails. The SGV is located just South of the San Gabriel Mountains and that means amazing hikes for all of us. I have an entire video on the top trails in the SGV which i will link here. Looking on the map there are 2 main areas where you can find hikes, number 1 is up along the urban interface zone here, or taking angeles crest highway just north of La Canada Flintridge and branching off from there. Whatever you choose you’ll find views of the SGV and often time downtown LA too.
3. Diversity of Food
I could talk about this all day. Food in the SGV is amazing and really ethnically diverse. We have almost every type of cuisine here, but what SGV does best in my opinion is Chinese, Vietnamese, and Mexican Food. But, don’t take just my word for it, wheeltraveler, a blog that covers food all over the SGV and has explored over 40 different cuisines in this area states that “The San Gabriel Valley has proven itself an food diversity powerhouse will all these different cuisines…” So, as an unofficial foodie, I have really enjoyed growing up in the San Gabriel Valley.
4. Farmers Markets
The next thing that locals know is the Farmer’s Market Markets. Its a hidden gem in the SGV and most cities in the area will have a weekly farmer’s market. They usually include some type of produce, and fruits, as well as a diverse pallete of vendors. Some note-able and memorable ones are the South Pasadena and Monrovia Markets, those cities go over the top and feature a grand display of farm-to-table produce and a big assortment of vendors from, honey, knife sharpening service, dips, soups, spices, pie and so much more.
5. Boba Milk Tea
Lastly, the San Gabriel Valley locals know about the boba milk tea. Also known as bubble tea, but a disclaimer: you will be made fun of if you don’t call it boba milk tea in the SGV, So, Boba Milk Tea essentially tapioca balls inside of teas and milk teas. Some other popular toppings are grass jelly, aloe vera, or red bean. it originates in Taiwan, but i believe the San Gabriel Valley has popularized it all across Los Angeles County. There is no shortage of boba shops across the SGV, its even trumps mcdonalds and starbucks in our area and suprisingly, not alot of people outside of the SGV know about it.
