We LOVE visiting the best small towns in America. On our way home from biking the Natchez Trace Parkway we stopped in Laurel, Mississippi to see what makes this small town authentically wonderful. While the HGTV show “Hometown” is based here, the town’s revitalization both in business and real estate in Laurel goes back before the show ever hit TV. People love this town because for many, it’s home. It’s a place where friends gather, businesses grow, and people invest in the town that they all have in common.
From delicious cookies at Sweet Somethings Bakery and shopping at Southern Antiques, to strolling the giant oak lined streets of some of the best neighborhoods in Laurel, MS surrounded by some of the prettiest houses in Laurel, our one day in this town wasn’t long enough. We could have visited for days to meet more locals and eat and shop more of the best local places. Are you thinking about retiring soon? Are you looking for an affordable town to retire in? Maybe you aren't retiring but still looking for a nice town where you can afford a home. If you are in those situations this video is for you.
We researched the Southern United States looking for the best towns someone could survive on Social Security only. That monthly check is currently $1658 a month. We looked at Cost of Living, housing, health care deductibles, insurance, and Utilities. These towns are the best bet for the average person on Social Security or some other sort of fixed income.
Most of these towns have homes for sale that can fit your budget. A Real Estate purchase in some of these towns is almost cheaper than renting.
Today we are looking at the Southern States. Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Louisiana, and Kentucky. Virginia and West Virginia should be on this list but some consider those part of the North Atlantic.
Side Note: This is focusing on residential real estate not commercial. People keep asking that for some reason. These are just the affordable and best places to retire or live in the southern United States.

The Top 10 Pennsylvania State Parks (2023 edition)
Join us this week as we take a look back at some of my favorite State Parks within the commonwealth of Pennsylvania! In this video we will be talking about some of the best parks PA has to offer, from the history rich Eastern side of the state to the banks of Lake Erie and everything in between. Just a little disclaimer, no I haven't been to each and every state park within the state, this list will focus on the 25 parks I've documented thus far. Every year we will be coming out with a new update to this list as we add to our park totals.

On our last and final video of our 2021 road trip from Florida to Montana we spent the day in Laurel, Mississippi. This is where my (Melissa's) personal favorite HGTV show, Hometown is made. In this show locals Ben and Erin Napier fix up houses for families while also starting a revitalization project in their hometown.
We explored Ben's store, Scotsman Co which is a mixture of his woodshop, where you can see him woodworking and a general store where you can buy all kinds of goodies. (See Video) And then we went to Erin's store, Laurel Mercantile. Where you can buy all kinds of house wares. Then we were hungry, so we checked out 2 local spots, a restaurant and a bakery. And they were both yummy!

Laurel is a city in Maryland, United States, located midway between Washington and Baltimore on the banks of the Patuxent River. While the city limits are entirely in northern Prince George's County, outlying developments extend into Anne Arundel, Montgomery and Howard counties. Founded as a mill town in the early 19th century, Laurel expanded local industry and was later able to become an early commuter town for Washington and Baltimore workers following the arrival of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1835. Largely residential today, the city maintains a historic district centered on its Main Street, highlighting its industrial past.
The Department of Defense is a prominent presence in the Laurel area today, with the Fort Meade Army base, the NSA and Johns Hopkins' Applied Physics Laboratory all located nearby. Laurel Park, a thoroughbred horse racetrack, is located just outside the city limits.
