Why foreigners should visit Quanzhou, a rarely visited but totally underrated city! EP15, S2
I stayed in Quanzhou for quite some time, and it quickly became one of my favorite cities in China.
Foreign tourists are rare, but Quanzhou is a hidden gem. And I have enough reasons to say that. As the birth place of Fujianese culture and the first Chinese trade ports that opened up to the outside world Quanzhou is the place to find a huge diversity in Fujian Province:
⭕️ Kong Fu and Shaolin Temple
⭕️ Beautifully preserved historical city quarter (UNESCO sites!)
⭕️ Great food, laid back, and stunning landscape
⭕️ Incredibly diverse religion, and you can find temples, mosques, churches...
and the list goes on...
In short, it is a super laid-back city with modern charm, and an ancient soul!
Join me on this adventure :)

Quanzhou, a Maritime Hub , Added to UNESCO World Heritage List
East China's port city of Quanzhou, once hailed as the very great and noble city by the Italian explorer Marco Polo, won UNESCO World Cultural Heritage status Sunday, bringing the total number of the country's UNESCO World Heritage sites to 56.
UNESCO accepted Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China as a cultural property on its World Heritage List amid the ongoing 44th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Fuzhou, capital of east China's Fujian Province.
Located on narrow plains along the coastline of Fujian, Quanzhou was one of the world's largest ports along the historic Maritime Silk Road, particularly in ancient China's Song Dynasty (960-1279) and Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).
The serial property includes 22 sites of administrative buildings and structures, religious buildings, and statues. The property witnessed multi-cultural communities, cultural memorial sites and monuments, the production of ceramics and iron, and a transportation network formed of bridges, docks and pagodas that guided voyagers.

Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China
On July 25, 2021, with the sound of the hammer falling at the deliberation site of the 44th World
Heritage Conference, “Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China” officially became the 56th World Heritage Site in China.
In the world maritime trade network from the 10th to 14th century AD, Quanzhou was one of the highly prosperous emporiums. As one of the most important windows for the exchanges between China and the world during the Song and Yuan Dynasties, Quanzhou demonstrated China’s complete maritime trade system, advanced economic level, and diversified and inclusive cultural attitude. Filled with the memory of the sea and carrying a long history, the connotations of the 22 heritage sites are still brimming with vibrancy. Today, nearly a thousand years later, it is still displaying the unique charm of the ancient oriental seaport.

Mazu, also known as Tianfei and Tianhou, commonly known as Sea Goddess, is the goddess in charge of maritime shipping in legend.
Mazu, whose original name was Lin Mo, was born on March 23, 960 AD in Meizhou Island, Putian, Fujian. Her parents believed in Buddhism and dreamed that Guanyin gave her medicine and gave birth to her. She became a disciple at the age of eight, believed in Buddhism at the age of ten, and learned magic at the age of thirteen. On the ninth day of the ninth month in the fourth year of Yongxi in the Song Dynasty (987 AD), she died while rescuing fishermen at the age of 28. She was dressed up and ascended to heaven on a mountain stone as a god. In the thirty-third year of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty (1694), local residents built a temple to worship her and called her Tongxian Lingnu. She was praised and conferred titles in the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, and was conferred Heavenly Holy Mother in the Qing Dynasty.
Fishermen and sailors from all over the coastal areas of China regard Mazu as the protector of the sea.
