In This section i cross the hilly and sparsely populated green region of Aisne .Forests en meadows alternate with small villages and hamlets .

A business trip almost brought me to the Atlantic Ocean in France. On the way back to Germany I was recommended to stop in Laon. Laon is a quite old city that sits on the only mountain of the whole area. So I drove there times past and made a small walk through the city.

Soissons is a city in Picardie (now Hauts-de-France region) that used to be under the Roman rule until Clovis I. He was the first king of Franks to unite all of the Frankish tribes under one rule. It is here where Roman Empire began being transformed, taking France into its new chapter. In this video we tour the Soissons, visit ancient crypt, abbey and cathedral. Join us on a virtual trip to this exceptional city in France.

Laon France
Laon, hooggelegen middeleeuws stad van Kunst en Geschiedenis, vroeger geliefd bij de schrijver Victor Hugo die er vol lof over was, is omringd door 7 kilometer stadsmuur en heeft meer dan 80 historische beschermde of ingeschreven monumenten.
Zijn prachtige gotische kathedraal met vijf indrukwekkende torens heerst over de hoge stad. De O.L.V. kathedraal van Laon is gebouwd in de 12de en 13de eeuw, heeft een harmonieuze voorgevel met poorten voorzien van gewerkte bogen, en als opvallend detail levensgrote ossen op de hoeken van de torens aan de voorzijde, een verwijzing naar een oude lokale legende. Als u naar binnen gaat kunt u de indrukwekkende beuk bewonderen, maar ook de prachtige met rozen versierde glas in lood ramen van het koor en de dwarsbeuk aan de noordkant...
Maak een wandelingetje rond de kathedraal, langs de stadsmuren of door de middeleeuwse straten, en ontdek de vele monumenten, en gebouwen van de vestingstad: het voormalig bischoppelijk paleis, nu de rechtbank; hospitaal Hôtel-Dieu uit de 12de eeuw, waarin het VVV kantoor van de streek van Laon zich gevestigd heeft, met zijn gotische zaal gewelfd met bogen; de burcht, gebouwd op bevel van Henri IV; Romaanse kapel van de Templiers, met de transi van Guillaume de Harcigny, arts van koning Charles VI; de poort van Ardon uit de 13de eeuw... Een wandeling langs de stadsmuren is tevens de gelegenheid om van het prachtige uitzicht over de lage stad, en de omliggende laagvlakte te genieten. Het bezoek aan de hoge stad neemt u vervolgens mee naar het westen, waar de middeleeuwse poort van Soissons en de scheve toren (la tour penchée) rijzen; hier vindt u ook de abdij Saint-Martin, met zijn voormalige abdijkerk van de Premontratenzers uit de 12de eeuw, de kloostergang uit de 18de eeuw met zijn middeleeuwse tuin, en de kloostergebouwen waarin nu de gemeentebibliotheek is ondergebracht.
Voor de liefhebbers van kunst en archeologie is er het museum van Laon, ondergebracht in de voormalige commanderij van de Templiers. Hier vindt u een antieke verzameling Griekse, Egyptische en Cypriotische kunst, regionale archeologie en schilderijen van de 15de tot 19de eeuw, van de Franse, Italiaanse, Vlaamse en Nederlandse stromingen.

Top reasons to visit the Franco-American Museum of Blérancourt in 2016
The story of the Franco-American Museum at the Château de Blérancourt in Picardy, France--which will reopen in the fall of 2016, is fascinating and heartwarming. Founded by Anne Morgan, daughter of JP Morgan, Blérancourt started out as her WWI HQ to assist in the recovery of devasted Picardy. The museum has been closed for nearly 10 year for an extensive renovation and addition of a new wing.
THE GREAT CATHEDRALS: SOISSONS relaxing, contemplative, peaceful, inspirational, consoling
Original orchestral music from MusicTreks.org ( If you’ve been to Paris, the west façade of Soissons Cathedral may be familiar. That’s because the 13th century tower is a copy of Notre Dame’s twin towers, which were completed ten to twenty years earlier than Soissons’. The architects had planned a second tower, but for reasons unknown, it was never built. The existing tower received severe bomb damage during World War 1.
Designated by the Pope a “basilica,” Soissons Cathedral has special status in the Roman Catholic Church, including the right to possess a papal throne and papal high altar. Based on the design of Chartres, Soissons was built over 100 years, from 1177 until the late 13th century.
For the text sung by the choir, I chose Requiem Aeternam (Eternal rest) from the Latin Mass, and I scored the piece for large chorus, strings (11 violins, 13 cellos, and 9 double basses), and 6 French horns.
Soisson Cathedral is also known as Cathedrale Saint-Gervais Saint-Protais. An earlier version of this piece is included in my Requiem Mass (2021), 1st movement.

Nowhere else can we experience the artistry and ethos of the Middle Ages so vividly. Nowhere else can we come face-to-face with the skill and imagination of ancient architects, stone masons, sculptors, and stained-glass artists and craftsmen.
Walking through these sacred places, we can almost hear the voices of the many thousands of worshippers and visitors who have trod these same stones in centuries past. The great cathedrals are, indeed, windows on an ancient world. They are inspiring monuments to the artistry of medieval Europe, and to the vision and skill of the people who built them.
