Travel Guide New Mexico Bosque del Apache Socorro New Mexico
Bosque del Apache is Spanish for woods of the Apache, and is rooted in the time when the Spanish observed Apaches routinely camped in the riverside forest. Since then the name has come to mean one of the most spectacular National Wildlife Refuges in North America. Here, tens of thousands of birds--including sandhill cranes, Arctic geese, and many kinds of ducks--gather each autumn and stay through the winter. Feeding snow geese erupt in explosions of wings when frightened by a stalking coyote, and at dusk, flight after flight of geese and cranes return to roost in the marshes.
In the summer Bosque del Apache lives its quiet, green life as an oasis in the arid lands that surround it.
The Refuge is 57,191 acres located along the Rio Grande near Socorro, New Mexico. The Refuge is located at the northern edge of the Chihuahuan desert, and straddles the Rio Grande, approximately 20 miles south of Socorro, New Mexico. The heart of the Refuge is about 12,900 acres of moist bottomlands--3,800 acres are active floodplain of the Rio Grande and 9,100 acres are areas where water is diverted to create extensive wetlands, farmlands, and riparian forests. The rest of Bosque del Apache NWR is made up of arid foothills and mesas, which rise to the Chupadera Mountains on the west and the San Pascual Mountains on the east. Most of these desert lands are preserved as wilderness areas.
Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bosque del Apache NWR is an important link in the more than 500 refuges in North America. The goal of refuge management is to provide habitat and protection for migratory birds and endangered species and provide the public with a high quality wildlife and educational experience.

SOLMAR V TRIP REPORT & REVIEW APRIL 2022 | SOCORRO ISLAND
This is a video of our full trip to Socorro Island for a week of scuba diving on the live aboard vessel Solmar V, part of the Pacific Fleet company. We had originally planned this pacific diving trip 3 years ago, but due to pandemic, it was rescheduled to 2022, which turned out to make Edye’s 50th birthday an epic one. This footage is from April 22-29th, 2022.
The intent is not only to show you the scuba diving footage, but to give you a full idea of what the entire trip is like….where you get picked up, how to get to and from the airport, how tanks are set up, etc.
A small synopsis:
Fly a day before your scheduled to disembark
Stay either at a hotel that Pacific Fleet has a discount for, or a hotel near the marina
Pay in advance for the cab ride to the hotel, with the Solmar folks.
You will also have to pay a park fee…put that in your budget
Nitrox is an additional charge, as is aluminum 100s (vs. standard 80cu tanks).
The ride to the first island is overnight, so by the time you get there, theres enough time for a check out dive.
You dive from the inflatable ribs, not from the Solmar V itself. These are big, and they have ladders. You’ll take your gear off in the water and hand it up along with your fins. Very easy getting up on the ladder.
Our week, water temps avg 75F. I used a 4/3mm suit with a heated vest underneath, that I rarely used. Edye used a 5 mil suit. Its nice to have the heated vest.
Food is served three times a day, and you can always ask for more. Beer, wine and alcohol included, along with snacks and fruits.
The rooms are small. If you are a couple, try to get room 403.
There are outlets in the rooms, but they ask you not to use them. Plenty of outlets in the galley, and the table outside.
There are two ribs, and groups are divided up so each has a dive master. Do not be afraid to ask to switch groups if you prefer a different dive master.
You do not need your own towels.
It’s nice to have a warm lightweight jacket.
No one got seasick, Bonine worked for us the first night.
Hot water is everywhere, water pressure is really good in the showers.
While you cannot pay for a cab ride back to the airport in advance, they will group you with other folks depending on your flight times, thus lowering the cost of the ride back (which is an hour).
Pacific Fleet will NEVER give you a refund, know this in advance (get trip insurance). I heard if you book with a third party, like liveaboard.com, they DO offer refunds but cannot confirm that.
It IS worth the money - - @Solmar V Liveaboard
Have fun, dive hard, rinse, lather, repeat.

The Revillagigedo Islands (Spanish: Islas Revillagigedo, IPA: [reˈβiʝa xiˈxeðo]) or Revillagigedo Archipelago are a group of four volcanic islands in the Pacific Ocean, known for their unique ecosystem. They lie approximately 285 miles (458 km) from Socorro Island south and southwest of Cabo San Lucas, the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, and 698 to 1,092 kilometres (434 to 679 mi) west of Manzanillo. Historically linked to the Mexican state of Colima, which was granted to the islands in 1861 to establish a penal colony. The islands are under Mexican federal property and jurisdiction.[2][3]
In July 2016, the Revillagigedo Archipelago was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site,[4] and in November 2017 they were declared to be a marine reserve and a national park of Mexico.[5] Some of the volcanoes are active, with the last eruption of Volcán Bárcena in 1953, and Socorro in 1993. Travelling to the islands from their nearest land point takes approximately 26 to 30 hours, as they can only be reached by sea.
