NE Slovenia, gems of Styria, Zice & Olimje monastery, Rogaska Slatina & Slovenske konjice
Your guide Tina takes you to the region of Styria in NE Slovenia and shows you two important monasteries and two interesting towns.
Our first stop is in the town of Slovenske Konjice, known as the town of wine and flowers. A walk through the streets of the town, first mentioned in 1165, takes you to the arch parish church of St George which dates to 13 century. Listen to the priests singing when you enter the church. At the time of the Ottoman raids, the church served as a fortified refuge.
Our second stop is in Žiče charterhouse, established in 1160. This was a first Carthusian monastery in the German world and also, the first outside of France or Italy. Its monastic church was dedicated to St John the Baptist. Many cultural events happen during summer; concerts and even weddings. We welcome 20.000 visitors per day.
Our third stop is in Rogaška Slatina, a health resort with 400 years of tradition and the unique Donat Mg mineral water. Rogaška Slatina was awarded the Slovenia Green Destination designation.
Our fourth and final stop is in Olimje Monastery, which lies only a stone throw away from the border of Croatia. It was first a castle in the 16 century, converted to a monastery in the 17 century. Olimje is considered the 3rd oldest pharmacy in the world (1663), after Paris and Dubrovnik. The frescoes in the round room tell us about the path to health and happiness.
Visit the region of Slovenia Styria and learn more about the legends and stories of Slovenian noble family, Counts of Celje. Ask your local guide Tina about the love story between Veronika of Desenic and the count's son, Friderik II. What a story!

🇸🇮 Slovenia day Trips: Postojna town The Slovenian Karst region capital [Kras] home of Postojna Cave
Slovenia day Trips: Postojna town The Slovenian Karst region capital [Kras] home of Postojna Cave
I decided to visit the town of Postojna which is the capital of Slovenian Karst region or Kras in Slovenian. It is a small but charming town, with a big tourist attraction the Postojna Cave / Postonjska jama and about 10 Km from Postojna there is a fairy tale Predjama Castle / Predjamski Grad. Follow my videos to see how they look like!
HISTORY: For such a small municipality, Postojna boasts more legends and curiosities than you might imagine. The region is famous for several archaeological sites from the Palaeolithic era, the best known of which is undoubtedly the Betalov spodmol rock shelter, which you can visit yourself. Climb to the summit of Sovič – the mysterious hill in the centre of the town – or stroll through the oldest part of Postojna, the district known as Majlont, which lies just below the hill. The existence of a castle on Sovič is first attested in the mid-13th century. This castle was destroyed by fire in the late 17th century and replaced by a new lower castle or manor house in today's Tito Square (Titov trg) – where the Karst Research Institute is now based.

The town's name has not always been Postojna. It is first attested in the 13th century as Arnsberg (later Adelsberg). The name went through several permutations before arriving at its definitive form. In the mid-14th century, for example, we find the form Postoyna. Interestingly, Postojna was originally defined as a market (15th century), and it was not until 1909 that it was granted town status.
What do you know about carters and cart transport? The people of Postojna are still known as carters today, and the reason for this is to be found in the town's history. The development of cart transport was extremely significant for Postojna, thanks to its position on the trade route and main road (the Mast Road) connecting Carniola to the Adriatic and Friuli. The road was later joined by a railway line, and the first train steamed into Postojna in the 19th century. The building of the Südbahn or Southern Railway and the coming of the train caused the decline of cart transport, but only as an activity, since in the warmth of their hearts the people of Postojna are still carters. The bygone days of cart transport are remembered every year at the Carters' Holiday (Furmanski praznik) in Postojna.
The arrival of the train also meant the beginnings of mass tourism in Postojna. Tourists came to Postojna with one purpose – just like the majority of visitors today: to see the famous Postojna Cave. This was what made Postojna one of the most important tourist destinations in Europe at that time. Incredibly, in 1894 Postojna received seven times as many visitors as Bled and Lake Garda! Since then it has grown in importance in other areas too – as the centre of education and administration (including a law court) in the wider region, as well as its centre of commerce, culture and healthcare. Efforts continue today to further consolidate Postojna's status as a centre of international karstology and as a tourist destination.
Did you know:
that the original name for Postojna derives from a German word meaning eagle (aro), so Arnsperg can literally be translated as Eagle's Hill.
Postojna is also another name for the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), which once nested on Sovič and also appears on Postojna's town crest.
The name Postojna also has one further meaning – postojáti or postati means to stop for a brief time.

The old Castle in Konjice / Slovenia
Ruins of the Castle from 12th century at the top of small hill just over the city of Konjice. In the end of December the Sun is pretty low over the horizon and the light is good.
The castle was destroyed in fire at the middle of the 17teen century and was never rebuilt.
The only renovated part is the Tower which is pretty high and actually the only part of the castle visible from the city. The renovation was not very successful and it has now quite different look as the remaining parts of the castle. The surrounding terrain is perfect for recreational activities, picnics etc.
Slovenske Konjice Stolpnik 1012 m marec 2018

Slovenia In 48 Hours
As one of Europes smallest capital cities, Ljubljana is known for its castle, Tivoli City Park and museums. The peaceful curving River with its many bridges divides the old town and the modern commercial hub. This is a truly lovely place to visit with easy access to most of the tourist attractions, everywhere is generally walkable with many things to see and do on most routes. Lake Bled is the tranquil cherry on top of this city visit, slightly further out but definitely worth it! I stayed at the Intercontinental which was great the spa and views were 5*. Places to eat were good with quality local ingredients these included JB restaurant, Strelec and most of the café's along the river are easy-going relaxed and have some great desserts! LBLx
