Tour to Kuressaare, the capital of Estonian island
Our next destination was the most significant settlement on the island. Kuressaare is home to several SPA hotels, a beautiful but small old city, and the most preserved Knights fortress in Estonia. You can spend a day in Kuressaare visiting the history museum in the fort and walking around and having lunch on the main street of the city. After a recent renovation, it became very welcoming and pleasant to spend time.

FREE SITES IN TALLINN - SONG FESTIVAL GROUNDS, DISC GOLF, SOVIET STATUES BEHIND MAARJAMÄE PALACE
In this VLOG we continue with our tour of the top sights of Tallinn. There is so much fascinating history to be appreciated, absorbed and hopefully to learn from in this country!
We walk across from The Japanese Gardens in Kadriorg Park (see vlog 16) and head over to the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds which is where the Estonian Song Festival is held every 5 years.
These grounds feature a huge outdoor concert arena built in 1959 and host large concerts and festivals throughout the year. Not only are these grounds spectacular to look at with the ocean as their backdrop, they also have a special place in the hearts of Estonians because it was right there in 1988 that Estonia’s massive, musical demonstration against Soviet rule set the nation on it’s road towards re-independence.
We were able to see how resourceful Estonians can be, as during the Covid-19 pandemic they turned the arena into a drive-in socially distanced cinema. We saw all the cars parked up watching a big screen positioned where the huge choir would normally be placed. Amazing idea!
Whilst stopping for coffee at the Festival Grounds, we learned a bit more about how Estonians love to play disc golf and found out there are so many different types of discs. It seems Craig now really wants to play disc golf!
Afterwards, we make the short walk along Pirita tee over to the Estonian History Museum (Maarjamäe Palace) which although we couldn’t go inside due to closures of museums during the pandemic, the gardens behind the palace are still open and it is always free to take a tour around the Soviet statue graveyard featuring monuments of former Russian leaders such as Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Lenin. These statues were built and placed around the city during Soviet occupation. This area is a stark reminder to everyone that this country has come through great struggles over power and freedom and also that after just 29 years of Estonian independence (since 1991), this freedom should not be taken for granted.
We then take a walk across the ‘Red Carpet’ towards the film museum taking a look at the full layout of the different sections of this museum complex, which are currently closed during the pandemic…

* We’ll also take you on a tour of one of Estonia’s most controversial Soviet leftovers, the 1960 Obelisk that stands out overlooking Tallinn’s subdistrict Maarjamäe (Maria’s Hill) the Bolshevik memorial to it’s victims during the Russian Civil War.
* Right next to the Obelisk, stands the more recent counter-monument, opened in 2018 which is an incredible monument to Estonia’s victims of communism where 75,000 people (20 percent of Estonia’s population) were killed during the years of Soviet occupation.

Suur Munamägi translation Great Egg Mountain is the highest peak in Estonia (and the Baltic states), reaching 318 meters (1,043 ft) above sea level. It is located near the village of Haanja, in Võru County in the south-eastern corner of Estonia, close to the borders of both Latvia and Russia. The landscape around the peak - the Haanja Upland - is gently hilly.

The territory of Võrumaa covers 2,305 km2 (890 sq mi) and is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. In January 2013 Võru County had a population of 32,806, 2.5% of the total population in Estonia. The county is subdivided into 12 rural municipalities and one urban municipality, the county capital, Võru.

The locality of Sillamäe was first mentioned in 1502 when the area was under the control of Livonian Order. The bridge across Sõtke and a mill in Sillamäe were documented in 1700.

Valaste Waterfall is the highest waterfall in Estonia and neighboring regions (30.5 m) situated between Ontika and Valaste in the Toila Parish of the Ida-Viru County and formed by a stream, as it flows over the Baltic Klint not far from the shore of the Gulf of Finland. It is a popular tourist attraction with its spray freezing up in winter.
There is a parking lot, some explanatory signs, and a trail using a double spiral staircase to get down the cliff. Opposite of the waterfall, a viewing platform has been built, and this offers views of the falls.
The platform went out of service and the stairs to it were closed since 2013. A new staircase with platforms and walkways to the shore of the Gulf of Finland has been built and opened to the public in 2018.

Purekkari cape is the northernmost place of mainland Estonia.
The cape is 1.5 km long, covered with rocks and boulders, and located on the Pärispea Peninsula in Lahemaa National Park. There is a small island at the end of the cape, which can be reached only when the water level is low. Thorny Japanese rose bushes catch the eye during blooming and when the roses bear fruit in the autumn. In the autumn, you can also see many migratory birds.

The promenade by the sea is one of the most beautiful in Estonia, actually there aren't too many cities right by the sea. The promenade has a obseravtion tower, rest areas, children's playgrounds, an outdoor gym, a cafe, a restaurant, and you can also just be by the sea and swim there.

Sillamäe, Estonia. A walk in the city center. 4K
Sillamäe is a town in Northern Estonia, on the shores of the Gulf of Finland. What is remarkable about this city is its center, which was built in the late 40s and early 50s. In its construction, standard projects of the time have been used, but a good planning has been made and it looks actuually very good.
Sillamäe was a closed town during the Soviet era, because uranium mining and enrichment took place there and attempts were made to keep it hidden from the public. At the end of the video, you can see on the left side a plateau protruding from the sea, which is not something natural, but a repository for nuclear waste. Today it is completely safe.

We were simply mind blown by the underrated picturesqueness of this historical old town. It definitely deserves its place among the top UNESCO world heritage sites that we have visited so far. Eaven though it has its fare amount of tourists like us, we found it extremely relaxing and small village like. No hastle, and a very peacefull and quiet atmosphere.
