BAGAN - MYANMAR'S NO. 1 ATTRACTION - WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

MYANMAR - 10-DAY FIRST TIME EXPLORER - BAGAN - DAY 3 - EPISODE 1
Asia 2020 - Travel Bucket List ...TRAVELS WITH LOBO
10 Days makes for a very compact schedule so, after two full days of exciting sightseeing in Yangon we move on to Bagan - the no. 1 tourist attraction in Myanmar. In this vlog I share our experiences in getting there and also the background information we did not have at the time. So I call this episode MYANMAR BASICS that will hopefully be helpful to anyone planning to go to Bagan.
Bagan is noted for its many pagodas, temples and stupas. It is stunning to read that even today 2229 temples and pagodas remain. Many of these damaged pagodas underwent restorations in the 1990s by the military government, which sought to make Bagan an international tourist destination.
Bagan is an ancient city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar.] From the 9th to 13th centuries, the city was the capital of the Pagan Kingdom, the first kingdom that unified the regions that would later constitute modern Myanmar. During the kingdom's height between the 11th and 13th centuries, 4,446 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone, of which the remains of 3,822 temples and pagodas still survive to the present day.
According to the Burmese chronicles, Bagan was founded in the second century AD, and fortified in 849 AD by King Pyinbya, 34th successor of the founder of early Bagan.[5] Mainstream scholarship however holds that Bagan was founded in the mid-to-late 9th century by the Mranma (Burmans), who had recently entered the Irrawaddy valley from the Nanzhao Kingdom. It was among several competing Pyu city-states until the late 10th century when the Burman settlement grew in authority and grandeur.[6]
The culture of Bagan was dominated by religion. The religion of Bagan was fluid, syncretic and by later standards, unorthodox. It was largely a continuation of religious trends in the Pyu era where Theravada Buddhism co-existed with Mahayana Buddhism, Tantric Buddhism, various Hindu (Saivite, and Vaishana) schools as well as native animist (nat) traditions. While the royal patronage of Theravada Buddhism since the mid-11th century had enabled the Buddhist school to gradually gain primacy, other traditions continued to thrive throughout the Pagan period to degrees later unseen.[8]

The Pagan Empire collapsed in 1287 due to repeated Mongol invasions (1277–1301). Recent research shows that Mongol armies may not have reached Bagan itself, and that even if they did, the damage they inflicted was probably minimal.[9] However, the damage had already been done. The city, once home to some 50,000 to 200,000 people, had been reduced to a small town, never to regain its preeminence. The city formally ceased to be the capital of Burma in December 1297 when the Myinsaing Kingdom became the new power in Upper Burma.
Bagan survived into the 15th century as a human settlement,[12] and as a pilgrimage destination throughout the imperial period. A smaller number of new and impressive religious monuments still went up to the mid-15th century but afterward, new temple constructions slowed to a trickle with fewer than 200 temples built between the 15th and 20th centuries.[7] The old capital remained a pilgrimage destination but pilgrimage was focused only on a score or so most prominent temples out of the thousands such as the Ananda, the Shwezigon, the Sulamani, the Htilominlo, the Dhammayazika, and a few other temples along an ancient road. The rest—thousands of less famous, out-of-the-way temples—fell into disrepair, and most did not survive the test of time.[7]
Bagan today is a main tourist destination in the country's nascent tourism industry, which has long been the target of various boycott campaigns. The majority of over 300,000 international tourists to the country in 2011 are believed to have also visited Bagan.[citation needed] Several Burmese publications note that the city's small tourism infrastructure will have to expand rapidly even to meet a modest pickup in tourism in the following years.

On 24 August 2016, a major earthquake hit central Burma and again did major damage in Bagan; this time almost 400 temples were destroyed.

On 6 July 2019, Bagan was officially inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, after 24 years since the military government first nominated the city in 1995, during the 43rd session of the World Heritage Committee.[19] This makes Bagan the second World Heritage Site in Myanmar, after the Ancient Cities of Pyu. As part of the criteria for the inscription of Bagan, the government of Myanmar has pledged to relocate existing hotels in the archaeological zone to a dedicated hotel zone by 2028.[20]

Shwedagon Pagoda, Myanmar [Amazing Places 4K]

The Shwedagon Pagoda is the most impressive and sacred Buddhist site in Myanmar. The pagoda is claimed to be 2,600 years old, but according to the historians and archaeologists it was built between 6th and 10th centuries. It has been damaged by earthquakes on several occasions and later rebuilt and raised higher, to its current height of 99 meters/325 ft.
In the video: Early morning/Sunrise and late afternoon/Sunset views of the pagoda and the surrounding temples, stupas and shrines.

View from Sagaing (near Mandalay), Myanmar

【Myanmar Tourism】Mingun Pahtodawgyi

The Mingun Pahtodawgyi an incomplete monument stupa in Mingun, approximately 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) northwest of Mandalay in Sagaing Region in central Myanmar (formerly Burma).

Site of Wonders: This is Bagan in Myanmar (Burma)

Second only to Cambodia's Angkor in the region, Bagan is a sprawling, dramatic, and highly captivating historical site. Home to more than 2,000 temples and pagodas spread across a flat valley and straddling a great river, the area was once home to a great imperial capital and more than 8,000 temples and pagodas which earthquakes, disrepair, and mother nature have reclaimed.

Exploring Bagan is an amazing experience and one that easily takes two days. The local towns that are situated in the area (we stayed in New Bagan) rent electric bikes (crazy right?) for about $6 a day which makes exploring the temples at your own pace and on your own schedule super fun.

For those of you who know about my love for Dan Carlin's Hardcore History and Wrath of the Khan's series, one of the cool things about this region is that the empire fell in large part due to pressures exerted by the nearby Mongol conquests.

For those wondering about getting TO Bagan - it's a simple process by air via regional airlines, or you can do what we did and take a 1st class overnight bus from Yangon (formerly Rangoon/the old capital).

The entire region was incredibly safe, with wonderful locals who were spectacularly welcoming.

🇲🇲 Do Not Miss This in Mandalay Myanmar | Mandalay's Ancient Palace

This series was filmed in February 2020. Please take into consideration current government restrictions and political unrest in these locations before you plan a trip in 2021. Stay Safe!

After visiting Kuthodaw Pagoda, the World's largest book, we walked along the moat to Mandalay Palace. We entered the palace on the Eastern side, the only entrance tourist are allowed to enter. There was a booth to the left of the palace gate where you show your Mandalay pass ($10 we bought ours at the Teak Monastery). One person in you party must leave their passport at the gate, and you also need to give the name of your hotel to the military personnel. They give you a lanyard in return for your passport, and then you are permitted to enter the palace gate.
You walk through the narrow gate, shared by both cars, people and scooters, past the military guard and into the palace grounds. From here you have two options, you can take a scooter or taxi to the central palace, or you can walk. If you decide to walk like we did, you must stick to the single road way to the palace. The military will enforce this. The palace grounds are still an active military base, so you are not allowed to wander. You are also not allowed to take any photos or video until you have reached the central palace. We walked to the central palace, and it took 10-15 minutes. Cont'd on our website

Thanks for watching!

Nyaung Shwe, Myanmar | Canon HD | Virtual Trip

The city of Nyaungshwe

Once you arrive at the Shwenyaung station, tuks tuks, taxis and other strange machines await you at the exit to take you to the nearest town to Inle Lake: Nyaungshwe, located about ten kilometers away. The race is negotiated at 4 dollars and after 10 minutes of racing, the tuk tuk stops at the checkpoint where you have to pay 10 dollars or 10 euros or the equivalent in Kyats. This entry fee is valid for one week And allows you to stroll around the lake..Once in Nyaungshwe, with your bike you will be able to overtake this checkpoint in the other direction, get out of town so without having to repay or show your pass.

Nyaungshwe is a very charming little town, very very dusty, the roads are still dirt in 2016, and every motorbike, car or bus raises a cloud of dust on its way that pierces the eyes. The roads are also smashed, , It is felt especially on arrival in tuk tuk. There are a lot of tourists at Inle Lake, much more than in Yangoon for example, the size of the city and the concentration of restaurants and inns make that one crosses All the time everywhere. Here we eat a lot more western, pancake, pizza, but it is of course possible to eat rice and local dishes everywhere too. More tourists also means more expensive fares.

Countryside - Explore Myanmar

This video made from the visit to Shwe Bo, Yee U Gyi, Halin countryside in Myanmar. These are rich in farm land with lot of historic sites.
Here we tried to show beauty of village, lifestyle, foods, culture and some historic places. Very humble and kind people with a life philosophy that Work hard and donate harder for betterment of this life and after.

This is simple and beautiful Myanmar.

Pyu Ancient City ( Halin , Shwebo , Myanmar )

Halin or Halingyi : located in the Mu valley, one of the largest irrigated regions of precolonial Burma, is the northernmost Pyu city so far discovered. The earliest artifacts of Halin—city's wooden gates—are radiocarbon dated to 70 CE. The city was rectangular but with curved corners, and brick-walled. Excavated walls are approximately 3.2 km long on the north-south axis and 1.6 km on the east-west. At 664 hectares, the city was nearly twice the size of Beikthano. It has four main gates at the cardinal points, and a total of 12 gates, based on the zodiac. A river or canal ran through the city. Traces of a moat exist on all sides except the south, where it was probably not needed, as land was dammed there to create reservoirs.
This design of the city influenced the city planning of later Burmese cities and the Siamese city of Sukhothai. For example, the number of gates and configuration was also found in subsequent major Burmese capitals such as the 11th century Pagan and 19th century Mandalay. The city's configuration was also found at other contemporary cities such as Maingmaw and Beikthano in the Pyu realm and Danyawaddy and Wethali in Arakan as well as later cities such as Sukhothai, which emerged over a millennium later. Structural remains of temples at Halin show that the design of city's temples influenced the 11th to 13th century temples at Pagan. Excavated artifacts point to Halin's Pyu script to be the earliest writing in the Pyu realm (and in Burma). It was based on an earlier version of the Brahmi script (Mauryan and Guptan). Inscriptions at Sri Ksetra show a later version of the same script.
Known for the production of salt, a highly prized commodity in the first millennium, Halin was superseded by Sri Ksetra as the premier Pyu city-state circa 7th century. By the Chinese accounts, Halin remained an important Pyu center until the 9th century when the Pyu realm came under repeated attacks from the Nanzhao Kingdom. The Chinese records state that the city was destroyed by the Nanzhao warriors in 832 CE, with 3000 of its inhabitants taken away. However, radiocarbon dating reveals human activity to about 870 CE, nearly four decades after the reported sack of the city.
