Shusha fortress 🏰, Nagorno Karabakh (şuşa qalası / Շուշի բերդ) Qarabağ

Shusha fortress (Azerbaijani: şuşa qalası; Armenian: Շուշի բերդ) the fortress walls surrounding the historical center of Shusha. Newly established castle town was called Panahabad fortress named after Panah Ali Khan who was the founder of the fort. In later years, Shusha was just called Fortress. After a certain period of time, people named it as Shusha fortress and later it was simply called Shusha. The name of Shusha was probably derived from the name of Shushekend village which was near the location where the fort was built.
Molla Panah Vagif, poet and also the Vizier of Khan of Karabakh, personally supervised and controlled the construction of Shusha fortress. Hasan Ali Khan Garadaghi, the historian of Karabakh Khanate, commented that Several buildings in Shusha as well as Shusha fortress was built under the direct supervision of Molla Panah Vagif.
The area where Shusha fortress was built is a mountainous plateau in the form of amphitheater from the west with numerous hills and rifts. At present, the territory of Shusha city consists of plateau with a hill located lengthwise in its center. The architecture of Shusha fortress represents basic principles of architecture of feudal period in terms of both the choice of location, structural planning and the artistic appearance of the fort.
Shusha fortress had three main gates: Ganja Gate, İrevan Gate and Aghoghlan Gate. The names of all these gates are often mentioned in historical sources, as well as in all the drawn Shusha plans of 19th-century.
After the collapse of the centralized state in Iran and Azerbaijan in the mid-18th century, independent khanates started to appear in the territory of Azerbaijan and one of them was The Karabakh Khanate. Each of these khanates, which was implementing their own policies and trying to develop their economy, had a center to control the areas that was under their supervisory. This period was associated with several complicated events in the military-political history of the South Caucasus. Some of them are as follows:
1. Forty Years’ War (1709–1749) had not yet ended.
2. The wars and the uprisings of peasants in feudal society were frequent.
3. The region was being attacked by Turks and Iranians.
In such a situation, khanates were mainly in need of a well-fortified Shusha as a capital city because they had to maintain their territorial integrity and political independence. Therefore, the construction of such fortified cities was primarily driven by the demand of military-political situation.
The demand for the establishment of fortified cities had a impact on the development of Azerbaijani architecture in the second half of the 18th century and led to the emergence of a special type of city that were protecting the local judge and his family's property. Shusha was one of such cities due to the nature of city building. E. Avalov has divided the cities built during that period into two groups. The first group includes the cities such as Shamakhi, Baku, Tabriz, Nakhchivan, Ganja formed in Ancient period or in Early Middle Ages. While these cities did not undergo needed reconstruction and restoration and preserved their main historical and architectural view, minor cities, however, were reconstructed, expanded and fortified when they were selected as capitals of khanates. Such minor cities, which was built in a short period of time, attracted Artisans, clergymen, khan's noblemen and Merchants from a variety of areas. Shusha was such a kind of city built by Panahali khan who was from the nomadic Javanshir clan.
Panahali khan who founded The Karabakh Khanate with the support of the Javanshir clan and Otuzikiler dynasty in 1747 decided to build a fortress which would help him to control this large country extending from The Aras River to Lake Goycha, from The Tartar River to Meghri, Tatev and Sisian and including the areas of Karabakh, Zangezur and Bargushad. In 1748, Panah Ali Khan ordered to start the construction of Bayat castle near Barda. Panah Ali Khan were willing to build a fortress where his family can live and he can protect the people in the case of invasion by enemies. Therefore, Bayat castle was surrounded by deep ditches and thick exterior walls.
Bayat castle, which was built with fired bricks, features Khan's palace, mosque, bazaar, bath and houses. Following the settlement of Khan's family in Bayat, artists from nearby villages as well as Ardabil and Tabriz moved here. However, Bayat did not remain as Khan's residence for a long time. Despite numerous reinforcement efforts, the castle was still weak against the attacks of foreigners. Taking into account the threat, Panah Ali Khan started to look for a strategically more favorable area.

Shusha Mosque Nagorno Karabakh ❤️ (şuşa məscid Qarabağ)

Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque (Azerbaijani: Yuxarı Gövhar Ağa məscidi; Armenian: Գյովհար Աղայի վերին մզկիթ) is a Shi'i mosque located in Shusha (şuşa, Shushi city), in the disputed region of Nagorno Karabakh. It is currently under the control of the de facto Republic of Artsakh since the capture of Shusha on 8 May 1992. Shusha's mosque also bears the name Boyuk Juma (Great Mosque) of Govhar Agha (Azerbaijani: Gövhər Ağanın Cümə məscidi; Armenian: Գյովհար Աղայի վերին մզկիթ).
The Yukhari Govhar Agha means The Upper Govhar Agha Mosque in Azerbaijani, referring to location of the mosque in the upper section of Shusha city and to distinguish it from the Ashaghi Govhar Agha Mosque, the same-name mosque located in lower section of Shusha. Both mosques are considered symbols of Shusha and masterpiece of Eastern architecture. The Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque is located on Shusha's main square, Yusif Vazir Chamanzaminli street and makes up a big part of architectural complex including madrasa, shops and houses built by the same architect. According to historian and author of Karabakh name, Mirza Jamal Karabakhi, construction of the mosque was started with orders of Ibrahim Khalil Khan in 1768 but was stopped for a long time. The construction was then restarted and completed in 1883–1885 by architect Karbalayi Safikhan Karabakhi ordered by Govhar Agha, daughter of Ibrahim Khalil Khan.
The prayer hall of Shusha's Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque is a three-nave in a square shape split by 6 stone columns. The three-beam veranda in the northern section of Shusha' s mosque gives it a rectangular form. The mosque has two minarets. The balconies used to host women's premises of the prayer hall. The interior of the prayer hall gets light from dual windows. The two minarets by the facade make up the veranda. The building of the mosque was constructed out of stone while the two minarets are made of bricks. The minarets have cylindric forms with horizontal belts with each section laid in distinguishing brick patterns. The same construction pattern can be viewed in most of the mosques throughout Karabakh built by Kerbalayi Safi Khan Karabakhi.
In Soviet times the Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque was closed and used as a museum, but reopened as a functioning mosque in 1988. After the capture of Shusha by Karabakhi Armenian forces in 1992, stopped functioning. Following a minor restoration of the Shusha's mosque in 2008–2009 officials from Nagorno Karabakh Ministry of Economy ordered a restoration project, hiring Iranian experts to carry out the works. Azerbaijani officials expressed their unhappiness with the restoration project, with the Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations Gunduz Ismayilov claiming that Armenia’s intention to restore the historical Azerbaijani mosque in Shusha is an attempt to cover up the vandalism it did to Azerbaijani cultural-religious monuments in the occupied territories.
After several years of restoration work, the Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque, neighboring madrasa, and park were formally opened for tourism on October 2019. The project was undertaken by the Initiative for Development of Armenia (IDeA) Foundation with the support of private donations, the largest of whom being Kazakh businessman Kairat Boranbayev.
The complex will be used as an Armenian - Iranian Cultural Center. Notably, there is no mention of the former Azeri presence and the complex is presented as an Iranian mosque.

Shusha (Azerbaijani: Şuşa; Armenian: Շուշի, romanized: Shushi) is the centre of the Shusha District of Azerbaijan. Situated in the Karabakh mountains, Shusha was a recreation resort in the Soviet era.
According to some sources the town of Shusha was founded in 1752 by Panah Ali Khan. From the mid-18th century to 1822 Shusha was the capital of the Karabakh Khanate. Shusha became one of the cultural centers of the South Caucasus after the Russian conquest of the Caucasus region in the first half of the 19th century over Qajar Iran. Over time, Shusha became a city and a home to many Azerbaijani intellectuals, poets, writers and especially, musicians (e.g., the ashiks, mugham...).
Other sources suggest that Shusha served as a town and an ancient fortress in the Armenian principality of Varanda during the Middle Ages and through the 18th century. Shusha was one of the two main Armenian cities of the Transcaucasus and the center of a self-governing Armenian principality from medieval times through the 1750s. Shusha also had religious and strategic importance to the Armenians, housing the Ghazanchetsots Cathedral, the church of Kanach Zham, etc, and serving (along with Lachin ) as a land link to Armenia.

🥽 VR Tour | Ghazanchetsots Cathedral | Shushi, Nagorno-Karabakh 🇦🇲 🇦🇿【GoPro VR Travel | 360 Video】

A 360° GoPro VR video of the Armenian Apostolic Church seat of the Diocese of Artsakh: Ghazanchetsots Cathedral, in Shushi.

Built between 1868 and 1887, the cathedral was consecrated in 1888. It was restored in the aftermath of the Nagorno-Karabakh War and reconsecrated in 1998. Standing 35m high, Ghazanchetsots is one of the largest Armenian churches in the world.

The political status of the Nagorno-Karabakh region remains unresolved. Since 1991, it has been largely controlled by the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh, a de facto independent entity. The region, however, is internationally recognized as de jure part of Azerbaijan, although it has not exercised power over most of the region since 1991. Since the end of the Nagorno-Karabakh War in 1994, representatives of the governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group on the region's disputed status.

Hammer and sickle COMMUNIST monument in Shusha, Nagorno Karabakh SOVIET

Shusha (Azerbaijani: Şuşa; Armenian: Շուշի, romanized: Shushi) is a city and the centre of the Shusha District of Azerbaijan. Situated at an altitude of 1,400–1,800 metres (4,600–5,900 ft) in the Karabakh mountains, Shusha was a mountain recreation resort in the Soviet era.
According to some sources the town of Shusha was founded in 1752 by Panah Ali Khan. From the mid-18th century to 1822 Shusha was the capital of the Karabakh Khanate. The town became one of the cultural centers of the South Caucasus after the Russian conquest of the Caucasus region in the first half of the 19th century over Qajar Iran. Over time, it became a city and a home to many Azerbaijani intellectuals, poets, writers and especially, musicians.
Other sources suggest that Shusha served as a town and an ancient fortress in the Armenian principality of Varanda during the Middle Ages and through the 18th century. It was one of the two main Armenian cities of the Transcaucasus and the center of a self-governing Armenian principality from medieval times through the 1750s. It also had religious and strategic importance to the Armenians, housing the Ghazanchetsots Cathedral, the church of Kanach Zham, two other churches, a monastic convent, and serving (along with Lachin district to the west) as a land link to Armenia.
Throughout modern history, Shusha mainly fostered a mixed Armenian Azerbaijani population. Following the Shusha massacre in 1920 by Azerbaijani forces, the Armenian half of the population of Shusha was mostly killed or expelled, and Shusha reduced to a town with a dominant Azerbaijani population. After the capture of Shusha in 1992 by Armenian forces during First Nagorno Karabakh War, its population diminished dramatically again and became exclusively Armenian.
Between May 1992 and November 2020, Shusha was under the de facto control of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh and administered as part of its Shushi Province. On 8 November 2020, Azerbaijani forces retook the city during the 2020 Nagorno Karabakh War following a three-day long battle.
Shusha literally means glass, and derives from Persian Shīsha. According to the Oxford Concise Dictionary of World Place-Names, when Iranian ruler Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar approached the town with his army, he reportedly told to Ibrahim Khalil Khan:
God is pouring stones on thy head. Sit ye not then in thy fortress of glass.
Panahabad (City of Panah), Shusha's previous name, was a tribute to Panah Ali Khan, the first ruler of the Karabakh Khanate.
According to Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary the town's name comes from a nearby village Shushikent, which literally means Shusha village in Azerbaijani language.

The hammer and sickle (Unicode: ☭) (Russian Серп и молот Sickle and Hammer) is a symbol represent proletarian solidarity – a union between the peasantry and working-class. It was first adapted during the Russian Revolution, the hammer representing the workers and the sickle representing the peasants.
After World War I (which Russia withdrew from in 1917) and the Russian Civil War, the hammer and sickle became more widely used as a symbol for labor within the Soviet Union and for international proletarian unity. Hammer and sickle taken up by many communist movements around the world, some with local variations. Today, even after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the hammer and sickle remains commonplace in Russia and other former union republics, but its display is prohibited in some other former communist countries as well as in countries where communism is banned by law. The hammer and sickle also remains commonplace in countries like Vietnam and China.
An alternative example is the combination of a hammer and a plough, with the same meaning. In Ireland, the symbol of the plough remains in use. The Starry Plough banner was originally used by the Irish Citizen Army, a socialist republican workers' militia. James Connolly, co-founder of the Irish Citizen Army with Jack White, said the significance of the banner was that a free Ireland would control its own destiny from the plough to the stars. A sword is forged into the plough to symbolise end of war with the establishment of a Socialist International. This was unveiled in 1914 and flown by the Irish Citizen Army during the 1916 Easter Rising
In 1917, Vladimir Lenin and Anatoly Lunacharsky held a competition to create a Soviet emblem. The winning was a hammer and sickle on top of a globe in rays of the sun, surrounded by a wreath of grain and under a five-pointed star, with the inscription proletarians of the world, unite! in 6 languages (Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Georgian, Armenian and Azerbaijani)
