HUDDERSFIELD TOWN CENTRE

We visit Huddersfield Town Centre near Leeds for a look around this West Yorkshire town.
Huddersfield is a town in the North of England close to Leeds and Bradford.
You can also watch our Leeds City Centre tour here -

Gimbal Walk TV hasn't filmed Huddersfield before so we were excited to see what Huddersfield Town Centre was like for shopping, eating, drinking and just for a visit so come with us on this walking tour to check out what the town has to offer.

Huddersfield is a town situated in West Yorkshire in the North of England. Places close by include Brighouse, Sowerby Bridge, Leeds, Manchester and Burnley. Huddersfield is a large market town and is actually in the borough of Kirklees. It's not far to the Pennines from here. It is a town that was a big mill town in the industrial revolution.

Our Huddersfield tour takes us along New Street, down Ramsden Street to Huddersfield Town Hall and Huddersfield library. We then head into the Piazza Shopping Centre before returning to New Street, walking through the shopping streets lined with shops, businesses, takeaways and shopping arcades.

We also visit Market Place, Kirkgate, Westgate and also John William Street.

Surprisingly there doesn't seem to be much in the way of a Visit Huddersfield town tourism website trying to promote the town?

Here's what one website does say though This quirky corner of West Yorkshire, combines inspirational scenery with traditional market towns. A unique destination for short breaks, family fun or a romantic getaway; explore the riverside villages of Holmfirth and Marsden, culturally diverse Huddersfield or discover the infamous pie town Denby Dale.

With superb scenery, landscapes and walking and cycling opportunities, Holmfirth and the surrounding areas are the perfect place if you prefer a relaxing country walking holiday to bustling cities.

With picturesque moors, the picture-postcard town of Holmfirth, or the towpaths of the canals and rivers of the Holme Valley few regions offer the richness of choice and the striking contrasts to discover the breath-taking outdoors of the Yorkshire Pennines.

So it seems the websites discussing Huddersfield Town Centre are actually advising you to get out of it and go somewhere else?

I did find this on the Visit England website:

Immerse yourself in this creative town, rich in culture, stories, international food and heritage. Grab a free walking trail and off you go!

For a cheap holiday in the UK, you can’t beat Huddersfield in West Yorkshire – home to grand listed buildings and small independent shops, the birthplace of the Rugby League, a place for radicals from the Luddites to the Sex Pistols and a town rich in creativity, stories and heritage.

The town brims with culture, with plenty of free museums to choose from. Huddersfield Art Gallery showcases British art from the past 200 years or you can celebrate all things literary at Huddersfield Literature Festival in May and delve into pre-history at the Tolson Museum.

When it comes to free things to do with the family, there’s live music and children’s creative workshops at Upmarket Sundays. Dip your toes in the water at the beautiful Greenhead Park or stand atop Castle Hill for glorious far-reaching spring views. And best of all, it’s all free. Absolutely free.

Shepley Station 25/2/19

We visit the station of Shepley on the Huddersfield to Barnsley Line, the station sees a almost hourly services throughout the day due to it being a mostly one track branch line. Services are all operated by Northen Rail and the line sees no freight services whatsoever.

We are diving back through the archives to see how much footage we had recorded but never was used so please don't mind the sporadic placing of the videos at the moment!

Forgotten Railways: Shelley to Beetoomba

We take a drive from what was once the highest point on the Victorian Railways network near Shelley, to the next station Beetoomba. The old line is earmarked for development as a rail trail, but for now is used as a forest road. There are a few bridges along the way that are impassable, so detours are needed. The final shot is a drone flyover of the former Beetoomba station area.
