BELFAST City Guide | Northern Ireland | Travel Guide
Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland and one of the most popular travel hubs in the United Kingdom. Around 2.5 million tourists visit Belfast each year.
Belfast is split by the Peace Wall, a physical barrier between the predominantly Protestant and unionist area of East Belfast, and the predominantly Catholic and nationalist area of West Belfast. The Troubles, a time of sectarian warfare and brutality in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to the late 1990s, are responsible for this separation.

BELFAST TERROR TOUR: 7 troubles locations in the city centre
Gain a fascinating insight into Northern Ireland’s most recent conflict with DC Tours.
The Troubles was an ethno-nationalist conflict in Northern Ireland that lasted about 30 years from the late 1960s to 1998. Also known internationally as the Northern Ireland conflict, it is sometimes described as an irregular waror low-level war.
The conflict began in the late 1960s and is usually deemed to have ended with the Good Friday Agreement of 1998.
Although the Troubles mostly took place in Northern Ireland, at times violence spilled over into parts of the Republic of Ireland, England and mainland Europe.
Today, Northern Ireland is a fairly peaceful place and there are now educational tours which explain the conflict.
DC’s city centre tour ‘A History of Terror’ is the No.1 Belfast walking tour. The tour explains the history of the Troubles and the path to peace. It was ranked the No.4 Experience in the UK at the TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards in 2019.

Amazing things to do in and around BELFAST | N Ireland | Travel Guide
Want a stunning weekend break? Then join us as we show you Belfast and the Causeway Coastal Route, on this Northern Ireland road trip! Amazing things to do in and around BELFAST
Visiting the Game of Thrones Dark Hedges, The Giants Causeway, Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Titanic, Mount Stewart, sample the nightlife at some of the famous pubs in the Belfast City Centre and much more.
Belfast has stepped it up a gear and is now truly a fantastic destination for a weekend break. With flights from Europe at reasonable prices, you can bag a great deal within a low budget.
We hired a car to allow us to travel further out of the city and within just a 2 hours radius there are many attractions and beautiful and stunning locations/views.
We drove the Causeway coastal route in a loop so that we ended up back in Belfast at the end of the first day. Maps and links are in the video and below.
Setting out at 8am we started at the Dark Hedges, this enabled us to arrive at the Giants Causeway at 9.15am close to opening and to try and avoid the crowds.
We spent a few hours walking the coastal trails before the weather turned so we moved on by 10 miles to Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge. . Torr Head was our next stop, with views over to Scotland and the Mull of Kintyre.
Back in Belfast for the evening we sampled some Guinness and visited a few of the famous pubs in the Cathedral Quarter. It's very lively here and worth checking out the area. There is lots of choices.
On Sunday we started the day with an Ulster Fry at Maggie May's before driving the Shankill road to look at the murals. The Titanic Museum is £19 and at that price, you want to make sure you give yourself a few hours to see all the artefacts and outdoor locations. Sadly we didn't feel we had enough time to see it all and so passed on the entrance fee and walked around the free open areas. An excuse to come back and do this attraction properly sometimes!
To end our weekend, we had a beer at The Crown pub in the city centre. It's a very famous Victorian pub with all its original fixtures and fittings. See if you can find a free booth to sit and drink in!

SHANKILL TOWN in Ireland
Shankill (Irish: Seanchill, meaning 'Old Church') is an outlying suburb of Dublin, Ireland, situated in the administrative area of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown. Located in the south-east of the historic County Dublin, close to the border with County Wicklow, it has a population of 14,257 (2016 census). It runs from the coast, between Loughlinstown and Bray, inland towards the foothills of the Dublin Mountains. Shankill borders Rathmichael, as well as Loughlinstown, Killiney, Ballybrack and Bray in County Wicklow.
It is part of the Civil Parish of Rathmichael, and contains the formerly separate district of Shanganagh, and in its southern parts, the locality of Crinken.

Belfast, Northern Ireland City Guide! Complete firsthand travel guide - everything you need to see!
Personally, I love Belfast. I've been there twice and both times I had a fantastic time. It doesn't have many world-famous buildings or landmarks, but what it does have is some captivating history and beautiful nearby scenery. In this video, I'll tell you everything you need to plan an amazing trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland.
To start, you have the city with things to see like Belfast City Hall, Albert Memorial Clock, Big Fish (Salmon of Knowledge), Titanic Belfast, and more. But you also need to do the incredible Black Cab tours where you'll learn about the Troubles in Belfast, see the Belfast Political Murals and Peace Wall, visit the Shankill Road and Falls Road neighborhoods, and get an incredible history lesson. Make sure to also plan a day trip to the Giant's Causeway for you can visit Carrickfergus Castle, see the beautiful Antrim Coast, walk across the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, hear a tale about fighting giants, and see the breathtaking rock formations at the Giant's Causeway. It's a great city to visit for a few days and I don't think you'll regret it.

[4K] Falls Road and Shankill Road Peace Line #belfast
The most famous of the ‘peace walls’, as they’re now known, divides the Falls and Shankill Roads in the western part of Belfast.Visit today and still, on the Shankill Road side, Union Jack flags hang from houses and poles on the street. Ropes tied across the main street proudly display flags with the British colours and images of the Queen are everywhere.
It’s impossible not to know the loyalty of the people who live in this part of the city.
Go to the other side of the wall, through one of the open gates, and there’s not a trace of red, white and blue. On the Falls Road side, you might expect to see Irish flags – and there are some – but there are actually more Palestinian flags or images of Spain’s Basque country.
It runs for several kilometres and is interrupted at several junctions by enormous metal gates across roads. At the height of the troubles, these were used as security checkpoints. Today, some of them are still locked at night to control movement.
Although temporary peace walls were built in Belfast in the 1920s (in Ballymacarett) and 1930s (in Sailortown), the first peace lines of the Troubles era were built in 1969, following the outbreak of civil unrest and the 1969 Northern Ireland riots. They were initially built as temporary structures, but due to their effective nature they have become wider, longer, more numerous and more permanent. Originally few in number, they have multiplied over the years, from 18 in the early 1990s to at least 59 as of late 2017; in total they stretch over 34 kilometres (21 miles), with most located in Belfast. They have been increased in both height and number since the Good Friday Agreement of 1998. Three-quarters of Belfast's estimated 97 peace lines and related structures (such as gates and closed roads) are in the north and west of the city. These are also the poorer and more disadvantaged areas of Belfast. 67% of deaths during the sectarian violence occurred within 500 metres (550 yd) of one of these interface structures.
The stated purpose of the peace lines is to minimise inter-communal violence between Catholics (most of whom are nationalists who self-identify as Irish) and Protestants (most of whom are unionists who self-identify as British).
The peace lines range in length from a few hundred metres (yards) to over 5 kilometres (3 mi). They may be made of iron, brick, steel or a combination of the three and are up to 8 metres (25 feet) high. Some have gates in them (sometimes staffed by police) that allow passage during daylight but are closed at night.
In recent years, they have even become locations for tourism. Black taxis now take groups of tourists around Belfast's peace lines, trouble spots and famous murals.
The most prominent peace lines in the past few years separate the nationalist Falls Road and unionist Shankill Road areas of West Belfast; the nationalist Short Strand from the unionist Cluan Place areas of East Belfast, the unionist Corcrain Road and the nationalist Obins Drive in Portadown and the unionist Fountain Estate and nationalist Bishop Street area of Derry.
In 2008, a public discussion began about how and when the peace lines could be removed.[9] Belfast City Council agreed to develop a strategy regarding the removal of peace walls on 1 September 2011. At the end of 2011, several local community initiatives resulted in the opening of a number of interface structures for a trial period. A study was released in 2012 indicating that 69% of residents believe that the peace walls are still necessary because of potential violence.
In January 2012, the International Fund for Ireland launched a Peace Walls funding programme to support local communities who want to work towards beginning to remove the peace walls. In May 2013, the Northern Ireland Executive committed to the removal of all peace lines by mutual consent by 2023.
In 2017, the Belfast Interface Project published a study entitled Interface Barriers, Peacelines & Defensive Architecture that identified 97 separate walls, barriers and interfaces in Belfast. A history of the development of these structures can be found at the Peacewall Archive.
In September 2017, the Northern Ireland Department of Justice published its Interface Programme, established to deliver the commitment made by the Northern Ireland Executive to remove all Interface structures by 2023 under the Together: Building a United Community Strategy.
In September 2019, a series of events were held in Belfast to mark the anniversary of 50 years of peace lines in the city. This included an international conference alongside other events to discuss the past and possible future of the peace lines
