Khewra Salt Mine
The Khewra Salt Mine (or Mayo Salt Mine) is located in Khewra, north of Pind Dadan Khan, an administrative subdivision of Jhelum District, Punjab Region, Pakistan.
The mine is located in the Salt Range, an outer range of the Himalaya Mountains which rises from the Indo-Gangetic Plain. It is Pakistan's largest, the world's 2nd largest.
The mine is famous for its production of pink Himalayan salt, and is a major tourist attraction, drawing up to 250,000 visitors a year.
Its history dates back to its discovery by Alexander's troops in 320 BC, but it started trading in the Mughal era.
The salt reserves at Khewra were discovered when Alexander the Great crossed the Jhelum and Mianwali region during his Indian campaign.
The mine was discovered, however, not by Alexander, nor by his allies, but by his army's horses, when they were found licking the stones.
Ailing horses of his army also recovered after licking the rock salt stones. During the Mughal era the salt was traded in various markets, as far away as Central Asia.
The main tunnel at ground level was developed by Dr. H. Warth, a mining engineer, in 1872 during British rule.
After independence, the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation took over the mine, which still remains the largest source of salt in the country, producing more than 350,000 tons per annum of about 99% pure halite.
Estimates of the reserves of salt in the mine vary from 82 million tons to 600 million tons.

WORLD'S 2ND LARGEST SALT MINE IN PAKISTAN
The Khewra Salt Mine is world's 2nd largest salt mine, located in Khewra, north of Pind Dadan Khan, Jhelum District, Punjab Pakistan. The mine is in the Salt Range, Potohar plateau, which rises from the Indo-Gangetic Plain, and is the second largest in the world.
The mine is famous for its production of pink Khewra salt, often marketed as Himalayan salt, and is a major tourist attraction, drawing up to 250,000 visitors a year. Its history dates back to its discovery by Alexander's troops in 320 BC, but it started trading in the Mughal era. The main tunnel at ground level was developed by Dr. H. Warth, a mining engineer, in 1872 during British rule. After independence, the BMR took possession until 1956 and then PIDC owned the mines till 1965. After India-Pakistan war in 1965, the WPIDC took over the administration of salt mines and in 1974, the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation took over the mine, which still remains the largest source of salt in the country, producing more than 350,000 tons per annum[9] of about 99% pure halite. Estimates of the reserves of salt in the mine vary from 82 million tons to 600 million tons.
The pink salt, which often has a pinkish tint due to trace minerals, is primarily used as a food additive to replace refined table salt but is also used for cooking and food presentation, decorative lamps and spa treatments. It is primarily exported in bulk, and processed in other countries for the consumer market.

The area has a long history from the time of Alexander the Great's invasion (see Punjab (Pakistan)). The small town of Jalalpur Sharif is located in Pind Dadan Khan and is said to be where Alexander the Great's famous horse, Bucephalus is buried. This pind (from Punjabi word for village), is named after Dadan Khan a devoted Sufi saint from Awan tribe.

History of Pind dadan khan:
The Imperial Gazetteer of India, compiled over a century ago during British rule, describes the tehsil as follows:
Pind Dādān Khān Tahsīl.–Southern subdivision and tahsil of Jhelum District, Punjab, lying between 32°27' and 32°50' N. and 72°32' and 73°29' E., with an area of 875 square miles. It is bounded on the south-east by the Jhelum river, and is traversed in its northern portion by the Salt Range. The hills consist of two roughly parallel ranges about 6 miles apart, with a strip of richly cultivated and fairly level uplands between. The southern slopes of the hills are steep and barren. The rest of the tahsil consists of a belt of alluvial plain, a portion of which is much affected by saline deposits. The population in 1901 was 170,130, compared with 173,071 in 1891. It contains the town of Pind Dadan Khan ( population, 13,770), the headquarters; and 207 villages. The land revenue and cesses in 1903-4 amounted to 2.8 lakhs. KATAS and MALOT are places of considerable archaeological interest, the village of Jalalpur possesses historical importance, and the Mayo mine at Khewra is one of the chief sources of the supply of salt in India. Source of income here is agriculture. Pind dandan khan also has a small village in it's union council Dharyala Jalap named as Nandna or Baghan wala it is situated on hill top and has a historic fort where recently Prime minister Imran khan also visited and inaugurated National park due to importance of this place. This is the place where famous scientist Sir Al Biruni mathematically calculated radius of earth. “We have decided to preserve the site [Nandana Fort] and build infrastructure so it becomes accessible to tourists” Prime Minister Imran Khan said as he launched the heritage trail project at Al Biruni point in Baghan Wala village at Nandana Fort on Sunday.

How 800 Million Pounds of Himalayan Salt Are Mined Each Year | Big Business
Khewra Salt Mines are located in Pind Dadan Khan of Jhelum District of Punjab Pakistan. IT is 200km away from Islamabad and Lahore that can be accessed easily on M2 Motorway Lillah Interchange. It is one of the oldest salt mines of the world; first found by Alexandar's army in 320 BC. Commercially, it was developed in the Mughal Era. Dr. H. Warth has developed the first ground level tunnel, who happened to be a mining engineer in 1872 during the British times. Currently it is under the control of Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation that produces more than 300,000 tons per annum salt that is 99% pure halite. Current estimated salt reserves are 400 to 700 million tons.
Himalayan salt doesn't come from the Himalayas instead it is mined in Khewra Salt mines Pakistan.. The pink rocks are turned into table salt, lamps, and statues, sold at a premium in Western countries. But despite pink salt's growing popularity abroad, Pakistan, historically, has seen little of the profits.
Pink Himalayan salt is used in speciality foods, spa treatments, and even home design. 100 grams of it can cost $5 to $8, up to 20 times more than generic table salt. So, why is it so expensive?

Khewra Salt mine visit in Two Minutes | District Jhelum| Punjab | Pakistan
The Khewra Salt Mine (or Mayo Salt Mine) is located in Khewra, north of Pind Dadan Khan, an administrative subdivision of Jhelum District, Punjab Region, Pakistan, which rises from the Indo-Gangetic Plain. It is Pakistan's largest and oldest salt mine and the world's second largest. It is a major tourist attraction, drawing up to 250,000 visitors a year. Its history dates back to its discovery by Alexander's troops in 320 BC, but it started trading in the Mughal era. The main tunnel at ground level was developed by Dr. H. Warth, a mining engineer, in 1872 during British rule. After independence, the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation took over the mine, which still remains the largest source of salt in the country, producing more than 350,000 tons per annum of about 99% pure halite. Estimates of the reserves of salt in the mine vary from 82 million tons to 600 million tons.
The Khewra Salt Mine is also known as Mayo Salt Mine, in honour of Lord Mayo, who visited it as Viceroy of India. The mine is a part of a salt range that originated about 800 million years ago, when evaporation of a shallow sea followed by geological movement formed a salt range that stretched for about 300 kilometers (185 miles).
On the downfall of the Mughal empire, the mine was taken over by Sikhs. Hari Singh Nalwa, the Sikh Commander-in-Chief, shared the management of the Salt Range with Gulab Singh, the Raja of Jammu. The former controlled the Warcha mine, while the latter held Khewra. The salt quarried during Sikh rule was both eaten and used as a source of revenue.
In 1872, some time after they had taken over the Sikhs' territory, the British developed the mine further. They found the mining to have been inefficient, with irregular and narrow tunnels and entrances that made the movement of labourers difficult and dangerous. The supply of water inside the mine was poor, and there was no storage facility for the mined salt. The only road to the mine was over difficult, rocky terrain. To address these problems the government levelled the road, built warehouses, provided a water supply, improved the entrances and tunnels, and introduced a better mechanism for excavation of salt. Penalties were introduced to control salt smuggling.
While working with Geological Survey of India in the 1930s and 1940s, Birbal Sahni found evidence of angiosperms, gymnosperms and insects from the Cambrian period inside the mine.
Location
Khewra Salt Mine is situated in Pind Dadan Khan Tehsil of Jhelum District. Located about 200 km (125 miles) from Islamabad and Lahore, it is accessed via the M2 motorway, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) off the Lilla interchange while going towards Pind Dadan Khan on the Lilla road. The mine is in mountains that are part of a salt range, a mineral-rich mountain system extending about 200 km from the Jhelum river south of Pothohar Plateau to where the Jhelum river joins the Indus river. Khewra mine is about 288 meters (945 feet) above sea level and about 730 meters (2400 feet) into the mountain from the mine entrance. The underground mine covers an area of 110 km2 (43 sq. miles).
