Travel Guide - Zagreb - Croatia - Amazing Things to Do in Zagreb & Top Zagreb Attractions #zagreb
Discover with us the most amazing things to do in Zagreb and Top Zagreb attractions.
The region with this capital and largest city of Croatia has a rich history dating from Roman times. With more than 1 million inhabitants, Zagreb metropolitan area is known for its diverse economy, high quality of living, museums, and sporting and entertainment events.
The capital was once two towns, Gradec and the smaller Kaptol. By visiting the larger Gradec, you will immerse yourself in the medieval history of Zagreb. The Funicular public transport even leads to the raised hill, one of the world's shortest, with a track length of 66 meters. From 6.30 AM to 10 PM, the rides are every 10 minutes and take only 64 seconds.
Nearby you can admire 13th-century St. Mark's Church, one of the oldest architectural monuments in the city. On the roof, tiles are laid to represent the coat of arms of Zagreb. The church was radically reconstructed in the second half of the 14th century.
Combine visiting St Mark's Church with a historical performance in the square. A traditional change of the Guard of Honor by the Cravat Regiment is organized from April to October, a couple of times a month.
The second original medieval town, the eastern Kaptol, was inhabited mainly by clergy and today houses a majestic Neo-Gothic Cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and kings Saint Stephen and Saint Ladislaus. With a height of 108 meters, this is the second tallest building in Croatia and the most monumental sacral building in Gothic style southeast of the Alps. The cathedral holds a spectacular treasury with one of the county's wealthiest exhibit collections. Some of them are older than 900 years.
A 5-minute walk from the cathedral is Ban Jelačić Square, the city's central square. The square's history begins in 1641 and later made part of the downtown pedestrian zone. There are many medieval streets in the surroundings, an ideal place to buy souvenirs or Licitar Hearts, a traditional symbol of the country.
Are you looking for the best view in the area? Visit the mid-13th century fortress Medvedgrad, only 10 km from the center. Enjoy the unique panoramic view of the city from an elevation of over 500 meters. The defensive complex was built after Mongols invaded Zagreb in 1242 when the medieval city was destroyed and burned.
If you enjoy walking through beautiful city parks, visit English-style Maksimir Park. Opened in 1794, it was the first large public park in South-Eastern Europe. It forms part of the city's cultural heritage and is a habitat for many plant and animal species. The park also houses the city zoo with more than 275 animal species.
For art lovers, Zagreb definitely has a lot to offer. Start with a visit to The Art Pavilion. Established in 1898, it is the oldest gallery in Southeast Europe and the only purpose-built gallery in the city. The gallery has a total display area of 600 m squared and has organized more than 700 exhibitions throughout its history.
The Museum of Arts and Crafts is just a 12-minute walk from The Art Pavilion. The grand historicist palace from the 19th century is one of the first purpose-built edifices devised to merge the museum and school functions. On more than 2,000 m squared of museum space, you can find about 160,000 unique objects from the 4th to 20th centuries.
Right next to the complex is another interesting, if somewhat controversial, art museum, The Mimara Museum. Mr. Mimara, the original art collector, built his 3,700 artifacts collection by forging, looting, and swindling. According to some estimates, it is the greatest collection of fakes in the world.

TOP 20 THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN ZAGREB, CROATIA! (4K)
WARNING: THIS VIDEO ENDS WITH A LOUD BANG! Zagreb is the capital of Croatia, with a population of about one million people. Zagreb is where we started our Adventures Croatia ( (Call 1-800-818-8015 and mention my promo code AndysAwesome10 to get 10% off any trip) island hopping cruise. I found Zagreb to be a beautiful, really interesting city to explore, and what you're seeing is my Top 20 Things to See and Do in Croatia. Zagreb is divided by Lower Town and Upper Town, and there's plenty of great things to see in each area. We'll visit the heartbeat of Zagreb-Ban Jelačić Square, take a ride on the world's shortest funicular railway, see the architectural magnificence of the Croatian National Theatre and the nearby symbolic Well of Life Sculpture, explore King Tomislav Square, admire Zrinjevac Park, and visit four of Zagreb's unique, offbeat museums: the Museums of Hangovers, Illusions, Broken Relationships, and Chocolate. We then visit the Stomach of Zagreb, Dolac Market with its famous red umbrellas, walk down Radićeva Street with its many shops and restaurants, walk through Grič Tunnel, a WWII bomb shelter, hang out at Zagreb Welcomes You, a bronze model of the city, stand in front of the most recognizable landmark in the city, Zagreb Cathedral, walk through the Stone Gate with its chapel and painting of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus, learn about St. Mark's Church, known for its colorful tiled roof, and stand next to 13th century Lotrščak Tower, where we get a great view of Lower Town, and see and hear the loud cannon shot that is fired from the cannon every day at 12 noon.

CROATIAN NATIONAL THEATRE: ARCHITECTURAL JEWEL OF ZAGREB! (4K)
When I first saw pictures of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, Croatia, I knew I had to see it in person when I visited Zagreb. It's Neo-Baroque architectural style, along with its bold yellow color, is stunning. You'll learn about the history of the theatre, as well as the symbolism of the circular sculpture that is nearby. We also see some of the other interesting architectural styles of nearby buildings in Republic of Croatia Square, where the theatre is located.

Zagreb Travel Guide - Croatia Memorable Adventure
Zagreb Travel Guide - Croatia Memorable Adventure
Zagreb is a city in Central Croatia and the capital of Croatia. Zagreb is a vibrant city of more than 800K people (metropolitan area: more than 1.1 million). The city boasts a charming medieval 'old city' look with architecture and cobbled streets reminiscent of Vienna, Budapest, Prague and other Central European cities. In 2018 it was visited by about 1.2 million tourists, mainly from South Korea, United States, Germany, China and Italy. Enjoy the free WiFi available at the main square and around the national theatre.
The imposing mountain overlooking Zagreb (Medvednica) contains a preserved fortress (Medvedgrad) and fascinating views of the city. Being respectful in the fort is a good idea, since it is the site of the Altar of the Homeland memorial, dedicated to Croatian soldiers who died in the Homeland war. There are several historical festivals during the year, including knights tournaments.
Zagreb is split into seventeen administrative divisions called city districts:
Donji grad(Lower town)
Gornji Grad–Medveščak(Upper town–Medveščak)
Trnje
Maksimir
Peščenica – Žitnjak
Novi Zagreb – istok (New Zagreb–East)
Novi Zagreb – zapad (New Zagreb–West)
Trešnjevka – sjever (Trešnjevka–North)
Trešnjevka – jug (Trešnjevka–South)
Črnomerec
Gornja Dubrava (Upper Dubrava)
Donja Dubrava (Lower Dubrava)
Stenjevec
Podsused – Vrapče
Podsljeme
Sesvete
Brezovica
The historical part of the city to the north of Ban Jelačić Square is composed of the Gornji Grad and Kaptol, a medieval urban complex of churches, palaces, museums, galleries and government buildings that are popular with tourists on sightseeing tours. The historic district can be reached on foot, starting from Jelačić Square, the centre of Zagreb, or by a funicular on nearby Tomićeva Street. Each Saturday, (from April till the end of September), on St. Mark's Square in the Upper town, tourists can meet members of the Order of The Silver Dragon (Red Srebrnog Zmaja), who reenact famous historical conflicts between Gradec and Kaptol. It's a great opportunity for all visitors to take photographs of authentic and fully functional historical replicas of medieval armour.
Zagreb's numerous museums reflect the history, art and culture not only of Zagreb and Croatia, but also of Europe and the world.
The Archaeological Museum
Modern Gallery (Croatian: Moderna galerija)
Croatian Natural History Museum (1 Demetrova Street)
Technical Museum (18 Savska Street)

Things to do in ZAGREB | Croatia Travel Vlog
While traveling around Croatia, we spent some time in Zagreb and absolutely loved it! Zagreb is such a fun and quirky city with attractions like the scaled-to-size solar system and incredible musicians playing music around many of the street corners.
One of our favorite things about Zagreb was how much calmer it was than other Croatian towns like Split or Dubrovnik. We felt like we were experiencing more typical day-to-day activities as opposed to always being surrounded by tourists. It was a really nice change of pace!
We had to try some of the traditional food and were amazed at what we had! It was reminiscent of the Czech Republic (which was our favorite destination to get food from on our last trip) with its hearty stews and roast meat.
If you get the chance to visit, we would definitely recommend it!
If you are enjoying our content and want to help us make more, we would be so grateful if you considered buying us a coffee:

ZAGREB - Croatia Travel Guide | Around The World
Zagreb is the capital and the largest city of Croatia. It is located in the northwest of the country, along the Sava river, at the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain. Zagreb lies at an elevation of approximately 122 m (400 ft) above sea level. The estimated population of the city in 2018 is 809,773. The wider Zagreb metropolitan area includes the City of Zagreb and the separate Zagreb County bringing the total metropolitan area population up to 1,128,773. It is the biggest metropolitan area in Croatia, and the only one with a population of over one million.
Zagreb is a city with a rich history dating from the Roman times to the present day. The oldest settlement located in the vicinity of the city was the Roman Andautonia, in today's Ščitarjevo. The name Zagreb is recorded in 1134, in reference to the foundation of the settlement at Kaptol in 1094. Zagreb became a free royal town in 1242. In 1851 Zagreb had its first mayor, Janko Kamauf.
Zagreb has a special status in the Croatia's administrative division and is a consolidated city-county (but separated from Zagreb County), and is administratively subdivided into 17 city districts. Most of them are at a low elevation along the river Sava valley, whereas northern and northeastern city districts, such as Podsljeme and Sesvete districts are situated in the foothills of the Medvednica mountain, making the city's geographical image rather diverse. The city extends over 30 kilometres (19 miles) east-west and around 20 kilometres (12 miles) north-south.
The transport connections, concentration of industry, scientific, and research institutions and industrial tradition underlie its leading economic position in Croatia. Zagreb is the seat of the central government, administrative bodies, and almost all government ministries. Almost all of the largest Croatian companies, media, and scientific institutions have their headquarters in the city. Zagreb is the most important transport hub in Croatia where Central Europe, the Mediterranean and Southeast Europe meet, making the Zagreb area the centre of the road, rail and air networks of Croatia. It is a city known for its diverse economy, high quality of living, museums, sporting, and entertainment events. Its main branches of economy are high-tech industries and the service sector.
Zagreb is an important tourist centre, not only in terms of passengers travelling from the rest of Europe to the Adriatic Sea, but also as a travel destination itself. Since the end of the war, it has attracted close to a million visitors annually, mainly from Austria, Germany and Italy. However, the city has even greater potential as many tourists that visit Croatia skip Zagreb in order to visit the beaches along the Croatian Adriatic coast and old historic Renaissance cities such as Dubrovnik, Split, and Zadar. There are many interesting things for tourists in Zagreb, for example, the two statues of Saint George, one at the Republic of Croatia Square, the other at Kamenita vrata, where the image of Virgin Mary is said to be only thing that hasn't burned in the 17th-century fire. Also, there is an art installation starting in Bogovićeva street, called Nine Views. Most people don't know what the statue Prizemljeno Sunce (The Grounded Sun) is for, and just scrawl graffiti or signatures on it, but it's actually the Sun scaled down, with many planets situated all over Zagreb in scale with the Sun.
