The REDNECK CAPITAL of Indiana

This area of Indiana has had a reputation of being redneck for many years. In this video I drive around the most redneck pair of towns that reside in the state of Indiana, and I tell you more about them along the way. If you're hoping that this video will show you where you can grab some Mountain Dew when you're in the area... you're out of luck because there's no Mountain Dew in stock in any of the stores in this county.

Scott County Heritage Center and Museum (Scottsburg, Indiana)

FILMED IN HIGH DEFINITION
One of the most unusual museums in Southern Indiana! Granted, most 1800’s era Southern Indiana museums are haunted, let’s get that out of the way. But this museum also offers ghost tours, for those interested in the paranormal!

It’s also a museum about Scott County, including exhibits about the civil war, one of the first train robberies in United States history, it’s lost robbery money, and a connection to Elvis Presley! You can research your Scott County family genealogy as well as see antique items from Scott County’s past. This museum is pretty unique, to say the very least!

This Place USED To Be the CEMENT Capital Of the U.S. | Sellersburg, Indiana

Over the years things have changed here in good ole boy Sellersburg, and they’re like going to keep changing. Clark County saw a population growth rate of nearly 10 percent from 2010 to 2020 while Sellersburg grew by as much as 50 Percent. It’s probably a combination of newer housing developments along with Sellersburg annexing some of the surrounding unincorporated developed areas. Back in 1980, Sellersburg was a dinky little town home to only about 3,000 people. Go back to 1920 and Sellersburg had only 915.

The Most Colorful Place in Indiana

In this video, Matt sets out to find a perfect place to feed his birdseed to the birds in honor of his Step-Father, Jim, and what he finds is absolutely astounding! This mind-blowing place is known as the most colorful place in Indiana. We found this place in a very rural Loogootee, Indiana, less than two miles north of St. Mary's Church. Bill Larkin, the owner and creator of this amazing place, builds about 1,000 birdhouses a year, and gives them away for free to visitors! We are very glad we visited this place, and you will too.

Scottsburg Raintree Lake KOA Website:

From the moment you arrive, you'll be greeted with warm hospitality and excellent customer service. The staff at Scottsburg Raintree KOA are incredibly friendly and accommodating, and they go above and beyond to ensure that your stay is comfortable and enjoyable.

We found the Scottsburg Raintree KOA to be a little on the expensive side. For a pull through site one night cost around $90. Sites range between $65 and $90. Tent sites are close to $50. We were taken by surprise at first by the price in a rural Indiana location. Don’t let the price discourage you.

The pull through sites as you can see are similar to other KOAs. These sites are about average to better for width and lengths are good for big rigs. Sites are full hookup including water sewer and electric with 20 amp, 30 amp, and 50 amp electrical outlets. We even learned the campground is open all year for people traveling during colder months. The new owners have recently installed frost free, fresh-water hookups at a good number of sites to accommodate late and early season travelers. Speaking of the new owners they are really making improvements you won’t want to miss. This isn’t the old Jellystone Park that previous guests visited. The campsites have a crushed stone pad. In fact, the whole campground is paved with crushed stone and in great condition. The rest of your site will be grass and they are doing their best to grow grass and maintain the sites. Picnic tables are provided, too. Fire Pits are available at most sites for s’mores and those cool nights. More expensive sites will have a concrete patio with table and chairs and some even have propane grills.

We found the mini golf in good condition located at the campground entrance near the dog park. You could let your dog rest in the park while playing a round of golf. A little further into the campground in front of the office is an outdoor bowling alley and a chess yard game. The pond is teeming with fish and great for anglers to cast from shore. The campground also offers rentals of paddle sports including kayaks, canoes, paddle boats, and more. The playground is full of adventure with swings, merry go round, a teeter totter, slides, monkey bars, climbing towers, etc. There is also a sand volleyball court, horse shoes, cornhole, and basketball hoop for pickup games. The new saltwater pool, although closed in the Spring when we visited, looks great for those hot summer days.

Scottsburg KOA is an out in the country experience that is just 30 minutes from Louisville. Dream about staying here and driving into Louisville for the Bourbon trail, horse racing at Churchill Downs, ghost tours, walking tours, and the Louisville Slugger Museum to name a few. We looked around greater Louisville for a place to camp and most of the RV places were concrete and in sketchy parts of the City. We really didn’t want to spend the night in the city and with Scottsburg KOA you don’t have to either. Closer to the KOA you can spend time exploring the Scott County Heritage Center and Museum, visit the Goat Milk Stuff shop, and the Scottsburg Fire Museum and Training Center.

The Raintree KOA is conveniently located 4 miles off I-65 with easy off and easy on access at Exit 29 just north of the Kentucky/Indiana border.

The bathrooms are clean and showers are in good working order. The laundry attached to the campground office and store has newer, well maintained, coin operated, appliances. Speaking of the store, it is well stocked as most KOAs.
This KOA is great for dogs and pets. You will find a KampK9 near the entrance by the mini golf course. The fenced area is spacious and open providing off leash exploring for your dog. Pet waste bags are available for your use. The area is full of green space and trees for your dog walks, and the shoreline provides a great walking experience for you and your K9.

Pigeon Roost State Historic Site (Underwood, Indiana)

FILMED IN HIGH DEFINITION
This is another unusual place that many have never heard of. Pigeon Roost is the site of a horrible massacre, on September 3rd, 1812, in which Shawnee Indians killed twenty-five Indiana Territory settlers, including fifteen children. Two children were kidnapped. Only one family managed to escape the unspeakable carnage. The assailants were never found and brought to justice, despite a chase by armed men on horses. This was the first attack of the War of 1812, and was synchronized with other attacks.

Before this tragedy occurred, it was a peaceful village on the frontier, named after the large number of carrier pigeons that congregated in trees above the settlement. Coming here today still brings a sense of peace, and is a nice place for reflection.

Located on rural Highway US 31, between Scottsburg and Henryville, on the East side of US 31.

Biking the Big Four Bridge from Kentucky to Indiana!

Join me as I introduce a brand-new guest and cross the Ohio River from Kentucky into Indiana! That's right, we're expanding the geographical footprint of the channel by adding two new states and a whole lot of fun. We'll bike Waterfront Park in Louisville, Kentucky, and then traverse the historic Big Four Bridge into Jeffersonville, Indiana.

We fuel up with an awesome breakfast from Bub's Cafe in Elizabethtown, KY; we make some new friends along the way; my buddy Jeff wrecks his bike; and we top off the day with some locally-made butter pecan ice cream in downtown Louisville. What a day! Happy to have you along for the ride.

I explore, review and rate bike trails on this channel...and hopefully find a little joy in the journey. Thanks for watching!
