Number 7 THE EGG
The Egg
The Egg is a building on the Empire State Plaza that is easy to spot because of its unique shape. The
ultramodern performing arts centre is now one of the city's most famous landmarks. It has a full
schedule of shows and events every year. The oddly shaped building was built between 1966 and 1978.
It has two state-of-the-art theatres that are known for their great acoustics and cosy settings.
Number 6 USS SLATER DE-766
USS Slater DE-766
The huge USS Slater DE-766, which is now permanently docked along the Hudson River, is another very
interesting piece of history that you can see. It is the last destroyer escort ship from World War II that is
still in the US. It has great tours both above and below deck. After almost fifty years of service in the
American and Greek navies, the big grey destroyer was taken out of service in 1991 and is now a
museum ship.
Number 5 NEW YORK STATE CAPITOL
New York State Capitol
The New York State Capitol is an amazing building with Renaissance Revival-style architecture that is
both elegant and grand. During the week, visitors can see its equally impressive interior, which
dominates and defines one side of the Empire State Plaza. Since it was finished in 1899, the beautiful
building has been the home of New York's state government. The extravagant building was the most
expensive government building of its time. It took more than thirty years to build, and three teams of
architects worked on its four large floors and elegant Mansard roof.
Number 4 EMPIRE STATE PLAZA
Empire State Plaza
Some people have said that the architecture of Empire State Plaza is scary, but a lot of other people love
the variety of strange and unique buildings there. In addition to the beautiful state capitol and many
government offices, these include The Egg, Erastus Corning II Tower, and many others. The huge
complex was built between 1965 and 1976 at a huge cost to the city. It was the idea of Governor Nelson
Rockefeller.
Number 3 SCHUYLER MANSION
Schuyler Mansion
The Schuyler Mansion and the land around it are now a state historic site. They are just a short walk
south of the Empire State Plaza. Its rooms, which are full of antiques and personal items, give a
fascinating look into the life of the famous Revolutionary War General and early US senator. The
beautiful Georgian-style house was home to Philip J. Schuyler, his wife Catherine, and their many
children from 1763 to 1804.
Number 2 WASHINGTON PARK
Washington Park
Unlike the nearby Empire State Plaza, which is made of concrete, Washington Park is full of beautiful
plants and greenery. It has a lot of things to do outside, but it also has a lot of cool cultural events and
community festivals throughout the year. Even though the city's best park is always full of people, it is
the perfect place to relax, unwind, and get in touch with nature. It has big lawns, English-style gardens, a
beautiful lake, and lots of flowerbeds to stroll through. Along its paths are beautiful monuments like the
King Memorial Fountain, and here and there are playgrounds and playing fields.

Revealing Schuyler Flatts #history #culture #education #archaeology #travel #walkthrough #understand
Revealing Schuyler Flatts
I’ve been an historian/professor/archaeologist for over 20 years and as a sizable number of historians I can talk more about what happened 100 miles away & 100 years ago but never visit some of the history right around the neighborhood. Of course, I knew about the Schuyler family and the history of Albany, but this is my first visit to Schuyler Flatts and the ability to get personal with the history. You’ll find this an interesting visit and walk but realize that as we start the walk at the entrance to the park the original road past the farm would have been by the Hudson River. Where we start our walk would have been the “back” of the property, where the field slaves would have lived.
The Schuyler family farm site at the Flats is situated alongside the Hudson River near the northern border of today’s village of Menands. Originally the land was part of Rensselaerswyck and by the time of the American Revolution, Watervliet had been partitioned from Van Rensselaer manor, however the title to land resided with the Van Rensselaer family and to those who had obtained titles from them. During the eighteenth century the flat plain of the overall property was used by wartime armies as encampments. [1]
Philip Pieterse Schuyler may have purchased the farm site from the Van Rensselaers as early as 1672. By 1690, a farmhouse had been built on the property and was used by the widow of Philip Pieterse who left it to her son, Mayor Pieter Schuyler. After Pieter Schuyler died possession of the property went to his son, Phillipus Schuyler, his wife and cousin, Margarita Schuyler. In 1735 they added another large section. Madam Schuyler, who was a childless widow, lived there and shared her home with a number of nieces, nephews, and guests with the young Scottish-born author Anne Grant. Grant lived there during the 1760’s and later remembered her time at the flats. In 1764, Albany resident Cornelius Cadmus was identified as the tavernkeeper for Schuyler at the Flatts. On Margarita Schuyler's demise in 1782, the property appears to have passed to her nephew Peter Schuyler. [2]
The Schuyler farmhouse burned in either 1759 or 1763 but was hastily rebuilt for Madam Schuyler. During the reconstruction, a large wing was added facing the Hudson River and masking the view of the older structures from the east. Fifty years later, the Erie Canal cut across the property on the western side of the buildings. Experiencing various additions and modifications, Schuyler family members lived there until 1910. The property went out of the Schuyler family in 1929. The farm buildings deteriorated into adverse conditions, the site was vandalized and became an infamous and frequent meeting place for young people. It burned to the ground under suspicious circumstances in 1962. [3]
To learn more about the history of the Flatts you need to investigate the New Netherland Institute’s webpage: ARENT VAN CURLER & THE FLATTS - History, Archaeology & Art Illuminate a Life on the Hudson,

NEW YORK Top 10+ the most interesting sights of NYC (New York City), USA (with audioguide)
New York City associates with the following plot for the movie: Times Square with its grandiose skyscrapers and bright advertising billboards. Locals are rushing somewhere all the time with their coffee to go, a driver of yellow taxi is in a hurry to give a lift his passenger to the necessary spot to some important meeting and the most popular songs about New York are on mind!
— Taylor Swift — «Welcome to New York»,
— Alicia Keys — «New York»,
— Frank Sinatra — «New York New York»,
It seems like “deja vu”, like you’ve already seen it, though you’re at first time here. Maybe that’s because everyone of us was brought up on kind american movies, where genuine american life was filmed. And when you see all of these places with your own eyes, emotions just go wild.
New York City is a global financial, economic and cultural centre. It was founded by Dutch colonists in the early 17th century. Until 1664, the city was called “New Amsterdam”, then it was captured by the British and renamed into New York.
Prior to the conquest of European settlers, Indian tribes lived on its territory.
Today, the population of New York is more than 8 million people.
Probably all cultures and nationalities on our planet are mixed here.
New York City consists of 5 districts, which locals call boroughs:
-Manhattan,
-Brooklyn,
-Queens,
-Bronx,
-Staten Island
The most famous borough is Manhattan, which is noticeable even from the airplane.
Here are densely located all of the most famous sights.
The city has a very well-developed metro network, so it is most convenient and most profitable to travel on it. We recommend a walk around the city, so you could feel better its scale, rhythm and beauty. You’d better not go to Manhattan by car, because parking in downtown New York is too expensive. There is a lack of space for cars here.
We have collected the most interesting and exciting places in New York City.
These are:
Times Square - central square, heart of the city. It is one of the most visited sights all over the world.
Times Square is a symbol not only of New York but also of the entire United States of America.
Every year lots of people come here to celebrate the New Year.
The top world companies long for putting their advertising on the skyscrapers of Times Square.
Formerly known as Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed in 1904 after The New York Times moved its headquarters to the then newly erected Times Building.
Broadway - a very famous street, coming to Times Square, where concentrated lots of theatres with the most outstanding musicals like:
- Chicago
- Phantom of the Opera
- Lion King
- Aladdin and so on.
The musical is a symbol of American culture. You should definitely dress up your best festive attire, attend one of these performances and feel yourself a part of the American holiday and glamour.
Central Park is the lungs of New York, an incredibly beautiful large landscape park with beautiful nature, very friendly and always hungry squirrels.
The full day is not enough to see all the territory and sights of Central Park. It’s a beauty for the soul and eyes!
We were lucky to meet the raccoon in the middle of the Central park.
In front of Central Park is the legendary Plaza Hotel, which we know from the comedy film Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
American Museum of Natural History is also situated near the Central Park. To see the main exhibits of the museum and visit the performance at the Hayden Planetarium, you should spend the full day.
5th Avenue is the most well-known, most fashionable and most expensive street of New-York City. Here are situated the world’s best fashion boutiques (Chanel, Gucci, Burberry, Prada, Armani, Louis Vuitton) and best hotels.
Rockefeller Centre is a major office centre built along the 5th Avenue at the initiative of the oil magnates - Rockefeller family. The building is 872-foot tall or 266 meters.
