A DANGER ZONE in Suburban Chicago | Sauk Village, Illinois

Sauk Village is starting to show the early stages of a long economic downfall. The cities population peaked at nearly 11,000 back in 1980. Since then the population has dipped to around 9,500, with the strongest decline coming since 2020. There might not be as much abandonment and blight in Sauk Village today as there is in Harvey, Chicago Heights or Ford Heights, but I believe that there will be in only a matter of time. I explain why in this video.

Riverdale is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 13,549 at the 2010 census. The village shares its name with the bordering Riverdale neighborhood in Chicago.

Hazel Crest is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,100 at the 2010 census. Hazel Crest was first settled in 1870 in a farming community known as South Harvey. An enterprising newspaper editor named William McClintock moved here from Ohio in 1890, buying 80 acres (320,000 m2) from farmer Fred Puhrman.
McClintock built a depot for a local milk train and subsequently opened transportation opportunities to Chicago and beyond. The depot also served as the area's first real estate office, public meeting place, Sunday school, day school, and post office.
In 1900, the name was changed to Hazel Crest to reflect the large numbers of hazelnut bushes that grew on a rise of land just south of town. At the time, the southern border was 175th Street and the western edge of the village was Kedzie Avenue.
Hazel Crest was incorporated in 1912. Many of the families of the early residents still live in the village.
Over the years, significant developments have occurred because groups of residents joined together for common goals. Examples of this spirit range from the construction of the Community Church in 1894 to the 1984 adaptation of an elementary school building which has now become the Martin J. Kauchak Municipal Center, named for President Kauchak who served the village for twenty years (1973-1993).
Successive village presidents have been:
Dr Sol J. Rocke (1993-2001), Bill Browne (2001-2005), Dr Robert B. Donaldson (2005-2013) and Vernard L. Alsberry Jr. (2013–present)

Sauk Village is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States, with a small portion in Will County. The population was 10,506 at the 2010 census.

Driving Around Small Town Sauk City, Wisconsin in 4k Video

Filmed on Wednesday, August 16 2023, I drive around the village Sauk City, WI to see what's going on.

The story of Sauk City began in 1840 when Agoston Haraszthy, a charismatic Hungarian known to some as Count Haraszthy, purchased a plot of land by the Wisconsin River. Alongside his English-born business partner, Robert Bryant, Haraszthy expanded his land holdings and established the town initially named Széptáj, translating to beautiful place in Hungarian. The town underwent several name changes, becoming Westfield in 1849, and finally Sauk City in 1852, the same year it was incorporated as a village.

Sauk City has been a melting pot of cultures, most notably marked by the arrival of German immigrants in 1852. These immigrants founded the Sauk City Free Congregation, a liberal religious society that celebrated German music, literature, and culture. Park Hall, built in 1884, stands as a testament to this cultural flourishing, now serving as the Sauk County Free Congregation, a Unitarian Universalist fellowship.

The village gained national attention in a 1914 edition of Harper's Weekly magazine, naming it America's Foremost City. This acclaim was partly due to a pageant that drew 4,000 attendees, celebrating the village’s history and establishing the school as a central community hub.

A notable incident occurred on August 28, 1977, when an elephant from a circus caused a ruckus in a nearby nursing home. Miraculously, no one was injured despite the significant damage caused.

Sauk City is proud to be the birthplace of Culver's, a popular restaurant chain, with its first location opening on July 18, 1984. The village is also home to Arkham House, a publishing firm devoted to dark fantasy literature, and Cuca Records, a record label that has produced a variety of music genres.

Despite having a shared school system, police department, and hospital with the adjacent Prairie du Sac, Sauk City maintains its unique identity with separate fire departments and libraries. The community’s high school, Sauk Prairie High School, symbolizes the unity between the two villages, proudly represented by the eagle mascot.

Blue Island is a city in Cook County, Illinois, located approximately 16 miles south of Chicago's Loop. Blue Island is adjacent to the city of Chicago and shares its northern boundary with that city's Morgan Park neighborhood. The population was 23,706 at the 2010 United States Census. Blue Island was established in the 1830s as a way station for settlers traveling on the Vincennes Trace, and the settlement prospered because it was conveniently situated a day's journey outside of Chicago. The late-nineteenth-century historian and publisher Alfred T. Andreas made the following observation regarding the appearance of the young community in History of Cook County Illinois (1884), The location of Blue Island Village is a beautiful one. Nowhere about Chicago is there to be found a more pleasant and desirable resident locality.
Since its founding, the city has been an important commercial center in the south Cook County region, although its position in that respect has been eclipsed in recent years as other significant population centers developed around it and the region's commercial resources became spread over a wider area. In addition to its broad long-standing industrial base, the city enjoyed notable growth in the 1840s during the construction of the feeder canal (now the Calumet Sag Channel) for the Illinois and Michigan Canal and as the center of a large brick-making industry beginning in the 1850s, which eventually gave Blue Island the status of brick-making capital of the world. Beginning in 1883, Blue Island was also host to the car shops of the Rock Island Railroad. Blue Island was home to several breweries, who used the east side of the hill to store their product before the advent of refrigeration, until the Eighteenth Amendment made these breweries illegal in 1919. A large regional hospital and two major clinics are also located in the city.
Although initially settled by Yankee stock, Blue Island has been the point of entry for many of America's immigrants, beginning in the 1840s with the arrival of a large German population that remained a prominent part of the city's ethnic makeup for many years. By 1850, half of Blue Island's population was either foreign-born or the children of foreign-born residents.Later, significant groups came from Italy, Poland, Sweden and Mexico.

Back of the Yards is an industrial and residential neighborhood so named because it was near the former Union Stock Yards, which employed thousands of European immigrants in the early 20th century. Life in this neighborhood was explored in Upton Sinclair's 1906 novel The Jungle. The area was formerly part of the town of Lake until it was annexed by Chicago in 1889. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area was occupied largely by Eastern European immigrants and their descendants, who were predominantly ethnic Bohemian, Moravian, and Slovak. In the 1930s the activist Saul Alinsky did community organizing in this area, as its people suffered during the Great Depression. This work led to his founding the Industrial Areas Foundation in 1940, which trained community organizers. Jane Jacobs in her 1961 book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, cites the Back of the Yards as an area able to unslum in the 1960s, due to a beneficial set of circumstances. This included a stabilized community base with skilled members who were willing to trade work to upgrade housing, as well as active and well-led local social and political organizations. Jacobs often cited the Back of the Yards as a model for other depressed neighborhoods to follow to upgrade their communities. Some time after the 1970s, when the stockyard operations closed and the number of nearby jobs decreased, many people left to move to newer housing and work in the suburbs. The population of the neighborhood gradually reflected a new wave of settlement, predominantly Mexican-American.

On the west lies West Englewood, which is generally lumped in with Englewood by Chicagoans. It is located on the south side of Chicago.
