Huay Pix | Bacalar's Secret Lagoon | Traveling The Yucatan Off The Beaten Path

Hey there, ramblers & rovers! Welcome to Huay Pix, a hidden gem nestled in the enchanting Mexican State of Quintana Roo. This picturesque destination, located between the destinations of Chetumal and Bacalar near Mexico's southern border with Belize, offers a blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and serene surroundings. Whether you're seeking relaxation, adventure, or a taste of authentic Mexican culture, Huay Pix has something to offer for every traveler. Here's your comprehensive travel guide, complete with travel tips, to make the most of your visit:

GETTING THERE: The nearest major airport is Cancún International Airport (CUN), located approximately 195 kilometers (121 miles) from Huay Pix. From there, you can rent a car, take a bus, or arrange for a private transfer to reach Huay Pix. Otherwise, take a bus or a car towards Chetumal and get off by the road in Huay Pix.

BEST TIME TO VISIST: The ideal time to visit Huay Pix is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. This period offers pleasant weather, clear skies, and lower chances of rain.

ACCOMODATION: While Huay Pix is a relatively small and off-the-beaten-path destination, you'll find a range of accommodation options, including boutique hotels, eco-friendly lodges, and guesthouses. Consider booking your stay in advance, especially during peak travel seasons. The most viable option, however, is to go to Huay Pix from either Chetumal or Bacalar as a day trip.

LOCAL CURRENCY: The official currency in Mexico is the Mexican Peso (MXN). It's advisable to carry some cash.

TRANSPORTATION: Renting a car or hiring a local guide can be a convenient way to explore Huay Pix and its surrounding attractions. Alternatively, local buses and shared vans (collectivos) offer affordable transportation options.

THINGS TO DO:
SWIM IN THE LAGUNA DE LOS MILAGROS: The centerpiece of your visit, the stunning Huay Pix lagoon, offers crystal-clear turquoise waters and opportunities for kayaking, boating, swimming, and simply relaxing by the shore.

LOCAL CUISINE: Indulge in authentic Mexican flavors at local eateries. Try traditional dishes like cochinita pibil (slow-cooked pork), ceviche, and fresh seafood. Don't forget to savor some Yucatecan specialties!

RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL:
-Respect the environment and local culture. Follow Leave No Trace principles when visiting natural areas.
-Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the delicate marine ecosystem (these freshwater lagoons can easily become contaminated by commercial sunscreen brands).
-Opt for eco-friendly activities and accommodations to minimize your impact on the environment.

Your journey to Huay Pix promises a blend of relaxation, adventure, and cultural immersion. Embrace the tranquility of the lagoon, uncover the mysteries of Mexico's southern border regions, and create cherished memories in this hidden paradise. Plan ahead, respect the local community, and savor every moment of your unforgettable Huay Pix experience!

Mexico's BEST Ice-Cream? | LUSCIOUS LERDO, Durango | Comarca LAGUNERA'S Final Hurrah | Mexico Travel

LERDO, DURANGO, MEXICO - Hi everyone! This video is Part 17 (madness!) of my 2021 Mexico Travel series, and the final-part of a four-part series in and around Comarca Lagunera in area around Torreón, Coahuila and its sister city, Gómez Palacio, Durango. In this video we are visiting the luscious Lerdo, full of trees, colourful buildings, parks, and much more.

One of the reasons to visit Lerdo is Neveria Chepo, in other words (arguably), Mexico's best ice-cream? Chepo originates in Lerdo and can be found elsewhere in Torreón and Gómez Palacio. You can also visit the Museo Francisco Sarabia, which details the history of one of Mexico's aviation pioneers, holder of many speed records from the 1930s. We also have some awesome comida mexicana (mexican food) which was recommended to me - Tortillones! A totally bonkers gordita type dish well-known in the area!

Next up, we're back in Iztapalapa for the final Mexico Travel video of 2021. This is Comarca Lagunera's AND Northern Mexico's FINAL hurrah!

If you're thinking about moving to Mexico or becoming one of the increasing number of expats in Mexico, your choices aren't limited to popular areas like Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, Cancun or Puerto Vallarta. You might even be looking for off the beaten track Mexico. You might ask the questions, Is Mexico Safe? or, Is Mexico dangerous. Durango is a state that, granted, you'll need to be able to speak Spanish in, but the city and state has so much to offer, just as much as those other places!

Drive with me around San Luis Potosí historic center| History + places to visit| Tour

San Luis Potosi's historic center is a remarkable place to explore. The city's rich history, colonial architecture, and numerous churches make it a captivating destination.
It's intriguing to learn that the city was founded due to the discovery of gold and silver deposits in Cerro de San Pedro. The transformation of Cerro de San Pedro from a mining town to a ghost town and now a tourist spot is quite remarkable.

San Luis Potosí is often regarded as the cradle of the Mexican Revolution, boasts significant historical importance. It served as Mexico's capital twice and holds a strategic location as an intermediate point between major cities and ports. The city has witnessed recent economic growth, driven by the development of numerous industrial parks, including those housing major companies like BMW and General Motors.

The state's expansive territory, resembling a dog's shape, encompasses diverse attractions. In the semi-desertic region, places like Real de Catorce, Cerro de San Pedro, and San Luis Potosí city are worth exploring. The jungle region offers natural wonders such as Sotano de las Golondrinas, waterfalls, and lakes in Rio Verde, Ciudad Valles, El Naranjo, Tamasopo, Xilitla, and the Edward James sculpture garden.

Despite concerns about safety due to reports of cartels in some regions, I felt safe exploring the state and of course I recommend taking common-sense precautions.

The city features the longest pedestrian avenue in Latin America, Calzada de Guadalupe, with attractions like the Caja del Agua and Centro de las Artes, housed in the former State Penitentiary. Tangamanga Park, one of the country's largest parks, offers recreational spaces, theaters, museums, and a large lake.

The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Luis Potosí, considered the state's most important monument, showcases baroque and neoclassical architecture. Plaza del Carmen, the city's largest square, hosts significant landmarks, including Templo del Carmen and museums. Plaza Fundadores, the birthplace of the city, features historic buildings like Compañía Church and the Government Palace, surrounded by shops and restaurants.

I hope you enjoy this driving tour and the information provided.

Discover How Sierra Gorda is Leading the Way in Local Climate Solutions

We are excited to introduce the 6 minute version of the film we made for Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda I.A.P. (GESG), following the trailer that was released earlier this year. The film powerfully highlights the successful conservation and climate solutions they initiated decades ago in response to the rapid environmental deterioration of their home in the Sierra Gorda bioregion in Querétaro, Mexico.

We continue to promote GESG’s work because of their incredible resilience, perseverance, and creativity with nature-based climate solutions. They are always striving to bring progress to the region and serve as a global example of community-led, research-based conservation projects. We all think the world could use some inspiration and hope in the fight against climate change. Because there is no Planet B.

A story of resilience, innovation, and the extraordinary power of local action. Local stewards are the custodians and agents of change and a driving force for a nature-positive future.
